P0933 Dodge - Gear Shift Lock Solenoid Ctrl Circ/Open

Broken wire maybe?

The code below is the exact code as is read from the Bully Dog tuner DTC screen and I find info on it on RamforumZ too as well as other searches but seems there are several things that can cause it and I have not seen wiring as one of them yet but not saying it can't be an option, the dealer will be able to see this on his diagnostic reader this afternoon I hope. I am wondering if my problem isn't tranny related possibly cavitating pump from a loose filter maybe that sounds like engine miss since I get gear 4 and 5 ratio out of range codes too. I had a filter come loose once already last winter and it acted totally different than this.

Got a head scratcher, going to leave it overnight to cold soak for dealer to do more testing. On way to town it went into limp mode got to town it came out of it, tech test drove could not find anything obvious, did a tranny engine software update and relearn sequence and we went for ride together so he cold confirm what I feel. He thinks possible lifter cam issue they had a problem with for a couple years and mine fits the time frame so he wants to compression check it and do more checking into tranny codes and see what happens when they see how it performs cold which is when one code keeps happening. More waiting until tomorrow now.

Picked it up from dealer this morning and it threw 2 codes before I even got home, both 4th and 5th ratio codes again and it went into limp mode again, they drove it two times and couldn't recreate it. Damn dumb luck timing on my part but it may work for me as I have documentation of them not finding any issues now so I am looking into extended warranty options before it dies completely, will sit in my garage until I know for sure.
I am pulling an oil sample on the engine as well now too just to see whats going on in there if anything, have potentially 6-7K of repairs upcoming so 2500 extended warranty will pay off if it works out.

Before I left dealership I talked with finance guys to look into extended warranty options as I know this thing has issues, looking at a Chrysler 4 year unlimited mileage $200 deductible for 2100-2400 depending on which plan I go with. Priced out a tranny alone and it was $3800 carry out if my core is good. so based on that alone I am ahead already.

I just need to talk to the service manager and get something in writing as they already saw the BD tuner in the cab so before I spend 2500 on an extended warranty I want it in writing that if they turn a blind eye today they won't come back on the next issue and say no no you had a tuner in the cab no warranty. Just want to cover my butt and make sure they will stand behind an extended warranty plan. Service writer said I never saw it so no issues here wink wink, mechanic says opposite we know about it warranty can be denied.
Will have a visit with them on Monday to see.box2.gif

Maybe I missed it but did these issues start after the BD Tuner??

Pick a LSD yet? Personally I despise clutch style LSD's and was making an appointment to have mine removed when I bought my 05, until I realized it was a helical gear design. I'll take open any day over clutch packs.

Nope have not picked a diff, need to get the other issues nailed down first before I go any further. engine Issues have been on going noticeably a couple months before the BD was even a thought and the tranny has been giving me signs for a few weeks as well.

One can follow the thread over on RamforumZ, I just started it a bit ago, I am waiting on a return PM from a member who is a tranny specialist over there, hoping he pops into the thread with some pointers.

I like the clutch type because they are bullet proof and simple and cheap to repair or reclutch and I can adjust the amount of tension on the units to make it act almost like a full Detroit locker or as little tension to act as an open diff.

I have the helical in my 05 and it has left me reaching for 4X4 many many times due to not enough wheel speed or torque transfer to react and engage on extremely slick surfaces like green grass, loose gravel or ice with a trailer on back.

  • 3 weeks later...

Well not the mods I wanted to start with but the 2010 Hemi is now at the tranny shop getting a rebuild with upgrades, hopefully have it done by next weekend and see what they found wrong with it. Once back I will load up the Bully Dog premium gas tune as that's all I run anyhow and let her buck and see what happens from there, got the engine oil sample back and it showed no unusual wear metals indicating a cam or lifter failure but I found my oil base number was almost totally depleted at 2.25 left "2.0 Is considered critical and gone" and the oil is rated at 9.0 base number when new so at 5k miles on the oil I changed the oil to a different better grade from amsoil, I had been using the XL series oil which is their lower grade oil so I went to the Signature series which is their best and will do some more sampling in the future to watch how it holds up from here on out.

Did you find the miss or do you believe its tranny related?

What are the standard oil change intervals on that engine? Seems odd that at 5k any modern oil would be depleted under normal driving conditions. I run Schaeffers 9000 5w20 in the wife's Mountaineer at 20k mile intervals, and still have a substantial amount of TBN at time of change. I could push it further but that's about what we put on the Mountaineer in a year, and its cheaper and simpler to just do a change and an annual sample to monitor engine health. They're also almost all highway miles, if she did a lot of stop and go I would never run it that long.

Since the tranny issue I have not drive it much so I can't say for sure on the miss, I am leaning towards the tranny causing some of the noise I may have heard as of now, will hold off until I get some miles on it for a couple weeks after the tranny is done.

I usually run my oil to 7500 miles but have never ran the cheaper quality Amsoil XL oil in anything I own personally before owning this Hemi which holds 7 qts so I decided to try it, I usually run the signature series and this kind of set me back on my heels when I saw the TBN that low and was flagged as such on the results. I switched to the signature series now and will pull samples more frequent for the next 10K miles or so to see what's happening. I was going to get in touch with Amsoils tech dept and have them check into this as well, the oil lab double tested after I contacted them about it and the results and came back the same.

I switched from Amsoil 5w20 XL which is recommended for the MDS equipped Hemi engines to Amsoil 5w 30 signature series which is the same oil recommended for my Nissan Murano Crosscabriolet convertible so I don't have to have so many different oils on the shelf. I never noticed a gain in mileage with the mds anyhow so from here on out I will just run with it turned off by turning on the tow haul mode every time.

Tranny shop called and she is ready to roll, $3245 out the door, I have not seen the itemized bill yet to see details, I supplied my own oil and line pressure booster fooler I bought just before this happened and the tranny shop said they install on all of these anyhow. Headed there from work to load it up and bring it home. Its In Dickenson ND 75 miles west of me so I got to go home a bit early from work hook up the gooseneck and boogy down the road before they close, good thing the time change line is half way between me and them so I gain an hour that way otherwise I would have to wait until next week.

They said that 4th gear clutch pack and converter lockup clutch were both damaged from slippage. They went back in with a Precision of New Hampton IA converter will know more about it by tonight and will post back mre details after I find out and have a chance to drive it for reference over the weekend.

Ha Ha! The local Dodge dealer wanted 3800 alone for a factory reman tranny that after core to boot for the same junk I had to start with. I have to say that with the fuel to haul to and from the tranny shop, two trips to the dealer for troubleshooting and the rebuild I have right at 3500 into it. Also remember this is the land of plenty so prices are fairly high for a lot of things with the healthy economy we have going yet here in ND.

They build the tranny with the same 4th gear clutch pack as the 68rfe tranny behind the cummins to live a longer life, said the new electronic trannies are hard to mod as they are computer controlled and no company has stepped up for the light duty tuners to unlock the ecm for tuning like they have for the diesel industry.

They also put an upgraded converter in it, said it is a bit tighter anti ballooning plate converter "Whatever that means" with better LUK clutch disc versus the stocker. Also do improvements to the VB with a shift kit and some pump work as well.

Prepare for the economy tanking a bit threre in ND... at least slowing a little temporarily.  There might be some good deals on guns, trucks, etc from the oilfield dudes who live paycheck to paycheck.

For now its basically a slight stabilization and nobody is complaining as it is giving everyone and business owners of all types time to catch up and refresh and regroup from the last couple years of going all out. Every thing in life needs these types of things for healthy growth, gives time to reflect and refine and streamline going forward to cut costs and come up with new ideas for better future longevity and survival. Only makes things stronger and better.

Got the Bully Dog GT updated with new update software from BD site and reregistered in my name now and got it loaded up on the Hemi this morning with the "Premium" tune. If the wife and I go out on the town for a date tonight will get my shot at the first feel for the fresh improved tranny along with some engine tuning from the BD GT as well, will see how it does at 0 degrees.

Thing drives awesome, I can actually feel all of the shift points now, not harsh at all but they are distinct kind of like older pre electronic controlled auto trannies where you could actually feel the shift points not like most new vehicles or the way it was stock where you could slightly feel the 1-2 shift and nothing from there other than engine differences telling you it shifted not like the soft sloppy sliding in shift points, converter is definitely tighter, throttle response off idle is like running a smarty with TQ management turned to lowest setting, very touchy and instant response almost touchy, will take some getting used to and part of it may be the Bully Dog as well but I think most of it is just the tighter converter putting more of the 5.7 Hemi 390+ hp and 407+ tq  to the ground now.

Now I need to see how it does with a trailer on behind it should pull nice, I think all said and done I was hearing the tranny issue as I can not pick up on what I perceived as an engine miss anymore either.

Now with the new responsiveness I definitely need the Limited slip diff carrier as I can see a lot more one wheel slip with this setup.
