wait to start light is periodically not coming on

Recommended Posts

im starting to get this problem and when it doesnt turn on an cycle its hard to start even if the engine is warm. its kinda like when i turn the key on its not turning on the power to it cause if i turn it off and turn it on then it will click on or if i bump start it and turn the key off then turn it on the WTS light turns on and as soon as it turn off the it fires right up. i can pull my ignition key out while the truck is running, it came that way when i bought it used. do you think the ignition switch needs to be replaced or a fuse or relay?

The delayed WTS light is the ECM not booting up properly. Could be stray a.c. voltage from the alternator. There is an about this in the articles section but I still have not figured out how to post a link with this tablet.

My key was doing the same thing as yours a year or 2 back. I started using the new spare key that came with it and it stopped. Mine was worn down quite a bit compared to the new one. That's my theory anyway.

It does sound like ECM is not functioning properly, but the whole thing with your key in the ignition does make one wonder. Someone just had good success with rebuilding their ECM for four 200 bucks,  but before you do that do make sure you have no excessive AC current coming off your alternator. Also check for codes with a good OBD scanner.

The place I'm thinking off to repair ECM is in Florida called Auto computer specialist. It may be more than two hundred bucks but probably still way better than paying a couple of grand. Were calling them and asking a few questions.

Either way let us know the outcome we're all curious about things like that.

I replaced the alternator already with a new not a rebuilt one some time ago when I was getting the jumping back and forth problem with the trans. And no huck ups since then. If it's the ecm.  Can I send in a different one or does it have to be the one off my truck . I just picked up another 24 v with its ecm on it. I would rather send it in to get rebuilt.

I also get a random check engine light.  I use my obd which Inova and I get no codes in the system

If you talked to an ECM rebuilder you could probably send them any ECM  you have as long as it is rebuildable. That is a conversation you need to have wth them. The key thing I think is just the key. I cannot get the new key I started using to pull out of the switch like the old one. Of course the switch has to take on some wear and tear just like the key so maybe something is worn there also.

are you saying you had the same WTS problem and using the spare key stopped it?

No. The new key stopped me from being able remove it while the engine was running. Separate issue from the  delayed WTS light. Sorry for the confusion.

its kinda like when i turn the key on its not turning on the power

The computer (ECM) has a delay before it boots up. The WTS light goes on when the power boots up

I had the same issue for a few years. It got worse and worse.  I finally got a new Reman ECM.... Fixed it

I also rebuilt and tested my alternator before I got a new ECM. May alternator had bad diodes.

Dont mess with you key and ignition on off etc. The ignition switch is not the problem... Just turn it on, leave it alone, and wait for the WTS light to boot on, then crank and it'll fire right up.
