I wondered if they are a gimmick or not ?

Never heard of solder worth a darn that would melt at that low of temp.

What happens if the wire gets hot from amp draw?

Seems a crimp would be better

They have good ratings. I have never used them but rather have a soldering iron and the roll of wire. I would for sure give those a try. I'm sure the solder is decent and the price point is good enough to give them a shot.

for what it's worth Formula 1 uses them.  good enough for them good enough for me.

Wow those are pretty neat. Definitely going to keep these in mind next time I need some more connectors.

I gotta figure out what gauges the wires of the trailer plug are, so I can figure out what step down butt splices sizes I should get. One side will be crimping on two wires so it will need to be larger

I know there are at least two different gauges. The B+ and the Brake are heavier gauge than the others

Same here. Not sure how I have never seen these before.

That's probably what we use (or something similar) at work.  You need good solid water tight connections in the marine industry.  Rarely do we get warranty returns for bad connections. I personally prefer uninsulated so I can crimp, solder and heat shrink myself.  Those are great butt connectors though
