Today I was checking the availability of camp sites at Catfish Junction RV Park on their WEB site for the weekend of 8-18-2017 thru 8-22-2017 and found nothing was available.  I'm thinking 'is everyone making reservation this far out'?  Well no, I called their office and spoke with an extremely pleasant and helpful woman.  She said   that they have been having problems with that part of their web site and people should call in so they can get up to the minute info.  She took my name and already had my phone number, so with no money down I have my site reserved.   She said to "just call and cancel if you can't make it".

I am pretty picky about my camping.  I require 3 things..... non negotiable,

1. Beer

2. A place to Fish AKA water.

3. Shade

1. Beer that's easy... Weiser, ID is a quick jump for beer.

2. Fishing. That's easy your got the Snake River to catch catfish.

3. Shade... That is a problem there is very little shade. Then I highly suggest you get your placement at Catfish junction.

How are the bugs there?

They're great and taste just like chicken.

This is from an online review of Catfish Junction RV park.

June 2014:   "And the mayflies were horrible. We were unable to spend anytime outside due to the bugs. And we couldn't leave any windows open as they get in thru the screens. 2 days later we are still swatting them in our mh (sic mouth)"

Maybe by the end of August the bug problem is not as bad.

Michael Nelson, you know the area better, is there some other place we might think about? Maybe has lots of trees, no bugs at least some wind to blow them away off a lake in the evening? I'm thinking more pristine national forest for boon docking. get everyone more happy about surroundings

agree'd if I am driving 1000 miles I dont mind a few more to get to a better site.  I like the catfish place, but I dunno whats in the area.

We would have to rethink location in terms of path of full eclipse. Where ever it crosses a national forest,

maybe Mike can chime in with an idea on a lake perhaps...... an open area to view the eclipse.

The eclipse is a short term thing. We could do a day trip to get into position and camp close by in a good boondock spot. Mayflies probably not so bad later in the year.

I agree.  The eclipse starts around 9:05 PDT there and The full eclipse lasts  about 2' 10".  Fining a place with some shade would be nice for camping.  Any time you're near a body of water you're going to have bugs but near the end of summer the problem should be diminished.

Hmmmm...

Being the forest line starts at about Council, ID... There is one small campground "Mann Creek" north of Weiser Idaho small problem is that place has a bad tick problem. Does have shade.

Do you have any boondock areas or are we trying to accommodate those who want full hook up?

  • Owner

Seem like most are looking for shade. Snake river is good for fishing catfish but its slow moving water for the most part so yes there is insects and such as expected. Boon docking might have its own issues for areas large enough for number of people. RV parks like catfish I'm pretty sure we could cram everyone in there. Just folks like @Me78569 doesn't have A/C so he would need shade. I know there is like maybe 6 slots with full shade there at Catfish. I've got central air in my RV so I could easily just park in the open slot and fire up the A/C and stay fair cool for the day.

I don't need full shade, just enough to take a nap under :)

Heck... I'll roll out the awing and your more than welcome to nap there or you can find a grass patch up near the small shade patch there. This Google photo is kind of poor and old. The first few slots are tucking in the trees with good shade. There is much more grass now than back when this photo was taken.

Yeah, we have a plan and should probably stick to it. I have no AC but the awning will provide daytime shade. It'll be good. Maybe it will be unseasonably cool for us?
