2nd Generation Dodge 24 Valve Powertrain

This is a discussion forum of the 1998.5 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

  1. My 2002 24 valve with 180 k miles through these two codes at me the other night as it shut down rolling through an intersection PCU P1693 & ECU P0230. I replaced my lift pump and fuel filter with (OEM parts) after Priming a number of times I got no result. From the sending unit to the injector pump there's what looks like a pressure sensor or regulator with two pig tail wires connected to it running to the lift pump so I grabbed/jiggled/fannessed the two wires and it started and ran so I pulled that part an nobody could idenify it or help me . I dont hear my injection pump running at the key on ignition off position but once I bump the key it pumps and it builds about…

I was driving my truck this morning and all the gauges stopped working and warning lights came on and no bus displayed in the odometer. I hooked up my code reader and it says P1698 no bus message from transmission control module. my code reader will not erase the codes. Has anyone had experience with this. Also wondering if it is okay to drive in this condition. I checked the connections going to the pcm and everything looks fine.

99` auto 4x4 , 217 k on my stock one , keep occurring to me to replace before it goes out . Should have already it seems like . Just ordered a bearing and brush kit from Geno`s , to keep this one as a spare . But would like to get a higher amp than the 135 amp or whatever it is , something like 200 or 250 maybe . I have dually flatbed on it and it has a lot of lights and I haul a truck camper tow trailers , more lights and charge camper batterys on the move , also a large 5th wheel same thing I solved my lock unlock tork converter prob years ago with a ATS rewire , don't want it back if the higher amp ones will cause it Have seen geeenies or such for 400.00 , …

My boost elbow threads are loose enough it's tightening up while I drive.... I went to do some testing and saw the drive pressure spike to over 110psi. Needless to say I'd like to make sure it stays in place! Ideas? I've got a couple of my own but I'd like to hear you guys' first.

  5. I have been considering installing a blocking diode for Alternative energy production to prevent AC Noise from screwing things up. 1600V*100A=160kW which is far more than our trucks output. This means that I could install it between the alternator and the power block to protect all electrical components easily and cost effectively. Installing a diode eliminates the possibility of AC current because it only allows current to flow one way. I would install it between the power block and the alternator then heat shrink to prevent electrical hazards. Another option I have thought of is creating a diode bridge, however, it is difficult to find diodes with the capabili…

Hello folks. My typical 2nd gen doge tranny is nearing it's end. I'm thinking about doing an Auto to Manual swap to hopefully save on money. (Built tranny's are quite expensive) Currently, the truck sits around 500 horsepower, but will probably go up as I add a twin turbo kit and injectors in the future. Can someone share a parts list of the things I would need for the conversion from auto to manual, including the cost of the parts (Except transmission)? Also, would the ECM need to be swapped or reprogrammed? I need to know everything that has to be done for the swap before I decide to begin the project. If any of you believe I should stick to the Auto, what co…

Long story short I was checking on my dad's cattle out in the field and got some really bad wheel hop and the exhaust came apart. Not a big deal I thought but after looking it over the Po who put the 4in exhaust on didn't get one of the pipes together and put the clamp on it egged out the one side and I can't get it back together. my question is can I cut about 1 inch off and put it back together or is this pipe flared on the bell side.

  9. Hi everybody, I'm a new member here, but have been lurking for some time learning as much as I can. My first truck was a lifted 01 f350 with the 7.3 psd. It had an exhaust leak and possibly bad injectors, and was lifted way high with 38's. Not my style truck, and was more than I felt comfortable tackling myself (I was 20). I found an immaculate 02 cummins with 115k miles, totally unmolested with a paint matched canopy and bed rug. I was in love from the first time I saw it on craigslist. Went and bought it the next day with a small loan. Fast forward about 2 years today, still have it and love it. It now has 140k on the clock and I have done oil changes and fuel fil…

  10. I am wanting to do a 24 valve cummins swap into a truck and i was wanting to know if a factory wiring harness could be modified to work without the original truck. I have been told that the 98.5'-00' trucks and the 01'- 02' have slightly different wiring. My question is has anyone done a stand alone wiring harness or does anyone have a diagram of a factory harness that has been turned into a stand alone harness?

  11. I have been curious about breaking one open and poking around a little so I wanted to see if anyone has a good paper weight they would be willing to give up if I pay for shipping. Mine is going and waiting for a refund on one I returned.

Hello, first post on here hoping I can figure out my issues with my 98 24v cummins, occasionally my truck upon start up with stick in either 2 or 3rd gear not sure which one upon putting it in drive, truck will not upshift or downshift until I put it in park turn it off then restart the truck then it will be fine start first gear shift through all the gears and go into overdrive, I pulled 2 codes scanning it with my tuner, P0753, P0748 AND P0743 this problem comes and goes but it always resolved with turning the truck off and restarting making me lean towards and electrical program rather than hardware issue, if anyone can help fix this greatly appreciated!!

Code p1694 won't go away after I got a new torque converter put in. Lack of power still and have checked all the connection on PCM/ECM grounds ext. could this be a issue between the governor solenoid and the PCM? Running out of ideas.

  16. Starter Description The starter motors used for the 5.9L diesel engine and the 8.0L gasoline engine available in this model are not interchangeable with each other, or with the starter motors used for the other available engines. The starter motor for the 5.9L diesel engine is mounted with three screws to the flywheel housing on the left side of the engine. Each of these starter motors incorporates several of the same features to create a reliable, efficient, compact, lightweight and powerful unit. The electric motors of all of these starters have four brushes contacting the motor commutator, and feature four electromagnetic field coils wound around four pole shoe…

  18. Engine Oil Pressure Sensor Signs / Symtoms Just noticed today that the oil pressure is way high while driving and not really moving even upon reaching operating coolant temperature. Driving oil pressure at low throttle is 60-70 PSI at full temperature and idling is right around 60 PSI. Here's the oil pressure gauge, full operating temperature while idling... Even before starting, the oil pressure gauge shows 40 PSI, then after start up right to the 60-70 mark and doesn't move much. I'm hoping this is just the sending unit and not a bearing or electrical problem. Just got some codes on the dash... p0523 p0522 Replacing The Oil Pressure Sensor …

  19. MAP (Manifold Atmosphere Pressure) Sensor The MAP sensor is installed into the rear of the intake manifold. The MAP sensor reacts to air pressure changes in the intake manifold. It provides an input voltage to the Engine Control Module (ECM). As pressure changes, MAP sensor voltage will change. The change in MAP sensor voltage results in a different input voltage to the ECM. The ECM uses this input, along with inputs from other sensors to provide fuel timing, fuel control and engine protection. Engine protection is used to derate (drop power off) the engine if turbocharger pressure becomes to high. Mopar's Notes: This cleaning procedure will not correct any error…

  20. Swapping between 98.5-00 & 01-02 Dodge Cummins ISB 24v VP44 Engines Many people need to change their engine out due to “53” blocks, catastrophic failures or just plain wear & tear. Most do not know about the differences between the two “Sub generations” as I will call them. I will try to explain it all in this article. I will also give known ways to accomplish the swap & why. I will also give an alternative way that I presume will work, but cannot guarantee.Firstly, for some basics. If at all possible, get a replacement engine of the same sub generation if at all possible to make your life easier. Second, if you must use an engine from a different sub g…
