When I first got the truck, there was a lot of black smoke coming out the tail pipe, more or less all of the time.

 

I changed the fuel filter and most of it stopped (I don't think it had ever been changed), but perhaps that is coincidental.

 

Now I get quite a bit of black smoke when I step on it.

 

I also put in a fuel pressure gague and the fuel pressure is running about 12-13 at idol and can drop well below 5 when I put the hammer down.

 

Any thoughts or suggestions would be great!

Fun tool looks like I can customize the crap out of it.  Got it recently and haven't spent much time with it yet.

 

Can you tell me what I should be measuring and if there are any relationships that can help me figure this black smoke issue out?  i.e. Engine load w/MAPs or something like that?

Does that value increase as you get on it?  or does it stay at 54 inhg?

Not sure I just had it at idol to see if I could get a reading and learn a bit more about the tool.

 

I'll go out for a spin later and see what it does.  I stripped the readout so I only see the MAP I can add something back to the display to understand the correlation.  Is there something that would be good to evaluate along side the MAP data?  I can bring that back and when I take it for a spin I can study that more and let you know what I learn.

not at this point,  most of the fueling, black smoke, is based on map. we want to know if your map is stuck reading a high value, if this is the case your gauge will just stay at 54 inhg

Just to add, your fuel pressure is quite low. You will want to address this issue as well. You want to stay above 14 psi at all times. Your VP will love you for it or it will make your wallet a lot lighter.

My fuel pressure is beyond terrible!! I just got a gauge on it.  That's top priority for sure.

 

I put the mods in my profile list but I guess there's somewhere else I need to put that info.  Thanks I'll look into it.

Ok so ran a test today.

 

Reading of 54.6 inHg when cold at idol.

 

When I step on it the dragon blows out black smoke at a reading of about 65 inHg, then the smoke goes away and the reading increases and pegs at 75.0 inHg all the way up to a higher LOAD PCT I think I got it up to 82% or so at one point.

 

At the end of my run, while idling at normal operating temperature the reading came in at 55.2 inHg

 

Let me know if you think I should replace my MAP sensor.  It looks easy enough to do, and yes even fun :-)

 

 

If you are still on stock intercooler boots my guess is boost leak. 

 

This is the tester the shop I go to uses.  You test from charger to right before Intake horn.  You can increase pressure as you go. I had multiple leaks at different pressures. 

 

Testing this way is eye opening and a little spooky to say the least.

Another thing I had noticed before leaks were resolved were an increase in EGT's by 150-200 degrees along with a serious increase in smoke.

I test mine with the intake horn in place. You can find any leaks there also.

the map looks to be working right. 

 

Boost leak is next.  I also leave the intake track together to check for leaks at the horn, or intake gaskets ( very often blow out)

The problem with leaving the horn in place is that the system only charges to xx psi that way. I think 15 pounds. 

 

You can do it that way sure to get obvious leaks squared away. 

 

I had boots fail at 25 psi because when they swelled, they started hissing. There was a failure in the boot itself. 

 

You would be amazed at how much stock boots balloon at 25 psi.

Why can't you put more than 15 psi with it connected? My stock ones saw 33psi regularly especially towing in the hill country and mountains without issue. Never tested them that high. I test mine in the 20 psi or so range.
