EASY there Mike  some of us engineers have actually worked on things!

After working with my Fire Chief on a Ford 6.0L Diesel I need this jacket...

Dodge Cummins isn't so bad... But Ford... OMG! Like my Fire Chief and I will agree you need to take all the engineers out back and beat them with a ugly stick. Then tell them all to go back and fix that turd call a 6.0L Ford Powerstroke. Who in their right mind builds a truck that requires the body to be lifted off.

The 6.0 was a real winner of a motor.... Yes, those engineers need to be beaten with a big stick!!

I built a bank in Savannah Ga 25+ years ago. It sat on 65 pilings and had a 8" structural slab tied into all the pile caps and was quite complicated. I called the engineer for clarification on some items. When I explained my self he just laughed and replied "I draw them you have to build them". And with that he hung up the phone, Wish he would have been local. What I had to say to him needed to be face to face.

Try dealing with the Swedish/Ford/Chines Volvo car engineers.  The car line use to be fun and E-Z to work on.  Now its a $70k rolling peace of processed food waste.      

I dislike a lot of engineers that design "engineer" type things and I am an engineer.  Though, I am more of a Petroleum Engineer than a nitty gritty design engineer.

I once was manager of a big project for my civilian employer.  We designed a new pumping unit that was pretty darn awesome.  It was on a semi trailer sized custom frame, and empty was around 100,000 lb.  Cat Diesel powered, could move over of 200 barrels/min (8400 gal/min) at 60 psi of water, hauled chemicals, had a fully automated and computerized control system that would run itself and meter chemicals using gear pumps and Micro Motion flowmeters... blah blah blah.  It was awesome in short for everybody involved.  

I designed the thing like an oil field hand with an OCD fetish and deep pockets would.  I ended up designing a great unit.  It was easy to maintain, easy to use, safe, and it flat out pumped like no other.  However, it was significantly overbudget.  It is very hard to design anything (especially as a team) that has low cost, light weight, high performance and is easy to maintain.
