I have an 04.5 ram with this exh. in place....CAT back [for now at least] all 4'' piping w/ 24'' flo-pro strait through muffler & pipe exits at back, right side.   At 1800 to 2300 rpms, at med+ throttle i have drone! At idle, the exh. has a full, throaty sound, plenty noise for me. expecily when backed up to a building where sound bounces off.

The under hood noise is much better then 2nd gen, but exh. [while diff.] is still THERE if wanted to be!  :)

Tell me what works for you!   i have thought about adding the 2nd muffler or adding a 'twister' .

I dont know how much the CAT helps [if at all]  the CAT could be replaced w/ a twister.......

I'M ALL EYES!!!!!   YOU, HAVE A GREAT DAY!  :thumb1:

I bogyht a turbo back 4" SS "kit" off ebay quite a few years ago...  after my stock system rusted out.  I have the 4" glass pack "muffler" that you can stick your arm through.  It wasn't too loud around town but towing on the highway the drone was a headache inducing.  (Wife wore ear plugs)

I bought a SS 4" x 36 FTE twister & never looked back.  For best effect, it's recommended to mount as far forward as possible.  My shop couldn't get it over the cross member so it's as close behind as possible.

I'm surprised the cat isn't quieting it some...  if it is indeed a cat.  It might be just a resonator.

If I had it to do again...  I'd install the FTE resonator in the first place.  I might omitt the straight through "muffler".  I wonder if there is a low back pressure SS muffler that would work?

I have the factory 4 inch exhaust with a muff delete pipe and a 30" resonator from FTE diesel in place where the cat was and absolutely love it now, before the cat was replaced with the resonator I didn't even want to drive it anymore as the drone was so bad.

no muffler?! no wonder your ears needed help!   :)  is this some quieter then a strait pipe?

Resonator, is this a twister? [auger flighting wrapped around small pipe?]

it sure looked like a cat, wire mesh inside.    my muf. is a strait though w/ packing inside the 'barrel',low back psi, but, a bit loud!

It wasn't the exhaust noise that hurt my ears it was the in cab drone that pierced my ears. Yes the resonator looks like auger flighting. The cat actually acts as a sort of muffler too but going with the long resonator mounted as far forward as possible all by itself was 2 fold, quieted down the exhaust sound about half of what cat and straight pipe was and killed the in cab drone completely, I actually like driving it again.

THANKS! just teasing you about yer ears....where did you get your res.?

Oh wow! two people have sumpton to say & thats it?!     dos everybody else have stock exh.??

Drone is not good for you & your trucks reputation, folks!  :)

I would like to hear more!

I am thinking of removing the CAT & replacing w/ a twister/res.   will this be quieter then i have now? [cat. + 24'' strait through muffler]

noise now is 'enough', drone is what i am tired of !

THANKS FOLKS! as always, have a great day!  :thumb1:

I have a cat back MBRP system with the straight thru muffler.  I don't have a drone at all.

I ran straight 3" pipe for years and always got comments on how quiet the cab was. Now I'm running a straight through 3" NAPA tractor muffler and its even quieter. Now that I got my silencer ring back into the turbo the only noise now is the Cummins Rattle. Back when I first got the truck I wasn't bother by a bit of towing noise for 10-30 miles. Now with the RV and hauling hundreds of miles that gets old really quick. Turbo noise and exhaust noise is getting just a bit too much.

Good, the best of both! no drone & cummins tone!

Just to make sure i follow you, the resonator was quietor then the CAT? [all else the same]

THANKS!!

Interesting!  i took a highway run today & 2000+ - rpms  [expec. w/moderate to heavy thottle] the drone gets on my nerves! very there!

my flo-pro is prob. a very simular set up to what you have, cat back 4'' straight through muf. ..................this system was off a 2nd gen 24v that i made to fit this truck .

the 24v didnt drone, but was just loud! some of that was under hood noise...............    sometimes i miss that ''tractor'' diesel sound!...... :)

Did you leave the CAT on for CARB reasons? [i dont know where you live]

I just might take mine off & replace w/ a resonator,,,,,,,,17'' OR 30'' ??? SO MANY CHOICES! life would be easyer  if i wasnt such a ''i wonder if i.......................   :duh:

thanks !! :thumb1:

The 30" resonator only in the system is quieter than anything else I have run but louder end pipe sound than stock, still has a nice cummins tone there and there alone.

With the 30" resonator mounted as far forward as possible and that alone in the system my previous comment describes, with the 17" resonator the drone is dead but the full blown exhaust noise is still there from those who run them say.

thank-you! i got it!  i do have a 24'' 'through' muffler, so a 17'' might be close to what you have ........

on my 98.5 i had a 4'' turbo back w/ the same 'through' muff. that i have now, on that rig the noise was VERY FULL! loud! no drone. your 3'' prob. keeps it a bit quieter.............

From my experiences a size of pipe goes up the drone changes when its going to occur in RPM's. Even with 4" exhaust on 24V it seem more common for drone issue than the 3" did. I know 3" is not a option for you but just looking at noise issues. Now there is a few that changed drone by band clamping T post to the pipe. Another way is where in the pipe the muffler is at closer to the or rear will change this as well. But again kits don't give you much choice for placement.

Check your exhaust hangars as bad/missing ones are the main culprit for drone on a 4" exhaust.

Anybody have experance with CAT on, VS, CAT off , all else the same?

THANK-YOU!!

YUP, I'M REPLYING TO MY OWN POST... :cookoo:  :duh:         ..... what i meant was NOISE.    :thumb1:

i read an article where someone clamped/welded an angle iron on the long section of exh. piping...............................

...........seemed a bit to much 'FARMERized' to me!           :)            maybe that would work!             & maybe i'm just to picky!
