First real post here, been lurking in the back ground but now I have a issue you all might be able to help me with. Ok got a 02 gen 2 nv5600, air dog pump. Start it in the morning to warm up (plugged in over night) and blocked wheels cause my driveway is on a incline and my ebreak is not the strongest. Come out to leave and have to put it in gear and shut off truck then remove blocks. Go to start back up and will not start just cranks but does not fire. Now I've been able to get it to start 2 different ways when this happens, either with ether or with my smarty using it to clear the 4 codes it shows. Those codes are as follows.

P0232
P0230
P1475
P1693

Now ive been told i need a new vp, a new pcu or ecu, could be ground issue, could be fuel pump relay issue (already replaced).

Who has had this problem? What was your solution?

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

  • Whats happening then is the AD is running at a full 18 psi (your setting) when the key is ON.  This means the VP is receiving fuel incoming pressure while the engine is cranking, which then increases

  • I should say that I have NOT heard it in a good while. My heating aint what it used to be. You reckon 434k in the 2nd gen might have something to do with it?

  • Fuel pump relay is ONLY for the vp44 in these trucks. It looks like the ecm 5v ref is shorted based on the P1475.

Do you know what the codes are? If not hre is where to find out. https://mopar1973man.com/cummins/articles.html/24-valve-2nd-generation_50/51_engine/obdii-error-codes_94/

Iv heard of people having this issue and it was the vp44. Whats your fuel pressure?

Fuel pressure is around 18 psi

That is better than mine lol! How old is your vp? When you cleared the codes did they come back?

Not sure on age of VP. From what I can tell and have been told it has been replaced in the past. Yes the codes come back immediately..

Obviously you have an issue that's not going away. Its possible your ecm is bad. I would perform all tests mentioned about the codes you have. The tests are listed under the code number in the link I gave you.

Sounds like I have a long day ahead of me tomorrow lol. Thanks for your help.

Not a problem were here too help each other. Hopefully some people that know more will chip in.

I would take a closer look at the PO232 code seems that could likely be your problem. P1475 also points too bad ECM I believe.

Might be electrical connections. The site owner uses the Wait to Start light on the dash as an indicator for the health of the ECM.

Does wait to start lite go on immediately and stay on for a few seconds? If it doesn't that's bad.

Side question.....Is the lift pump running off the batteries thru a protection relay to protect the Ecm ?

Good advice @JAG1

Do check all connections that have anything to do with your isssues. There could always be shorts in the wiring somewhere too.

Yes the wait to start comes on with the key and will shut off if plugged in with in a few seconds if not plugged in and cold will take a bit before it shuts off.

As for the air dog, once key is turned on the pump stays on.

The pump should not run contiuosly at key on. What kind of AD do you have and do you know how it it is wired?

The pump should run for 20 seconds if you just bump the starter but no let the engine start. Thank you Dripley that's another clue for a healthy ECM.

The po may have had ECM problems and wired the pump to a key on hot to get around it.

Could be. I’m gonna guess he has bad ecm.

Thanks for all the advise guys. Any good way to check the ECM?

I think the test that you perform for P0232 will tell you if it’s bad. Someone correct me if I’m wrong

A dealer, maybe, Cummins or send it to rebuilder to test it. Not much you can do but find symptoms or see a p 0606 code. Fuel pump not acting rignt is one. At key on you should get a little blip or prime of the pump, less than a second. Bump the starter and it should run for 20 or so seconds. Engine starting should run about half pressure and engine running the pump should run constantly. Now that is if it is connected to the ECM and it is working as it should. If it is connected to the ECM or wired to a key on hot and running all the time that could be the hard start issue, to much pressure while starting. If it is connected to the ECM and running all the time, there is your first symptom.

Does you WTS light come on at key on or is it delayed? That is another symptom.

WTS light comes on when key is turned, no delay.

That's a good sign. I would do the diagnostics on your codes and see what you find.
