Fuel Pressure spread

Recommended Posts

So I was double checking my fuel lines from the VP to the FF and LP for leaks since its a new install and found that it seems I have a TINY leak coming from the VP where the 90 degree hose attached is. I'm not sure if I just didn't get it tight enough or what. It was a SOB getting that thing there and tightened down! I feel I've cranked on it as much as I feel comfortable without breaking it.

On a different note, I'm curious on the best way to adjust the fuel pressure. Should the truck be fully warmed up and then adjusted? It seems like the warmer the truck the higher the fuel psi, is that right? Can it be adjusted while the truck is running?

I always wait until things are warmed up to adjust mine. I don't see any difference in pressure warm or cold though usually, unless its -30 or colder. You can safely turn the pressure up or down while the truck is running. It is actually better to do it while running so you know what the idle pressure it. Just make sure you are watching the gauge so you don't over pressure it.

I think I was seeing a difference between warm and cold because I was running on a bad thermostat. Now that it's fixed I'm seeing the same numbers warm or cold. Adjusting my lift pump is really sensitive! Just over an 1/8th of a turn is about 1psi!

So I got my pressure adjusted to where I wanted it but it took a lot more adjustment off the screw then I thought it would. Weird! Anyways, pressures holding steady now hot or cold so that's good.

I have noticed that the raptor is a bit loud when you turn the key for your wait to start. I hear it prime, doesn't nexcesarrily sound bad, I just didn't remember it sounding that loud when it was priming. Is yours loud at all?

Mine was real quiet for the first 6 months or so. Then it got really noisy. Not real sure why though. The pressure stays very steady and I have never had the regulator issues that others talk of. One thing I was just thinking about, did you drive the truck around a bit before you adjusted the pressure? Or just start it and adjust right away? The reason I ask is because the pressure will be lower right after start up usually because the grid heaters are cycling on and off. They suck up a lot of electrical juice. You might drive it down the road (At least 20 mph) and see where the pressure sits.

Initially I did just fire it up and adjust the pressure because it was sitting around 10psi at idle. After driving it a bit I did see it come up a little so I re adjusted. I've probably played with the setting 2-3 times now. I think I found my sweet spot so I'm going to stick with where it's at now.

Glad I'm not the only one with noise! I figure as long as pressures steady there's not much to worry about!

What raptor pump are you running?

Just the Raptor 100. I built my own 3/8's big line kit complete with spin on fuel filter. I originally purchased and installed the pump about 2 years ago. I have probably over 40,000 miles on the set up at this point and everything seems to be running just fine. Holding steady pressures and everything, just the noisy pump. I am in the process of rebuilding an old FASS 95 pump that I had laying around and will probably put that one back on the truck. Keep the raptor for a back up.

Just curious, any one else running the big line kit from Vulcan have what seems like condensation on the 90* bend of the JIC fitting that goes into the VP44?

I thought I got this tightened down enough but this morning on the way to work I noticed my fuel psi was 1-2psi lower then normal, so I popped the hood when I got to work and felt around on the fitting. Nothing really noticeable, but when touching around the 90* bend, it got a LIGHT residue on my fingers but really little. I'm not sure if its an actual leak, or if I never got my engine warm enough to get to that extra 1-2psi. OR, I'm just completely anal over this and working myself up over nothing! :ashamed:

Any help or insight would be appreciated!

So another update!

After trying one last time to crank down the JIC and push lock to make sure they were as tight as they could get. Still leaking

I gave Eric a call and he sent me replacement parts pretty much no questions asked! :thumb1:  Another awesome example of Vulcan customer service!!

After getting the old one out, it looked like I was leaking from where the spin nut is. See attachment.

Anyways, I wanted to make sure I got this one tightened down right the first time so I removed the intake horn to free up some more space. Got everything put back on and took it for a test drive. So far no leaks!! Over all fuel pressure on my gauge fell a couple PSI after install. It was hovering right around 17.5 at idle and would drop to 15 at WOT. I've since adjusted it to 19-19.5 at idle at 17 at WOT. I mainly did that to make sure I was maintaining that pressure since I'm not entirely convinced that the drop in psi was only due to the small leak I had from the JIC. I figured if it still drops, maybe I need to bleed my line from the isolator to the gauge or HOPEFULLY its not the pump going bad!

Any input is appreciated!
