HX35 Upgrades?

Recommended Posts

I agree with the above.

I've never done a wheel only change and don't think its worth the hassle.  You can consider a HX35/40 hybrid, but unless you are interested in used I would say skip the hybrid and go bigger.  TFaoro and I are very happy with our II phatshaft 62/12s.

Boost elbow and you should be just fine. Control EGTs with your right foot.

No problem there, boost elbow is already in. I guess what I'm asking is do the upgraded HX35 housing and larger compressor wheels produce any significant improvement over stock or would I be better off saving the $500 or so and invest in say a phatshaft, super b, or something similar?

I would hold on to the HX35W turbo.

I'm running +50 HP injectors plus the +120 HP of the Edge Comp.

But your going to need a module of some sort. You need it to do the boost fooling. Even if you did a Edge Comp / Edge Juice and used level 4 (+100 HP) and +75 HP injectors you still be fine.

Rule of thumb... For every 1 pound of boost you making roughly 10 HP. Or the other way around for every 10 HP you want to build you need 1 PSI of boost.

This is like pump discussions, there are many turbo wheel and housing designs and flow is as important here as boost. On my 02 with an II silver 62 I was set at 42 psi max boost which is the map of the turbo and ran 560 hp, this is a case where air flow was more than boost in turbo design, but I admit the silver 62 is a better mid to high rpm range turbo than low rpm turbo.

I was typing the question you answered before I saw your post.

I would really like to hang on to the HX35. It is in really good condition Mike. I have the Comp box already.

I have run a hybrid.  It's for sale now actually.  It's a bit better than stock, but it isn't the cost of a new one better.

After thinking about it, this truck is my DD as well as my towing rig, and hauling. Most of the time I have a 5 year old in the back seat. I would like to see a little more power but also a little better mpg. I'm leaning more towards the RV275's now.  I think the RV275's with the Comp, stock turbo, stock 3" exhaust may be all that I need. Anyone know of someone running a similar setup? I guess Mike is pretty close with his setup.

I have a gen 2 that I run RV275s, a quad ZXT and an HX35/40 hybrid with a modified tranny and I have the 4" exhaust from the turbo back.

I think it runs very well and I regularly get 22mpg's+ ( on the road ) hand calculated.

I opened up the exhaust housing from the 12cm2 that came with the truck to a 14cm2 to reduce back pressure.  There was a slight lag with the 14cm2 housing but when I added the RV275s it is much more truck than the stock version.  I run a positrac in the rear end and from a dead stop I can easily break the tires loose in a non-boosted launch.  Stock truck could never do that.

No smoke in this setup and it passes like a scared rabbit.  Everybody that drives this truck comments about its pickup and go!
