Hello all, I have a Isspro oil pressure gauge(R17211) due to arrive hopefully Monday and wanted to know if I could mount it on the drivers side in what I believe is an oil gallery.  I have been looking at threads on the forums and most I find most are about the CR's.  Looking to see if this is what I think it is and if it is has anyone used this as a location for the sender.  Otherwise I will use the port on the oil cooler/filter housing.

Mount it in the spare spot on top of the oil filter housing.

I'm pretty sure that is a oil gallery. The stock sender is mounted on that side too. But I think you going to run into issue with the rust threads.

That's my original plan, but I thought if I could mount it somewhere else I would.

Yes it does, I was curious to see how the two (3 if you count the dash)compare.  Plus I am bored, I am not starting my new job until the 5th and ran out things to do.  I think I can drag this install out for an afternoon.

I am going to clean up the area and try to loosen the plug and see what comes out.  I am not going to force it.  If that doesn't work, it is going in the oil cooler/filter housing port.

Wouldn't that be the same pressure read in the gallery? Just asking...

The gauge reads up to 100 psi.  Not sure what the sender maximum psi is.  I would expect there is some room over 100 psi before damaging the sender.  On a side note when my OEM oil pressure sender failed it read 0 on the dash and 99 on the edge monitor.  Another reason I wanted to add this gauge.

No, the reason it won't be the same is the oil filter is the first thing that sees oil pressure. By the time the oil pressure gets to the sender on the side of the block you are at the end of the flow after there are many "leaks". Every bearing or pivot for the rockers, turbo, etc. equals a reletively small leak in the oil system. If they didn't leak there would be no cooling from the oil and the bearing life would be quite short. Most people don't know that most of the oil flow is for cooling purposes and the oil pressure that can properly LUBE an engine is quite low. Also, keep in mind that the oil pressure will be the highest pressure is when the engine is cold.

Yes I found that out when I was under there today.  I also seen the oil line that feeds the vacuum pump. If I known then what I know now I would have had my answer.  I took my truck to a mechanic the time the sender went bad because I was busy and needed it back.  Plan to install the gauge on Wednesday.  I have seat heaters among other things to install in my uncles '06 tomorrow.

100 is the absolute most it should it, and then rarely if even that high. The port in the filter head is after the cold oil pressure relief valve, which opens at 75psi. On a cold engine it can go above that, but I haven't seen more than 80-85 in the port above the ECM.

 

From what I have seen of others who monitor above the oil filter, and me in the cam journal above the ECM isn't that much of a difference. There is more pressure in the filter head, and IIRC that's where Cummins specs the pressure at, but it's maybe a 5 psi difference under normal operation.

Very close, but the oil filter housing will register slightly higher pressure.

Installed the gauge today.  It is installed in the oil gallery.  Used a short extension because I could not get a wrench on the sensor to tighten it.  Reads very close to what the edge does. Cleaned up around the plug and used a 5 or 6mm allen 3/8" drive socket, it came out with little effort.  Did I need to install it, probably not.  But I like to know what is going on and have a back up.  Second picture is a cold engine at idle and the last is after a 30 mile drive.  Edit: sorry for the blurry picture, it did not want to take a decent one.  I must have took 15 pictures and this is the best.

Isspro makes it too easy to add more gauges.  You could call it an addiction.
