For all the years I owned my 2001 2500 cummins I taught I had a 47re  but our tranny specialist at home told me they're all 48re in 2001?

Find you another specialist!

Even some early 3rd gen CR engines had a 47RE, but for the most part the 48 series came into play in 03 when Cummins went to CR.

It's always been my understanding that the 48re was put into trucks from 2003 - 2007. I know in 2008 they went to the 68rfe.

I kept the build sheet on my 01.5 & it is 47RE. 

Chech the linkage on the tranny, driver's side. If there are cables and metal brackets it's a 47re, if there's a big plastic box it's a 48re. Behind the bell housing and over the tranny pan.

Second gen autos were 47RH behind 12V and 47RE behind the 24v, early 03 third gens had 47re yet too, buddy of mine has an early 03 with a 47RE. 48RE came in 03 in the third gens.

The 47RH was used up until the 1995 model year and the 1996 to 2002 trucks have the 47RE. You really need to rethink your tranny guy's abilities.....

Thanks Tom, I knew the 12V had switched to the RE before the 24v came along just didn't know the year of the switch.

You're welcome, Bill. My truck is an early '96 and it is the first year of the REs. My 'problem' with it is the software to run it. A lock up switch won't work on mine unless I get the PCM reflashed..........

Lockup switch takes 20 minutes to hook up and 15 is just running wires under the carpet.

I had heard that before, but not any first hand knowledge. Defineately do the lock up. If you ever put an exhaust brake on you will need it.

How do you wire up the lock up switch?Where is the best spot to set up a temp gauge?

The early 48RE's used a TV cable just like the 47RE. In '04.5, they started using the TTVA on the 48RE.
