Have trouble getting my old 2001 Cummins work truck to run. Truck  ran great but was leaking fuel from drain plug on side of the fuel filter housing, so i changed it out. Truck was hard to start, then would run, but would die if i put it in gear. Did this acouple of times, then bucked and saw big cloud of grey smoke come out of tail pipe. Now truck is in what seems to be limp mode( iknow these older trucks dont have them) but truck will not go over 2000 rpm. Theres no more smoke at all, just has no power ,Thought maybe i had air in the fuel lines so ive tried first with the lift pump valve , and then cracked the injector lines, still nothing has changed. Totally stumped.

I would be looking a problem either related to the work you just did or triggered by the work you just did.  I say this because you said the truck was running fine before you performed the work. An example could be that maybe the lift pump has not been operational for awhile (and you didn't know that before you opened up the filter housing) and now the gear pump inside the VP44 is trying is trying to draw fuel from the fuel tank instead of being charged with fuel from the lift pump.

I would start with the basics.  Re-inspect your work and confirm that you have lift pump flow.  If you need further help then you will need to let us know if there are fuel modifications on your truck and what those fuel modifications are.

I did get some codes pulled now, and man there was alot.rrrr frustrating!

P1688- Internal fuel injection pump controller malfunction

P0253-Pump valve open circuit

P0252-fuel valve signal missing

P0251-fuel injection pump mechanical malfunction

P1488- Auxiliary 5volt output to low

P0522-oil pressure sensor low

P0237-Manifold pressure sensor voltage low.

Insane im throwing all these codes now from replacing 1 small 5min part on side of fuel filter bowl.  Trucks getting fuel to all the injector lines, i bleed them thinking it was air in the lines. But now with all these codes im hoping i didnt mess up my pump. But trucks nt smoking, starts rite up, just wont get above 20mph and 2000rpm.

Check all of your battery connections - especially on the driver's side.  With that many codes, you may have a loose wire or a ground problem - again, inspect wiring near the area where you were working when you repaired the fuel leak.  Coincidences happen, but are rare.  Many times I have repaired something and then found that I unwittingly created another problem.

Bold is the injection pump. Replacement is required if the codes come back again.

I went over all of the work i had originally did this morning, everything looks good. Thinking i may have fried the pump (with air )Im going to try and clear codes and reset the truck. If that doesnt work looks like ill load her up on my trailer and take her in. Funny i tryed to save $ and do it my self,(simple install i thought) now probly going to cost me, Lol.( live and learn) These trucks are usally so easy to wrk on, ( thats why i bought 2 of them). Crossing fingers.

Thanks for all the responses guys, i appreciate it.

Yeah, its getting good fuel flow threw the injector lines. I blead the pump ,the fuel filter canister, and the fuel injection lines, there was some air in the pump at the vaulve, thought that would have fixed it, but still has no throttle after 2000rmp.

Runs fine, just no power. If i floor it it only goes to 2000rpm then just holds there. It  did have a hiccup,  but now it seem to run smooth, just now power.

Faulty MAP sensor will, greatly reduce power but it should go past 2000 rpm. Just had trouble with mine a bit back with similar results but it would go past 2000 but slowly. Prety much gutless.

Yeah i replaced that a year ago, totally feels the same. Idk, just glad i have a back up truck.lol Tried the trick with unhooking negative terminals and leaving key on over night no change. Im really thinking i got to much air in the pump. If the pump is bad do the trucks always smoke? Mine only blew a big grey cloud 1st day, but now doesbt smoke a bit. Idk im totally baffled.

Thanks again for all the replies  and helo.

Won't do a darn thing. ECM and PCM are flashed with software this will not reset anything software wise or correct any problem. It will not wipe out error codes either still stored in memory forever.

Check for error codes. Smoke is not a real clue. Like mine blows a bit of smoke on start up every morning. Smoke could be injectors just getting sloppy. Error codes will point to the problem.
