Sorry for the crappy video but it at least has good sound. If you cant tell I am recording this from the intake tube off of the stock air box. The noise I am refering to is the repetitive thumping noise. At idle I can hear it inside the cab but I dont notice it driving down the road. I just got this truck and I dont know a whole lot about diesels although I know my way around a gasoline engine pretty well. I cant tell you what it is, but mine has done since it was new and still does it. It is more pronounced since I installed the BHAF inplace of the factory air cleaner. I am sure some one here has an explanation for it.

The thump will change with air systems... Like Dripley said it will be more pronounced. If you removed the tube all together from the turbo you won't hear it at all.. :whistle:But you could double check the valve lash to be sure everything is correct.

I take it that thump is not normal. I did not notice any differance after I adjusted my valves. Of course I have heard it for so long I dont pay much attention to it.

Kind of hard to say what is normal and what isn't these days in intake noises. But as long as the valve lash is set right and the MPG's / Performance is good I wouldn't worry about it much. But I've had phone calls from guys that owned a Cumminsd for 300K miles and never lashed the valve and complain about odd manifold noises and poor performance. After doing the lash the noise is reduced and the performance is back.

Is there a write up on the valve adjustment? The Cummins shop wants $250 to do it, sounds like a lot of money for maybe an hours worth of work. I would like to do it myself but not sure how you know were TDC is on our trucks.Don

Doubtful but there is a way to test that too... http://articles.mopar1973man.com/2nd-generation-24v-dodge-cummins/24-air-system/122-turbo-inspection If the turbo bearing are going south you would have oil in the exhaust pipe and/or oil in the intake piping. This would be cause from hot shutdowns. In other words you should take a peek at your pyrometer and get your exhaust temp down to 300*F before shutdown. This prevents turbo shaft from coking up and doing damage to the turbo.

I'm getting ready to rebuild my turbo, I have some shaft play, so I got another used but good one to throw on while I'm rebuilding this one. When I had my intake off testing out the new to me turbo I could still hear this noise. Its coming from the engine somewhere I just cant tell where. I havent had the chance to adjust my valves yet but I will definitely post back when I do and let you guys know my results. I appreciate the help, thanks

sounds just like mine, i adjusted the valves a while back and no change in noise, i honestly think its normal, my friends 02 does the same thing....

Sounds like my (non turbo) isuzu diesel when you pull the air filter. I wouldnt worry about it.

I was listening to my buddies 04 and I didnt hear it on his and thats what got me worried about my truck. Maybe just some of the trucks make that noise, I dont know. I havent found where its coming from yet and I havent had any problems associated with anything that could be causing it......yet

Yeah I adjusted my valves a few days ago, good times It did quite my truck down a lil but this noise is still there. Someday whatever it is will break and Ill replace it and then I will know for sure

I first noticed the noise in mine 9 years ago, so you probably have a long time to wait. I occasionaly hear it on other videos here and elsewhere. I am believing it is not abormal. It would be nice to know what it is though.

ok I can see it now. Yeah - sounds exactly as mine was - thats the only way I kinda thought it was probably that. So Im not a mechanic - and I tried everything to isolate where it was from including a stethoscope and that made no difference - too much noise - just it was MUCH louder from the CAI and kinda sounded like it was comming from the passenger side more (probably due to the cai echo) - I ended up taking it to a diesel mech I trusted and he took 1 listen to it and told me. They had to pull the head and get it decked and new valves. Not fun. I *think* he said the problem is if the valve was damaged enough or got worse it could drop to the piston - or pieces of it. I dont know how true that is - but it kinda makes sense if its cracked or damaged from heat. Anyway - unless you can pull the head yourself - probably have to find a mechanic you trust. You also have a CR so Id hate for you to have someone to pull it unless they also thought the same and were a mechanic you trusted. So start there.
