  1. That is why he went with the AEM filter setup in the first place, his OEM box warped like that and he chose cheap rather than quality and then didn't service it properly and it bit him so he bought a brand new oem air box at rebuild time. Has anyone ever seen a BHAF on a 3rd or 4th gen?
  2. I looked it over when he first bought it and told him not to use it as the filter was about the same quality as the K&N oiled filter elements, more of a screen door than a filter, then top that with his lack of proper maintenance of it combined to cost him 9K for a total overhaul "with extra mods at the same time" due to being dusted as a result of poor filter with lack of proper maintenance of it. This was on an early 03 third gen CR. He went back to a brand new factory intake box with the deeper pleated filter in it.
  3. Could you fill in your signature with vehicle description and any added option to help with further advice.
  4. Without a better VB and converter you will smoke the stock tranny quickly. The low pressure the factory VB supplies to the already subpar factory lockup clutch makes for a bad combo when adding power. Best spend the 1500 bucks up front and get a better VB and converter and the rest of the tranny will be ok. You also do not to need to get double disc or triple disc converters either a good quality single disc will be a great choice. I ran a BD Torque loc , VB and single disc BD converter rated at 450 hp behind my 560HP cummins for over 100K trouble free miles and dozens of sled pull hooks and several drag strip runs as well over the years. Sold the pickup with a bit over 150K on it and the tranny never gave me an issue but I added the parts before I added power which helped the cause.
  5. This is all good too but oil analysis is the best as you can have many other places along the intake system that will allow dirt entry into the engine other than pre-turbo. At the Mine I work at we use an ultrasonic leak detector with a sound generator inside the intake system of engines to find intake system leaks that can never be found any other way when we get bad UOA results back and can't find any obvious places for dirt entry.
  6. A lot of the big guys on the block are saying they can still operate for a couple years at around $46 a barrel but its the smaller startup companies that are getting worried from what I am hearing. The technology was designed for our specific shale plays and all the big companies are all set and not slowing because they have all the leases secured already and the cost of bringing a well to production in a shale play will be cheaper here now than other plays around the country, what they are saying is they will not bring in any more rigs and it will definitely mello out things for a bit. saw a couple interesting stories the last couple days, sounds like the Saudis are going to lose this one but it will keep costs low for a bit. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-11-30/oil-at-40-possible-as-market-transforms-caracas-to-iran.html
  7. All comes down to driving conditions as far as how long a paper BHAF will last. I drive 20K miles of dusty dirty gravel roads a year on My DDer and I replace the factory air filters twice a year and they are usually full. Even when I drove my 02 as a DDer with the AFE dry element with outer ware I had to clean it twice a year at minimum due to excessive dirt and fine dust that gets past the outer cover. On a pavement queen I can see them going a long time as some are saying. Just because a filter minder isn't moving doesn't mean the paper isn't deteriorating over time with weather humidity and wetness ect.
  8. A bit more info on this broad and complex subject from here in ND. http://sayanythingblog.com/entry/oil-goes-50-per-barrel-north-dakota/
  9. It will gradually drain itself due to having a small internal short in the plates basically, just monitor the voltage over a day or two and see if it drains down if you have time or don't want to pull it out. If it is straws you want to grasp for look at added options first, aftermarket stereo, alarm or security system or things like that that have internal batteries or even something as stupid simple as a phone or other charger that has lights or indicators on them or anything else plugged into the cigarette lighter that is a good one for slow drains on batts, sattelite radio radar detector literally anything. I had a brake controller on one of my pickups get sticky and I didn't notice the led light was always on under the dash and every time I went to start it once a week or so it was dead or very low, like I said start with stupid simple first. Good thing you are not paying by the hour for the repair, remember always start at the source and then look at / for obvious things first and then start isolating next when it comes to electrical gremlins it will make life more enjoyable and less stress full in the long run. Another good spot for slow drains out of nowhere, did you do any recent repairs and have anything apart and back together where a wire could have gotten slightly pinched this will often cause a slow drain but not enough to blow a fuse. Wires going through the fire wall without a rubber grommet is a good one.
  10. Find another shop, The sector or gear box and stabilizer have nothing to do with being able to align it but the tie rod end would.
  11. From what I understand it has to do with refining capabilities first and foremost then supply and demand and how many wholesale suppliers there are "or not "in an area "lack of competition" and where they get the fuel out of be it a pipeline load out or refinery direct load out facility and how far it has to be trucked to the final retailers and how many middle man handlers/haulers distributers there is adds to it as well. There are very few diesel specific refiners in comparison to gasoline so that is a major contributor then refineries are built and designed for specific types of crude and require different types of refinement processes. The demand for diesel has dramatically increased over the years as well plus the cold winters put a draw on the diesel fuel oil supply as the east coast still relys on fuel oils heavily for heating. This is just a bit of info my pee brain has on the subject, perhaps Skellyman or CSM can give more insider advice here. Here in ND we have a diesel specific refinery http://www.dprefining.com/ going on line about 75 miles west of my house this month and it is the first new oil refinery to be built in the USA in over 40 years and there are others slated for construction in the state as well one being another diesel specific refinery and one to refine crude into pvc products and pellets.
  12. AFE dry elements are awesome especially with the outerware to keep the big chunks out of the pleats, AEM is junk, buddy just dusted an engine on an 03 cummins earlier this year running a washable AEM filter system.
  13. Interesting articles I found and have read up on the proposed route and can't blame you for your frustration, it is in your hands as a state and land owner to handle these things locally for sure and since there can be no eminent domain pulled on a project like this even a small land owner can affect the routing of it. I can't believe they only offered you 1800 for 1/2 mile of right of way pay for it that is pathetic, I own 300 feet of right away in front of my house along a dead end road along a main BNSF railway and got more than that for lesser utility plow ins. http://online.wsj.com/articles/lawsuit-by-nebraska-landowners-may-decide-keystone-pipelines-fate-1416508187 http://keystone-xl.com/facts/myths-facts/ http://theenergycollective.com/jemillerep/270736/benefits-blocking-keystone-xl-pipeline-facts-or-myths
  14. Dumb question but have you isolated the batteries as in completely unhook everything from both and see if you don't have a bad cell draining the battery itself or just pull them and have them tested. I have not read through this entire thread very good but seems to be a lot of jumping around without starting at the source.
  15. Our dollar isn't worth the paper its printed on which leads to the high prices of everything. I talked with 2 people who have bought new ram ecodiesels fairly loaded earlier this year for under 40K. On a side note do these rigs require DEF or not? I am looking to invest in some realestate in the future and if Mike can set me up with real estate I can buy for the price of a pickup I am game....................................Here in ND 50-60K gets you a 25 year old run down double wide trailer house then double that price for a small lot to park it on.
  16. OK time to put on our get along shirt now. lol
  17. I guess one more pipeline that runs along side the other dozens of major pipelines through that same area is the icing on the cake, has nothing to do with the fact that the tree huggers with no common sense and the fact they have no idea how NAFTA and GAT have bled mexico and Canadas economies for the benefit of the off shore bankers over the years don't want the largest naturally polluted area of the world cleaned up by separating the surface oil out of the surface sandy soil. Better park all them diesels and saddle up the horses again boys. The half dried up aquifer that is among the highest polluted water supplies in the world is going to get worse than all the ag chemicals and fertilizers already in it, Oh wasn't I supposed to let that cat out of the bag oops, sorry and to irrigate sand and desert on top of it what a waste. Don't forget I come from a large grain and cattle operation so I know the ins and outs of both sides of the story and if we keep using all the chemicals and fertilizers to grow grains that nature never intended for the human body and cattle to eat like we are clean water is the least of our worries.
  18. You just helped me prove my point, take the thousands and thousands of trucks on the road carrying that amount of crude and the possibilities of them rolling or crashing makes pipelines a lot safer option all around. Imagine rush hour in a big city only with nothing but semis and that is what we have in western ND with all the oil related truck traffic running 24/7. 60,000 litres sounds like a lot, just shy of 16,000 gallons which is about what one tanker truck with pup trailer hauls alone.
  19. Can't comment on your local issues of the route with it but what I do know is that it will increase the road safety in our state by taking thousands of trucks off the road by getting the Bakken crude from ND into that pipeline. Second with trade laws the US and probably Canada is we can not export raw crude oil only refined products which is why it goes to the gulf where all the "Major" refineries are located. If the XL doesn't go through the USA they already have plan B in the works and that is a pipeline to the eastern sea board through Canada and then Tanker it to the same refiners in the Houston area so either we take advantage of this which isn't just for the Tar sands oil of Canada but the oil from ND as well that will head to Houston either way but if plan B wins because of politics we the USA lose a lot in the end period.
  20. For a farm rig in ND that is actually pretty good. I like to check these numbers a lot too and find that usual daily drivers that do see a bit of road time run in the low to mid 30's. My 2010 Hemi was right on 40 last time I checked a couple months ago which is the highest I have seen on rigs I have figured miles to run time in my area.
  21. Sorry to hear you lost your father. Have fun with the new to you rig. We still need to meet up one of these days.
  22. Not sure why there would be a core charge on a part like that but if they are the correct part I don't see why not just a hunk of cast steel so quality shouldn't be an issue unlike rebuilt components from cardone which I have not had good luck with personally.
  23. http://moparpartsdiscounted.com/ $77 each on this site.
  24. More accurate to send samples in for analysis the same as you do UOA samples. That way you know if there are suspended solids or it is beginning to become burnt if the mixture is correct or needs additives ect. Makes no sense to extend oil life and then throw your money away on antifreeze by unnecessary changing of it.
  25. We have many owl species around here, Snowy, barn, western burrowing, Great horned, eastern screech owls, long and short eared owls, northern saw- whet owl and Barred owls.
