Posted November 3, 201212 yr Owner I'm off and running early this morning looking for a lost hunter in my neighborhood. Tell you more when I get home.
November 3, 201212 yr Author Owner Well I'm home quick... The hunter walk past his trail missed camp and didn't return to camp that night but walked into base camp we had at the bottom of the mountain. So it was a nice ride on the ATV...The hunter had a good sense of humor he standing there next to the Sheriff and said, " Yeap! I'm the one you want to kick the crap out off. Everyone row up and take your shot!" I laughed a bit and told it best that your still sucking air and alive to tell us you OK. That's the good news!
November 4, 201212 yr Author Owner No. I was at the top of the mountain with the ATV when he rolled in the base case and the bottom of the mountain. Well at least he's fine and I got to go out and enjoy the fall ride on the ATV and meet up with SAR friends...
November 4, 201212 yr Staff I'm glad it all turned out well and you had an easy day.Mike when SARS is called into action how do you guys keep from getting lost or forgetting the way and getting turned around? GPS?
November 4, 201212 yr Author Owner I've got maps, GPS, and we are suppose to work as a paired team so typically I got my buddy James that rides with me that does the keeping track of the maps and such I drive.
November 4, 201212 yr i got lose for about 2 hours on Friday. I came out a road i had never been on and ended up about 20 miles of courses. I have lived and hunted my all my life in the Colockum area and i could not have told you where i was. Ended up calling my dad at work when my cell phone finally connected and he found on a map by land marks where i was. Thank god for my dad and he always has a map of the area in is dump truck. I felt like a ___ not knowing but i had never been to that side in my life. Needless to say my 4 hour quick trip turned in to a 9 hour grind on some of the worst roads you can imagine. Good news is that i did see a lot of elk and did get a shot. Which i missed :banghead: . That why you always have a full tank when you leave the house. That is the one think my dad always has drilled into my head.
November 4, 201212 yr To JagI and others who reponded to Mike's S&R activities let me explain a little about what takes place here in the wilderness area. A hunter/hiker gets lost and as night falls the sheriff's office begins to get the calls. There are 62 miles of canyon floor here covered with ranches, homesteads and spit-size communities. The call goes out to the S&R members about 3AM to prepare for a search. In a relay form, each member calls his partner or other member. A designated base camp is already given and to meet there at daybreak. At 3AM Mike has notified me that a search is activated and he begins to go in and out the door checking and re-checking is gear. He puts it all together, may have a stack of toast and oj., and sits down at the computer to kinda unwind. He's calling his partner in the middle of the night and bouncing procedures off of one another. Diesel (our doberman) is excited because he thinks he's going and he's racing right along behind Mike. It is still dark but daybreak is just over the ridge now and Mike goes out the door. Just another S&R!!!!!!!!
November 5, 201212 yr Mom,He wasn't "lost".............he only didn't know where he was!!!! I've gone on a couple hunting trips to Colorado with "guys" like that, and I wouldn't trust them with anything, let alone my life or someone else's!!! In the camps I was in, it wasn't hard to spot them. I often wonder why we take such pains to "save" folks like that??!!! Doesn't matter whether it's out by you and Mike, or in the inner city or even suburbia like where I'm at...............I cannot help but think sometimes that we're not improving the species at all..................based on the daily news and such!!!:soap:Sorry, had to vent...............went pheasant hunting at the state place on a Sunday, and all the weekend warriors were out!!!!
