Thanks in advance for any advice! Went to start my truck today and ran for about 10sec and died, can't get it to restart!

Fuel pump seems to be working, have fuel coming from lines at injection pump, inlet and return, no codes I'm aware of, I don't have a reader just with key procedure.

  What's involved with checking injection pump? (Please don't let it be that!!) I'm a diesel noob and fairly new to me truck, please be gentle ?

Thanks for reply, I just cracked the inlet and return lines to check for fuel. Are you suggesting taking injection pump cover off and checking a line going into motor while cranking?

Take the nuts loose where the lines go into the cylinder head, 2 is enough, 1 and 3 are easy to get to. Back the nuts all the way off. Then try cranking. If fuel is getting thru the pump you will have quite a flow from them. They're no covers to remove.

 

Then get a scanner and check for codes. The key trick is not reliable.

Thanks again, am I thinking correctly that this is not a one person job? As in cranking it and then get out of cab and looking for a mess of fuel everywhere?

(Neighbors are going to love me, truck is in street) Or do I need someone cranking and then close them if/when I see fuel coming out? Then at what pressure/volume? This is my problem having no experience at this.

 I've been researching and came across "jumping" the vp44 to see if it will fire, any thoughts on this route? Or checking for voltage? Any relays or sensors to check?

Remember when the fuel lines are purged they create a minimum of 4,500 PSI to fire the injectors. An open line should pulse strongly, not dribble or just drip. I normal crack 1, 3, 4 and the crank till it attempts to start close the lines and crank till it starts. You need charged batteries and good starter RPM's.

You should be able to see some fuel splattering by looking thru the gap between the hood and the cowl. If not crank it for a few seconds and if fuel is present you should see it on the ground. If messiness is an issue 2 people would help greatly.

You need to get the codes. Most auto parts stores will loan a scanner for a deposit. The pump might be toast. You do have fuel in tank, right? More than a quarter tank.

I'm going to go by tonight . I have  sledge hammer.  One good wack will make it good as new.

I told him crack all 5 crank to see if fuels present at the head.

Will my smarty read his codes?

A BFH is handy tool.

 

As far as a Smarty is cocerned I would think it would read unless it is VIN locked for code reading also.

You should have a lot of fuel if you backed 5 of them. Even 2 can be messy.

Got a hold of a code reader, that I'm not familiar with, at first it says no dtc's then I go to enhanced mode it shows po230, fuel pump primary circuit, and p1693 transmission.

Sounds like the issues I'm having but not sure if those are stored codes?

Any advice? I saw somewhere it could be a ground? (Po230)

I'm seeing the po230 has something to do with lift pump? I know that pump is working, could it have too much pressure? On a stock Carter?

Maybe I need to get a gauge at Schrader valve and crank over?

The 230 code is for the transfer/lift pump circuit out of range. The 1693 has nothing to do with the trans. It is just one telling there is a code in the other computer, just ignore that one. There is a list of error codes in the articles section under 2nd gen 24v. When my oe Carter paump crapped the bed the truck would not run. The truck just died and would not restart. Might be the issue.

Pressure check could not hurt. I doubt seriously that pump is putting out to much pressure but maybe minimal pressure. Like l said mine would not restart when that pump failed. The VP went for 75k more.

Thanks,Evan and I concluded it's time for a lift pump, could only get it to pump up pressure once or twice, per gauge on Schrader valve at IP. I guess it could be something else but that Carter has to go regardless. The pump is running, just doesn't push any pressure.
