Hi I recently purchased a 2001 3500 - 4x4 - 6 speed manual - quad cab. 

 

It has just under 98k miles on it.

 

It has an edge tuner, banks 4" exhaust, Banks exhaust brake, pyrometer gauge and turbo boost gauge.

 

It had a quite a bit of differed maintenance and a few needed repairs so I'm getting that all caught up first.

 

The check engine light came on 2 weeks ago and I pulled P1693 + P1690.  The truck was running but seemed a but sluggish at the time.  I changed the fuel filter, which was really grungy.  I cleared the codes and measured the fuel pressure which came in at just under 15 psi.  I also changed the air filter.  I drove it around for a bit and it seemed fine.

 

This week I had the oil changed, the cooling system flushed and the brake fluid changed.  All other fluids were already changed.

 

I ran some errands today and the check engine light came on again.  This time I got a P1693 code but could not pull any other codes with my ODBII reader.  I tried a reader at my local auto parts shop, nothing came up with that reader either.

 

The truck seems to be running fine, but I haven't had it that long so I'm not 100% sure what normal is yet.

 

Any suggestions would be awesome!

I would cleat it and see what happens.

I can't get the code to come up with my ODBII reader.  I also tried my local auto parts ODBII reader and no codes.  I have a check engine light and the code comes up with the turn the key 3 times trick only.  Very odd.  Can't clear the codes with my ODBII reader becuase it can't get the codes to come up.

 

I noticed tonight that the terminal connectors to the battery are in nice mess.  I'm going to install the military grade terminals this week.  I suspect that might have something to do with it.

Ahhh... So your going to need to do some wire checking. I'm going to say the CCD bus is goofy. I'm trying to post on my phone. Over in the articles look up CCD Network and check the wiring diagram.

I found this it's for 1999 so I'm guessing 1998.5 to 2002.5 are all the same yes?

 

Has the truck been at or near the ocean most of its life?

 

If you still have the in tank screens those could be clogged and it's fighting a fuel delivery problem starving the injection pump. That hurts the pump too.

 

If you have to drive it at all please put in 1 quart of two stroke oil in the tank for lubricity bringing the fuel scoring value down. Should be done with each tank of fuel.

 

Both my second gens have no screens, no factory banjo bolt fuel lines and no factory lift pump. All can help starve the VP44 and cause wear to the timing piston. My fuel lines are half inch.

Good idea!!!

 

Based on the car fax, where it was purchased and serviced, I believe the car was inland/east of San Diego for all of its life except the last year, it was in Arizona.

 

Now it's back in Southern California where it belongs LOL

 

The up side is cars just don't rust here.  I have an '02 Sequoia I purchased new and not one bit of rust or corrosion on it.

Yes that's good but I may be a bit off topic from Mopar Mikes angle by pointing out fuel delivery problem. However, it does need addressing as does all second gens.

Yes indeed.  That's a great topic! I have a fuel pressure gauge kit on its way to go with the pyrometer and boost gauge.  Based on my research, that's where it starts.

 

I'm on the fence about which lift pump to put in.  I'm not going to be hot rodding this truck.  I have another vehicle for going fast.   I'm basically going for stock with the minimal mods it already has.  I'm working my way towards reliability and fuel economy and getting the truck to a place where it will last for decades and I can tow my other car to the track, or whatever else I want to without worrying about the truck breaking down in the middle of nowhere.

My answer based on this problem. Being we have CEL but just a 1693 code by the key trick. We need the new codes as well. Guessing at fuel issues might get very expensive quickly.

Other than a proper on board fuel pressure gauge, the Lift Pump and the VP44 is there anything else that needs to happen with brining the fuel system up to reliable?

 

As well which lift pump and VP44 would you recommend?

 

I will go broke if I have fuel system parts done at a shop here.  They see a female coming and triple their prices.  The dealers here won't work on older vehicles, much less this beasty. I'll do this all myself becuase I can.  So I'm in the mountains (2200ft above sea level) fixing my own stuff, as usual.  It's not exactly the "Malibu" you see on TV up here. LOL

Basically, you got AirDog and FASS fuel systems.  I would suggest the large 2 filter setup. Don't do any direct replacement pumps. As for the VP44 stick with the Stock VP44 you don't need to waste money on any hotrod or performance pumps.

Awesome thanks.  I saw your newer video on the Alternator nose yesterday on Youtube but I wasn't sure what the spec was for acceptable.  Very good to know.  What do you think about the VP44 from Industrial Injection?

I wonder sometimes if folks are confusing the injection pump with the Lift pump. I wouldn't be thinking new injection pump until you know for sure that's whats wrong.

 

I want to mention Eric at Vulcan Performance with recent name change, which I can't remember now, but that will get you there to look at the 1/2'' line kit and a halfway decent lift pump. Both my trucks are on the AD150 and seem okay so far. All from Eric.

Makes sense to have more throughput.

 

2001 Dodge Diesel Cummins, some reengineering is required.  LOL But all things considered a really awesome truck.

I'm remembering your caked up fuel filter and wondering how much restriction you might have inside the tank screens.

 

My screens are all removed and primary filter added before the lift pump also half inch draw straw.

I'll have to look into that as well.  I like the primary filter idea.

Fuel pressure gauge would tell more about that typically the stock system is too restrictive for even a stock truck. This why most of us have upgraded to an AirDog or FASS fuel system that replaces all the plumbing between the tank and the VP44. The only thing I would suggest is that you keep the stock filter and not remove it. The idea of double stacking filters is good also the WIF light will continue to work and fuel heater in the bitterly cold winters. 

 

Back to the topic title of the solo 1693 code... We need to pull codes and see where we are going before we buy a bunch of parts that do nothing for your immediate problem.
