I have an 04.5 ram with this exh. in place....CAT back [for now at least] all 4'' piping w/ 24'' flo-pro strait through muffler & pipe exits at back, right side.   At 1800 to 2300 rpms, at med+ throttle i have drone! At idle, the exh. has a full, throaty sound, plenty noise for me. expecily when backed up to a building where sound bounces off.

The under hood noise is much better then 2nd gen, but exh. [while diff.] is still THERE if wanted to be!  :)

Tell me what works for you!   i have thought about adding the 2nd muffler or adding a 'twister' .

I dont know how much the CAT helps [if at all]  the CAT could be replaced w/ a twister.......

I'M ALL EYES!!!!!   YOU, HAVE A GREAT DAY!  :thumb1:

YUP, I'M REPLYING TO MY OWN POST... :cookoo:  :duh:         ..... what i meant was NOISE.    :thumb1:

My dad's truck, 06, is OEM exhaust without the cat. He has a very healthy exhaust note with no drone.. towing or empty.

great! thanks fellows!  i'm impressed! 2nd page already........  :)

AH64ID,... I looked @ your sig. & and you list a resonator.... is that one part of the megacab tailpipe that is listed or one ,say, like a FTE?   if its a oem,..whats 'inside of those?'

you list a 40'' muff., is that combination close to stock in sound level?  i'm sure its sounds diff.   :thumb1:

[i TOLD YOU I WISH I WAS'NT SUCH A QUESTION BOX!]   :duh:  i think life would be easyer & i'd be more productive!!  :burnout:

Mine is the OEM one in the megacab tailpipe.

It's a deeper tone than OEM and a little louder but still pretty quiet. My dad's 06 with the OEM muffler and no cat is louder at some rpm/loads and quieter at others.

THANKS 'M'-MAM! I VALUE YOUR ADVICE!    :thumb1:

I have a 17'' res. coming from FTE , so i'll try this & let you'all know!!    :woot:   :burnout:      [my kittie will be on the loose :stirthepot:

  can you 'get' rubber like he can?  3 gears? =   :burnout:

How else are you going to learn if you don't ask plenty of questions?

Like my knowledge on 2nd Gen 24V is very strong but put me in the CR engine I'm all thumbs. Why you see me asking AH64ID and other about CR stuff how else will I learn being I don't own a CR truck.

There is no "performance" gain by getting rid of the kitty.  It does help make the truck quieter though.  When my MBRP muffler goes South, I'm just gonna put in a straight pipe.

I think I know what y'all mean by a "drone", but actually I've never heard it.  Or if I have, it doesn't bother me.  Anyone got a recording???

(Chuckling)

Dorkweed if you want to hear drone let me take you down to Fire Station #3 and pull Engine 3 out and go down to the highway and turn around come back. The drone is so bad in that International truck (Detroit Engine) that it like a super deep bass noise ringing through the cab and you can't hear anything on the radio or the person next to you... The drone drowns them completely out.

On our trucks its not as bad but it can be very noticeable if your towing heavy trailers and climbing steep grade at lower speeds.

Yes!, i 2nd this, let somebody with more tech them me post a rec.

i would describe drone as a remote controled aircraft that,....WHO! HOLD UP! wrong brain cell in gear...[at least i have 2!] :thumb1:     a vibrating sound, not exh. tone but a vib. that ''adds'' to the eng./exh. sound at certain rpms/eng. loads.....for me it comes on at 1800+ till about 2200 rpms, louder at heavy thottle.           then, then this vib. crawls into yer head and thrashes your remaining brain cell till you just can't take it anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :ahhh:    and so you buy a fte res. and all is well! [i hope], mine isnt on yet........

The performance gain might only be SOP, but as you discovered when you adjusted your trucks valve lash, ITS REAL!! OH YEAH!  :woot:   :burnout:

So am I to understand that locating the resonator as close to the front as possible will reduce cab drone?

Is there a big longevity issue with stainless vs aluminum?

So am I to understand that locating the resonator as close to the front as possible will reduce cab drone?

Yes

Is there a big longevity issue with stainless vs aluminum?

Depends on the area one lives in, rust belt areas would want SS and like me where winter road salt and deicing chemicals isn't as big an issue "YET" aluminized works for us.

Is there a big difference between a Diamond eye system with muffler included for like $270 than a diamond eye system with FTE resonator instead of the diamond eye muffler?

i got my FTE!!

I am looking at ordering mine either today or tomorrow.  Did it come with the clamps? What length did you get?

no, i ordered the clamps extra  [i love these clamps!]  part# wfc-4      the GOOD stainless!

18'' over all length [ they call it 17.5''] mine is part #rm4417ss       some kind of stainless steel, prob. 409.

i do the magnet test on s.s.   304grade= no magnet pull;   409grade= about 1/2 the pull of reg. steel

i wish they would have cleaned the plazma cut on the flighting, so i will do my best if i can reach it with the die grinder............

i hope to get it on this weekend!  :thumb1:     let us know how you like yours!!

the clamps on the resonator? those i ordered from FTE   [ part #=wfc-4 ]   for 4'' pipe

Some exh. shops have them as well, i'd go with stainless steel.

really nice clamps, they dont crimp pipe, easy on, easy off!!   :thumb1:

i'll try to answer this............. the muff. on that system is prob. a flow through type, [you can stick your arm through] so depends on length of the res.    a 30'' res. is prob. as quiet as a 24'' muff. & a 17''+- res. is prob. louder..... the res. is used to knock out drone.

i had a 98.5 ram & i ran a 4'' turbo back flo-pro exh. [prob. much like diamond eye] with a 24'' muff. only. FULL cummins sound & could plainly hear the turbo. [a bit loud for me,no sneaking out for some snacks! family knew when i left!]

i am now using that exh. on my 04.5 as a cat. back      a lot quieter...... i will be replacing the cat with the 17'' res. soon to get rid of drone, we will see how sound level changes!

  • Author

WELL, i got done today what i planned!!!!!!! WOW!!  :hyper:  I took my CAT off & slipped a 4'' pipe on to connect with the muff. & took my CUMMINS for a drive,...OH YEAH!! THIS RAM SOUNDS LIKE A 2ND GEN!! :woot:  :burnout: some differant, but that 'full' diesel beller! drone about the same.......turbo is quieter then the hx35.        I also started the eng. with just the down pipe, NO GO! way to raw!.....apparently, the CR vs mech. injected noise diff. is mostly under hood.......Then i added the 18'' fte resonator & another run was in order......... drone is 80%[??] gone, sound level is a little lower.

i kinda wish i had the 30'' res. ,....i didnt expect the CAT to have that much muffling.....I will run this for now, maybe towing will change my mind.

So, when i pass you, let me know how it sounds!!!! :burnout:  THANK-YOU!
