Codes the old fashion way

Hi, I'm not sure if I could do this Mopar1973ManI didn't have a code reader and wasn't successful in fining a way to display my codes if any. So I came across this info.Check for codes. By Cycle the key on and off 3 times with out starting, stop in the run position on the 3rd time. Codes will be displayed in the Odometer.delete it if the half too Mopar1973ManSorry

In pre 01 or 01.5 it lnly reads one computer. It will read both in my 02, but does not always read them all. It is a decent starting place however. A scanner is the best way to get them all.

1998.5 to 1999 - Key trick doesn't work.2000 - May or may not work properly I've seen some report normally PCM and ECM and some only PCM.2001 - Only PCM will report.2002 - Both PCM and ECM computers will report.Still best to use a OBDII scan tool...

    Yes your right on using OBDII, I was just thinking on an alternative. Did it in the past on some cars. (4 letter word). I like checking once and a while on what a Tech. would call soft codes. Preventative maintenance is always a good idea.Probably would be better to get a programmer!

    No using the key trick where you turn the key On - Off - On - Off- On in under 5 seconds then it will diplay error codes in the odometer display.

    This is going to sound dumb. Will error codes display in the odometer if I have no apparent problems? Thanks mopar man. the hunter

    i bought a nice little code reader for 70 bucks at wall mart that i carry with me almost all the time. it will read and give a description on a cd also. saves me from carrying the one from the shop and also help to generate new customer :thumbup2:

    If there is no problems... P-PCU -------- P Done P-ECU -------- P Done That is all you'll see. No codes but just p-done twice. But if there is old code(s) they will be stored for 40 warmup cycles... (Not key cycles!)

    Who makes a good code reader? And what has been your experience with it, if any? Walmart carries which Manuf./Model. Thanks all. Very much appreciated. the hunter

    I still haven't pulled the trigger on a code reader. I see WM & Amazon show Equus 3030 Innova code reader for ~47 bucks. Cheap enough. What's holding me back? Wife has a 2004 Subaru Outback wagon... Daughter has a VW. I see reviews that these vehicles may not work with this scanner. ???

    My Smarty Reads codes, as does my Ultra Gauge and Scan Gauge. Of those 3 only the Smarty will clear them, even though the UG and SG try to. SG told me that Dodge uses a non-standard way to clear codes?? Either way the key trick should work on your 3rd gen, 03 IIRC.

    Odd... Must be a 3rd Gen issue... ScanGauge works on the 24V 2nd Gens no issues here except you got to shut the engine down and turn the key to ON then you can clear codes.
