It has been a while since I have drained my filters, so today I did. Almost a year later and no water. I always buy fuel at truckstops or Wally World here in town. Is it normal to not have any water?2003 Ram Cummins NV5600 with gauges and a Smarty! Not much more.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I've made it a habit to stop at truck stops or stations that turns fuel over at a high rate. On cross country runs, Pilot / Flying J or Loves mostly. But not all keep their tanks serviced as they should. Have only found water in the separator (very small amount) twice in the last 5 to 6 years.

(think about it, it's about $4.00 a gallon at the pump for water)

In the beginning I was buying fuel at the local Mom and Pop places which was cheaper fuel. I only seen the WIF light once in the life of my truck ever since then I switched to Chevron, Maverik, Cenex fuels and never had any other problems. In 5 years of my AirDog I never drained the water separator and only found about 1 ounce of water. Never seen any water in the stock filter can since...

I haven't seen any water since about 15-18K miles (currently at 83K). I bought the truck with 10K on it, in 3 years!, so there was some water in it at first. Not much and I am certain it was from condensation and sitting. I run 2 f/w sep's that exceed OEM specs and never get a drop, IMHO modern fuel is VERY dry!

I drain mine at least once every 5K miles. It may be more often based on circumstance, but it's a 5K mile interval for me.

but thats what the WIF idiot light is for.

I have heard of many rigs with water damaged fuel systems and never a WIF light. You also have to look at the efficiency of your filters, not all filters are better than stock and standard AirDog and FASS filters are not, but are getting better.

How does the WIF sensor work? Does is it just a ground that closes those 2 contacts when the water engulfs it and completes the circuit, or does it have a certain resistance minimum in which it turns the light on?

Depends completely on the part numbers, you could have 20 f/w seps but if they aren't rated correctly you aren't getting the filtration needed.

I think both, depending on the model year.

Happen to communicate with someone I use to work with and was told the policy hasn't changed. The diesel is sent to a storage tank where it sets for a predetermined time. Our Storage tanks maximum storage of 180,000 bbls (and at 42 gallons per barrel, that maximum of 7,560,000 gallons). Up to 100,000 bbls they let it set still for 24 hours and sample for specs and water dilution. If it passes test, they ship. For water count, if it doesn't pass, it sets for 12 hours more and test again. Continued until pass or reprocessed. (there are federal / state standards to be met)

After that, it's either piped or trucked.

* If piped, it is sent to a line going outside of the facility, general to the 'Spot Market' or the companies actual satellite shipping facilities. From there it can be shipped anywhere in the country or trucked from there. Depends of the area and needs. They are to check their vessels / delivery trucks for water prior to shipment, like the refineries.

* When trucked from our facility, the trucks are to clean their tanks prior to fill and this is to remove prior products and clean for water. The check is done by 'the driver' prior to fill. They deliver to the station. If there is water in the truck load, should be a very low count. Now if there is, this will collect in the stations tank.

At the local station, the draw point is determined by design of the tank for the pump pickup point. This is never at the bottom of the tank. This allows the water to settle to the bottom for later removal. 'IF' the station does what they should do and have their tanks serviced when needed, the water will not get to your tank. If the draw point is not right … or they didn't service when needed, you can get water.

The stations is actually the final point for water extraction prior to you purchase.

Depends on how good they are to their customers would determine how much water your fuel / water separator sees.

It's usually better to service their equipment properly instead of a bunch of pi**ed off truckers yelling and suing them.

I know your good, just pointing it out in general.Lots of people think that because it says Fleetguard on the side it's the best possible filter, when Fleetguard only makes each filter to the specs needed.

Knock on Wood, I've never had the idiot light come on!!!!! I change out my FF's yearly......or about every 20,000 miles. It's worked for me with 2 Dodge Cummins now!!!IMHO, if you run enough "fuel" through your truck, this shouldn't be a problem. The problem arises if you let your truck for long periods of time with large temperature swings!!! I use about a tank of fuel every 10 days on average..............not a concern for me unless I get a bad tank of fuel. But I drive my truck enough to know that!!!!:smart: I hope!!!:pray::pray:

Hmmm, question number 2. For those with elements (the little air filter looking jobbers), are they always black when you take them out? Mine go in white and come out black. W&F talked about the difference between the blackness as one is bacteria and one is just normal, I was wondering if you guys all have black filters as well.
