Verifying HX35/40 turbo size
Must be like Aston Martin rounding their 5.9L up to a 6.0L V12...... I've always heard of the he351 being a 60mm turbine exducer, so it's cool to learn the actual sizes

Made some progress on the VP install today, mostly concerning the tappet cover gasket and a stock filter housing delete. @TFaoro also helped run an extra coolant line to monitor coolant pressure in the cylinder head. The VP did go in the truck, but it is not tightened down yet, and I am waiting for the black paint to dry on the injection lines. Pictures of the VP and black injection lines will follow tomorrow, but all I have for now is the tapped cover gasket. Yes, that is yellow paint in the lifter valley, and I am not sure why it is there... Also I am aware my engine is dirty.... (pictures loaded backwards)

Verifying HX35/40 turbo size
Exactly.

Verifying HX35/40 turbo size
I consider that a curved blade...?? Yes, that is a curved blade. Helps spool quicker, especially when using a twin scroll housing, like the one found on the 12cm HX35's

Verifying HX35/40 turbo size
No, they measure turbine wheels by the exducer. So it would be a 60/60/12.

Verifying HX35/40 turbo size
Or just the replacement of exhaust driven turbos with the 48V electric "turbos", in the form of a centrifugal supercharger. That will be a sad day.

Verifying HX35/40 turbo size
Mike was talking about checking his stock turbah, that's where my comment originally meant to apply.

Help with a 1999
Be sure to cap off the end of the boost elbow before testing with the wastegate disconnected. Otherwise it'll leak and you won't be able to see of there's an actual gain in boost levels.

Verifying HX35/40 turbo size
I'll put money down that it's a 54 mm inducer, as all 24 valves that i have seen have the 7 blade version. Ironically, it seems as though the 7 blade flows more air than the 8 blade despite its smaller size.

Verifying HX35/40 turbo size
So fun fact of the day, there are two different versions of the HX35. The 8 blade HX35's were 56 mm. Then, Cummins quietly switched to a 7 blade version that's actually a 54 mm inducer. I found this out the hard way when I was rebuilding my HX35 and needed a new wheel...

Rebuilding a Holset HX35/40W turbo
The above mentioned $59 kit from DAP comes with a 360* thrust

Teardown and Rebuild
So that's why the HO pump idled around 11.22*?
-
trreed's upgrade thread
I guess. Tyler's industrial injection had silicon, this one does, and even the ho pump out of my truck had silicon.
-
Teardown and Rebuild
I wonder if that has something to do with the excessive smoke when the truck is lugged too

Teardown and Rebuild
So in case anyone was curious what this "Cold Rod" pump sounds like.... Here it is at idle. As soon as the engine is loaded, even with just the A/C, it starts to behave normally.

New pump showed up tonight! However, it won't be going into the truck right away due to a dry, cracked tappet cover gasket. (thanks to @TFaoro, whose favorite past time is to show me what's wrong with my truck lol). But, it is a good time to do this repair, if the parts store could ever find the gasket in their stock....

Ya I've been too busy selling stock truck parts!

Teardown and Rebuild
What???? I would never...

Teardown and Rebuild
So even though it still works, sounds like my pump was still eating itself.

Teardown and Rebuild
That was the question floating around last night as Tyler did this swap. My guess is that only a place with the 815 test stand would be able to tell the difference.

We'll see how long it lasts...

Teardown and Rebuild
@jlbayes do you know if there is any identifying marks on the PSG's? Such as if anyone could tell there was a SO pump with a HO PSG on it?
-
trreed's upgrade thread
No, this pump went on Tyler's truck, for the sole purpose of getting him home. I'm still getting a pump through DAP, which should show up today. Tyler swapped the PSG's in about 5 minutes and his truck runs great now, except for a stumble at idle. Must be a side effect of a cold rod pump!

trreed's upgrade thread
Yes it does. That area right around the speed sensor is particularly time consuming.
