  1. You might call Dan at Quad 4x4 and ask for his recommendations... He seems to know these trannies pretty well. http://quad4x4.com/ GB
  2. I was reading your post tring to find a equivalent or better filter for my AD150 is the FF5613 compatible? Thx GB
  3. I was able to apply a vacuum with my calibrated lungs and determined that they both leak by. I just purchased a second replacement check valve, and lo... it actually functions as a check valve should. GB
  4. Thanks, I purchased a new check valve because my original leaked by a bit. My new one seems to be the same. Do these leak by a little on purpose or should they only allow flow one way? Seem to me my new one is faulty. GB
  5. Isx, Where did you get your clamps? I replaced several pieces of line, cruise is much better but still just a little surge... I figure I just need a little more work. GB
  6. Wow, that is pretty steep! Sounds like the place out of Waco is the way to go... I think that you may need to tell them your axle ratio too as well as what you mentioned. I would recommend this for your new tranny. http://www.genosgarage.com/prodinfo.asp?number=K1444-0060-FLTR%20KIT It bolts on in place of your passenger side pto cover, plus you can place a magnet in there to pick up any ferrous material. GB
  7. I second that... especially since the cost seems to be about the same.
  8. I would think your clutch and rear main would still be ok, but ya know you might as well do the clutch if you can while you are there. I'd figure $1000 on a clutch. Best of luck... I am a few hours south of you, I will try and call around and see if I can find a recommendation for you or maybe a tranny. I 25 is not too nice to our 6 speed trucks. I blew out a dana 80 in castle rock a few months ago on my first run in mine. I would definitly check all your gearboxes...just to be sure they are ok. I found this 2001 on craigslist for 4500...just a thought.http://albuquerque.craigslist.org/cto/1838937397.html or this http://waco.craigslist.org/pts/1821185449.html or this http://spokane.craigslist.org/pts/1829306518.html If you just leave your truck and get a rental, I can probably find a trans for you in Denver, since you will be thru there on your way back. I wish I were going to MT!! Good Luck! Chris
  9. Here is a good video on the procedure: Chris
  10. Nice can of spam FLMAN! I just changed the the fliud in my transfer case with Amsoil ATF....that is some stinky smelling stuff! I guess if it stinks that bad, its gotta work wonders!
  11. I have been using Amsoil synthetic power steering fluid in my 2000 for the past few months. So far so good. Chris
  12. Nothing a little JB weld and duct tape wont fix! I am hoping its just vacuum lines, I dont really want to find out how much that control costs. Chris
  13. Hey ISX, Thanks for your input, I am going to check this in a few days and see what I find. I remember one short piece of vacuum line that looked pretty dried out, so i'll start there first. Thanks, Chris
  14. Anybody have ideas on this little problem? My cruise control surges, meaning it will hold speed, but as you are at highway speeds it will vary rpm roughly every 5 seconds. This gets to be REALLY annoying when on a 6 hour trip.... I have not done any trouble shooting yet, just wondering if anyone else has had this. Thanks, Chris
  15. Maybe the water pump bearings? Or the transmission fluid pump behind the torque converter?
  16. I just got home from picking up 1900lbs of beef from the other side of the state at about 720 miles round trip and averaged right at 21mpg with an average speed of 70mph. This route takes you over 2 pretty decent mountain passes, so I figure thats pretty good going there and back. That and it got better mileage than my 04 f150 did last year doing the same run with only 1300lbs in the bed. I'd say I did ok getting this truck:thumb1: This was my first "big" trip since getting the truck in February, driving it back from Denver. I tried running the edge at lvl 5 and mostly being careful not to flog it too much:evilgrin:, and it seemed to do just fine. Chris
  17. W&F, The press was a little tight going back together, but thankfully I found a combination that worked! Part of my justification for buying the kit was I was going to be able to use it for other jobs....Thanks for the heads up about the later model trucks, you probably just saved me alot of aggravation in an already "fun" job! Chris
  18. Mike, Here is the kit I purchased from Amazon with free super saver shipping. http://www.amazon.com/Astro-Pneumatic-7897-Service-Tool/dp/B00061SGZO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1276472742&sr=8-1 I did not have any issues with it bending at all, and it has plenty of adapters for other jobs as well. The major difference I can tell is that Quad's setup has the "correct" instead of "universal" adapters, and the press has a larger opening circle which will be helpful doing big U-joints. Also the opening dimensions of the quad press are larger compared to the astro. But like I said the astro press worked well, you just have to figure out which adapters to use, which isn't too hard. If you want I can lend you mine, just pay shipping to and from 88030 Chris
  19. Now that I have conquered the front end on this thing, It is time to start saving for some fun stuff! I am pretty set on not getting too crazy with it, and I would like to maintain my mileage so the rv275 sounds like the right way to go for me. Just wondering where you guys have gotten yours, if you got the full injectors or just the nozzles. Also if you just get the nozzles are there any precautions I should be aware of. Chris
  20. ISX, You'll be ok....Just crank up the stereo!
  21. I recently made the switch to amsoil on my NV5600 and I am really impressed with the much improved shift quality. Before I made the switch I talked to Dan @ Quad 4x4 and he said that several years ago the 5 speeds tended not to agree with the amsoil fluid but didn't have anything negative to say about using it in the 6speed. He sells the right gearlube for the 5 speeds (i think his is castrol) and also has the filter kits too. I would recommend the filter kit also, plus you can put a couple magnets in the cover to pic up any ferrous material. Chris
  22. Yeah, Dan the gear man knows his stuff. I have bought a few things from him and asked him advice on some transmission stuff. Thanks
  23. Actually pressing the ball joints in and out was not too bad. I have an astro ball joint press and it worked great. It took a little effort to get everything lined up right , but after that just tighten the press and tap on the side of the knuckle and they pop right out.
  24. Finally got my truck together. I ended up getting the hub bearings late Wednesday and found one of them had a damaged ABS wire due to poor packaging/ rough handling. APW overnighted another one which I got at about 12 noon today. While I was waiting, I replaced the passenger side hub u-joint; figured I might as well as long as I am in here. Glad this job is finally over... Even more glad that everthing up front is tight and ready to work! As for what kind of ball joints I got moog greaseables from Summit. Summit beat amazon's price and WILL honor the lifetime warranty unlike amazon. Hub bearings I got from APW lifetime warranty for about $250 ea. They are China made, not USA like they originally told me... Front ujoints from Orielly's Precision USA made @ $47 ea Lifetime warranty. Just a word of warning. $300 for labor is Ok but keep in mind you may end up having to change hubs if your shop has difficulty getting your old ones out. I used the FSM procedure and then had to add lots of heat to get them out. If your shop uses a slide hammer for removal there is a good chance that they may be damaged coming out unless they are very careful. Good Luck either way. Chris
