Ok, so I got rid of my 24V with headaches, and apparently picked up a 12V with someone else's headaches.. So, out of the frying pan, into the fire.I've been working out some kinks on this '97. I test drove it last friday, and from what I recall, it seemed to be fine.. Unless I didn't notice it (my fault for lack of due-diligence.)At any rate, the issue (for this thread) is the transmission.Story goes: 2 owners ago, dude bought a Jasper trans, installed it, killed it, warrantied it, killed that one, warrantied it, killed it, then Jasper said "this is your last one."so he pulled the 5spd from this '97, installed the Jasper auto in it, and stuck the 5 speed into the truck that he was using to kill transmissions. However, he did a ____-poor job, and sold it to last owner, who killed the poorly/improperly incomplete install in short order. So he took it to a diesel trans guy in MD, who rebuilt the Jasper trans using triple disc TC, red clutches, kevlar bands, HD valve body, etc. (parts from HTS Diesel).Installed a PCM (to replace a non-existant one) and rewired everything, so to speak, or so the story goes.Fast forward to me.. ( I don't need any "I told you so" type stuff, because I know. Believe me, I know.. One word: Wife. )I drove it home last friday, and all seemed well, although I did notice it seemed to rev a little higher to get it moving.. Granted, I'm new to autos, as my '01 was a manual, and the '96 before that, was manual, so I'm somewhat rusty on how they perform/react. Thought maybe the TC had a little higher stall.Last night, my 7 y.o. daughter wanted to ride around the block in the new dually.. Wish granted. That's when I noticed that something wasn't quite right... No low/1st gear engagement. Neither with shifter in D, or if I manually drop it to L (1), nothing, nada.. it seems to stay in 2nd gear or so.. I will add that if in D, at a stop, let off the brake and the truck starts to creep forward.. give a little throttle and drop it into 2nd, it feels to almost 'drop' a gear, as the forward progress seems to be a more positive engagement, but still no 1st. Driving 30mph, slow prepare for a stop sign, drop lever to 2, it downshifts.. drop to 1 from like 10mph, no gear change/drop occurs.. it stays in 2nd..TC lockup and such works, and with the 4.10s, 60-65mph yeilds about 1900-2000rpm.The Coolant Temp Sensor circuit is fubar somewhere, as is the tach in the I/C. The tach does read through the scan gauge, however, so the Crank Position Sensor seems to be operational.I was told this trans has a 3/36 warranty, but getting that info is proving to be a tad on the tough side..Trans looks fresh, complete with gray paint, Jasper stickers, etc., so it was apparently rebuilt in the Jasper case.Help. I need to troubleshoot this as inexpensively as I can, for obvious reasons.

Bummer......so it appears as though you may be in the market for another pcm, unless he knows of a way around it?

Oh crap lol.

So, as you can see, my PCM is for an RWD truck, not a 4WD...

Wonderful..

I'll be calling Dean (JR's friend) in a little while..

Are you saying that all the troubles you have been having with the tranny and poor mpg are because your truck has the wrong PCM in it??

So if that is changed to the right one then you have a new truck??

This could be Christmas in March.

That's what I'm hoping to saySent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2

I hear your pain i was there last year it will cost you but a dealer may be able to re-flash the computer as to the shifting mine was a wire for the apps sensor that a local transmission shop I will go over to storage tonight and snap a picture of the wire... It goes straight to the battery.

IMHO that line will not last, my truck left me 200 miles from home the first time the second time I was close to the shop that built the trans, in short I broke three lines in six months costing between towing parts and labor a tick over 3k all covered thank someone for the warranty i payed for cuz it bought me my trans in headaches... BTW i went through steel, copper, then steel again. They put a big pump in with a HD tipple disk TC my suggestion to you which I did and I will post pictures, go and find a hydraulic fitting shop you need your factory fitting so they know what to get you and length (now I feel like a goon for not knowing what they are) they can use what ever you want but you want a soft line capable of 200 psi a company called hyquip did mine it will set you back bout 300 to do every cooler line.

My mistake you dont have an apps sensor if im corect but the first pic is the wire i was talking about. the second is the cooler with the coupler that you broke the two after that is drivers side going forward to the auxilary cooler/ and a partial of the crossover auxilary sorry I couldnt get good pics of the two lines that crossover the transmission or were they go into the tranny the third also shows the clamps we used to group two lines together available at any local hardware that weird white stuff is called snow  had a few to much of that in the past days making taking the pics hard and you can see my high quality undercoating on my oil pan :thumb1:hope this helps you in some way

So, apparently, the PCM is right, per Dean. I may still buy the '96 PCM and harness, as the harness would server me well.

I've got a new list of things to check/do for Dean. Hopefully I can get this done this evening, if weather holds out.

Main thing he wants me to check is Governor pressure. 1psi per 1mph is what I should see, apparently.

Rain moved in last evening, so I've still not checked this pressure... we'll see what this evening brings, but it's not looking good, weather-wise..

x2Rogan - you know the best thing about all this is ?? .........once you get it fixed ....... we are going to have a local MM1973MAN 47RE tranny expert !!seriously ..... sucks to learn it the hard way - but your gonna have some invaluable diagnositics background to help others in an area where most people dont really know - just what we've read on forums .......thats going to help a LOT of people....:thumbup2:

Due to health issues (stroke) this progression stalled for a bit. Hope to be able to get after it soon.. Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2

Wow, I'm sorry to hear that Rick. I hope you get back on track soon, I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

I ordered a complete auto PCM and harness from CompD member yesterday. $117 shipped. Should be here late week, hopefully.

  • Author

LOL yeah. They should be here tomorrow. Weather permitting, I'll swap the PCM and harness in and see if it makes a difference. If it doesn't, then I'm just looking at it as I paid $100 for an unmolested harness to replace my hacked version. ;)

Ok.. revival time. I swapped the entire pcm harness and pcm yesterday. It's like driving a different truck. Let me tell you that a cc dually, pitching sideways is a whole lotta truck to handle! LOL So I got an oe OD button to install. The dash harness has the pigtail for it already, so it's plug and play. Button works the OD fine but the light on the button (od off) never goes out. Only when I turn the headlights on, will the light go out, but doesn't cycle the light as you press the button on/off.. weird. Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2

I'm gonna call it about 90% BUT A HELLUVA site better ! :)Here's what I'm talking about with the OD button's light..

Thats great to hear! :thumbup2: Its gotta be a good feeling to finally have a truck that does what its sposed ta do

X2. Now that the tranny is at least 90% good then what are you going to do in your spare time?

I wonder if the correct year O/D switch is wired differently?

Work on the other 10% :)

I wonder if the correct year O/D switch is wired differently?

I pulled a switch assembly from a JY truck, so the proper switch (dash-mounted) is installed. Now, that isn't to say that something is just wrong with the switch, itself..
