Skid steers
Considering I'm not used to gauging things by an hour meter and more by how many miles driven, im having some difficulty gauging fuel consumption compared to work performed. Im a bit concerned the engine is using allot of fuel? I was told to run the machine at full throttle when doing any work. It's at about 2500 rpm, full throttle. Any ideas to gauge something like this?

The guy at bobcat quoted me 150 for all new steering control parts. I just got the service manual for my skid steer on the web. What a wealth of information! W&f, considering you are fleet manager, can motor oil and hydraulic fluid be mixed together? Saw the manual stating i can use motor oil in the hydraulic system! But it didn't say anything about mixing the two.

Called bobcat today. Gotta get the control area taken apart. Said pretty much the same thing. The longer i go without fixing it the higher the chance ill have to replace the swash plate... $700!

I'm not as bfe'd as you are Mike. I get dsl, full cell service etc. Im 30 min from a town in either direction. I don't think there would be any logistical problems getting propane out here. But yes, all good thoughts.

I'm trying to shy away from electric unless i have enough solar to offset that. That's another story though. Electric would still be cheaper i guess, just depends on how much i can get propane for. I think if anything i would go with a through the wall unit. They are nice. But i was aiming with a more even heat. Master bathroom and guest bedroom come to mind. I use 3 ceiling fans to push warm down and 2 box fans to push cold to the stove.

I'm very thankful to have the resources that i do. If it was just me it'd be allot different. I probably wouldn't even own a house at that rate, haha. The snow is coming. It's at about 4k feet around here and the ski resorts are getting good snow. I can watch it make its way down the mountains near me. I've been seriously considering replacing the electric furnace with a propane one as a supplemental heat source. I just don't have a few thousand sitting in the account for that right now.. Next year in going to repurpose the pallets I've got lining the leanto wall for the firewood and make crates to put firewood in. Then I'll use the bobcat to move them around. Then all ill need to do is just buck up from the log pile, split it fill a crate. Then when i need the wood, fork it onto the deck and bring in what i need for the week. No more stacking!

The neatest splitter yet
Whew! I Just got the rest of the firewood done. Splitter kept the wife and mother in law buried in split wood the whole time. THE WHOLE TIME. It is one heck of a spliting machine! I'd be curious to see how well the larger models perform. I'd love to have a 4bt with some old farm flywheels. Rough estimates of finished, stacked wood, 4.5 cords. I also have 4 ton of Lignetics press logs. Bringing my energy equivalent to 8.5 cord. Bring it on winter!! Had to take a couple shots of hard A to kill the pain in my back and a HOT shower. Tomorrow is day of resting...

The neatest splitter yet
So, a coworker came over last weekend and i rented a skeleton grapple for the skid steer. We spent about 6 hours cutting up the last of my log deck. Worked out really well. I wanna buy a grapple asap. I ended up bonsaing into the round pile and took whatever i could and dumped it into my leanto. The remainder took 5 truckloads to hand load that was left out in the driveway. The picture shows the results of the efforts. So i chipped away at this pile some today with a new splitter i bought. It's a DR Rapid Fire K10. It's an electric kinetic splitter rated to the equivalent of a 10 ton hydraulic splitter. Runs on 110v. This is their cheapest kinetic splitter model and got it on sale for $500. With what i have split, which is mainly paper birch, seasoned. it performed really well. I had the occasional Doug fir or Tamarack pieces which split even easier. All these species are mainly straight grained wood but the birch can get stringy. I really think for what it is, it will perform just as well as any hydraulic splitter. Yea, i won't put any crotchety wood on this splitter, but i rarely get anything like that. Especially when i buy log truck loads of wood. It took some time getting used to, but after spending the time, im used to how it works. It has some design flaws that i think should necessitate some changes to improve it, but i could just be picky. Otherwise, i see this splitter staying in my firewood processing arsenal for many years to come! I would say in overall, I've got about 4 cords and in 3 to 4 hours split 2 cord.

Going to Oregon...
Well I'm here in Oregon. Took 12 hours with all the detours and stops. I won't post much up until its all over. But passing through Salem, i think i got nailed by a photo enforced intersection. It was totally retarded. It was a yellow light when passing through. Would like some input from any Oregon residents on your traffic laws. I say this because if i need to collect any information to defend my case ill have time to go back and build on it. Thinking about whether or not if i get anything in the mail from them what the city of Salem can even do to me..

https://spokane.craigslist.org/hvo/d/bobcat-763/6309847165.html Here's one that was just posted recently. It's 14k though. I forgot to mention that. I did find that these were very popular models so i decided this is the model i wanted. I was looking to get either an s175, 753, 763 or 773. I couldn't get something that was too heavy because i have to factor that in when hauling it AND bees. I'll have to learn where these access covers are. I know there is a plug in the front for something. Is that what you mean? I called a local equipment shop and they said bring it by and they would take a look at it. Give me a few tips and let me know what they thought. They charge 75 an hour in the shop and 100 an hour in the field for any work. As with many things there always seems to be something that they are known for. Like the 53 block for us or the vp44 fuel pressure problem. What are the things that make these machines tick? I'm going to start looking at renting attachments. 75 a day for a skeleton grapple so i can start cutting firewood. Im way late on that! Harley rake is 150 a day so i can groom the driveway and road out to county. That'll be nice to finally have a road without potholes and rocks throwing me around every time. Your right, i think i will wonder i how i did without it! I need to get my hands on a dump trailer now so i can start hauling it around and make MONEY with it. Not sure what to charge though, haha.

Anybody point me in the direction for a digital manual? Im not used to basing things off of hours, so the concept of what use and abuse is, is new to me. Paid 11400 for it. Or i should say will... guy wouldn't go any lower then that. Has auxiliary hydraulic hookups and mounting brackets for a backhoe attachment. Came with a regular bucket no teeth. Like i said gave me tire chains also. I think he said he had a spare tire but i forgot to ask. I dunno if it has removable skid plates. When i flipped the cab up i wanted to wash it. It wasn't terrible, just not clean. These are all the pics i have for now..

I couldn't find any sites to download the manual from. But is available on Amazon for 50 dollars lol. I'm going to call a local machinery shop and see if they can give it a look over and see if they see something i don't.

Skid steers
Well guys, after trying to learn weekday i could about these machines, i pulled the trigger on one! 2003 Bobcat 763G! I believe they call it bobtach? Digital controls no key. Pretty neat. Bought it from a business owner that has his own well drilling and pump business. He said he's 2nd owner and bought it in Arizona with 60 hours on it. Moved up here to ID and then used it to help build his house! Guy has one heck of a place. Literally! He said after that mainly used it to do snow removal at his place. But he also said he would have some of his guys do snow removal at his place of business and he also had hydraulic outriggers attached at the back for his backhoe attachment. He said it was serviced regularly and had a shop do most the work. I seen all the filters had dates and hours on them... Upon startup it didn't blow any smoke except the startup smoke being diesel.. Its got a Kubota engine in it. Looking at the fluids they seemed fine. All were at good levels and nothing seemed out of place like washout or milky etc. So the engine seems in good working order. The structure didn't have any extra hardening or plating or extra welds. No cracks that i could see. Paint looked like it was good also for its hours. Has about 3350 hours on it. He said the bushings were replaced not long ago also. No leaky cylinders either. Most pivot points look greased. Bucket seems to be in good shape. Gave me chains for the tires also. Tires appear 50%? Mostly looks like and seems like a decent machine at its hour reading. I do have a few concerns about some things i noticed though. 1. This machine is a hand/foot control machine. I dunno how sensitive they are supposed to be but the guy said they'll need adjusted every so often? The left hand control has slop in it and the machine will creep to the right. So last night i figured out how to raise the cab and lock the arms up. Upon looking more closely, the right control looks tight and little slop. The left on the other hand, appears that the linkage is sloppy at the pump area. Looks like a square peg protrudes from the pump? The link that mates to this part appears to look like it's worn out. There also appears to be fluid leaking from this point also. 2. Behind a couple wheels, there appears to be wetness. in assuming the wheel seals are wore out.. 3. I dunno if i can source a manual for this machine, but i know next to nothing about the machine or engine. I need to figure out how to keep the machine in order and what's required of the engine. I say this because it at idle it seems to have a bit funky rattle sound. I've experienced this before with boom lifts and whatnot on job sites, but naturally it wasn't my duty to look into these things. What says you guys, any input on this?

Going to Oregon...
I'd prefer if i could at least stay within the boundaries of the law. But it sounds like Oregon makes it difficult to do that... Sounds like i can open carry in certain areas and only if the city I'm in our county doesn't restrict me. If it's in the vehicle it has to be unloaded or stowed away that renders it inaccessible. Sounds like the center console is okay to render it inaccessible. Portland is totally anti gun and the idea of open carry there sounds like an invitation for disaster... If i made the decision to carry concealed then it definitely would be the pocket pistol. Much less risk of printing...

Going to Oregon...
Yep, I'm driving the wrong direction... but the wife has never been to the coast. I haven't been to the ocean since i was 9 or 10. We're going to stay in Lincoln city and do that tourist thing. Go see the ocean, historical places, aquarium, yada yada. I need a break from things and the wife wants sights to see. So with that being said, i need to ensure im not going to get ourselves in the wrong place. She wants to cut through Portland for the infamous voodoo donuts, but i don't wanna have to smash anybody's faces in. A bit concerned about people and their retaliatory viewpoints on the kind of person i carry myself as being i live in Idaho. That brings up another point. My concealed license is not valid in Oregon. So anyone in Oregon wanna give me some advice on how i can protect myself? I'll probably end up at least wearing my kubaton and keeping bear spray handy. Provided i can't find a way to keep my pistol near. Call me paranoid, i don't care but it's always a burden i have to carry. I'm the man and its my duty to protect. Overall besides the aspect of protection and security i hope to enjoy my trip and try to have a good time and make the best of our vacation. We have been wanting to visit the coast for years now but life had always seemed to find a way to get in the way of that. Now is our chance!

Madness...
Has anyone thought to take a step back and look at the bigger picture lately? I'll try not to qualify this thread as religious and spiritual, but i can't help but think a message is trying to be conveyed... 1. Increased earthquake frequency. (Yes, i know they are an everyday event) 2. Threat of nuclear war 3. Wildfire galore. The west coast is burning up. 4. The east coast is drowning out. Hurricane Harvey, Irma and other multiples developing on the same path. I'm reading the writing on the wall... Meanwhile, I'm thankful I'm not on fire, but this is what i get to deal with. Even i need to wear an n95 to step outside!

Idaho in extreme fire danger
My thoughts were to get the 2 stage pressure pump, go out 150 feet 1 1/2" then Wye off into one inch lines. How much of the one inch line i can run off the Wye before i lose too much pressure, i dunno. This way in theory i could have me and the wife on each a nozzle. I would be aiming for more portability myself. I don't have a mountain behind me to gain pressure from. My setup would have to be from the truck or a skid steer i hope to own soon.

Idaho in extreme fire danger
Since you have the engineer background, im curious how much hand line you can use before friction loss is too great and need a booster pump or use bigger line? The fire kits that are sold only have so much line with them but u dunno if that's the max they can pump or if its just a starter kit deal.

Idaho in extreme fire danger
spent some time yesterday filing up a free pool i got from my parents neighbor. It holds water at least. Dang thing holds allot of water! I probably have about 800 or so gallons in it in the picture. It probably holds around 1500 I'm guessing. Nice little water reservoir to have until i can officiate a permanent system. This was originally going to be for raising fish in.

I'm hoping to stop by an equipment place Friday and pick their brain about it more too. I thought i read something about adapter plates or something... My plan is to get a tandem dump trailer that ill haul it with. It's quite surprising how light some of them are.
