so I just purchased a 2000 dodge ram 2500 with the 24v cummins in it. When I start the truck it blows smoke or steam on the windshield and fogs it up. What could be causing it?

It was cause from not flushing the cooling system every 50k to 75k miles. The coolant becomes corrosive and starts breaking down the metals in the cooling system and then produces the scale blooms around the core tubes in the radiator. Heater core is most likely weeping enough to dampen the face while parked and as it warms up steam is released in the cab.

Make sure to pull the entire HVAC case and clean it out it does get rather ugly inside the case.

I have to do mine also it's getting worse each month. When in there with the work, I'm also changing the evaporator core along with the heater treater (still learning about that), the A/C system O rings and the foam gasket to the two piece plenum.

Like the last time mine was pulled out it was full of pine needles and dirt. Mostly the dirt road travel and hauling firewood off the mountains.
