3rd Generation Dodge

This is a discussion forum of the 2003 to 2009 3rd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L and 6.7L Common Rail Cummins Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system.

  1. Started by anoldbiker,

I'm visiting a friend and when we were using his truck (05 Ram ~ stock) to take large pile of trash to the dump, when his #4 fuel line started to leak due to a crack in the line next to the fitting. When we went to the dealer for a replacement, they had a few on the shelf and told us this line has had problems of cracking. Per the dealership parts guy, the line is so short, it can't take the vibration over time. This Cummins replacement is different because it is now designed to give a slight flex for the constant vibration. Installed and it was working perfect. But my friend said this happen before. At 130k the first time and 180k this time. Geno's has a replacement t…

  2. I have a 2006 And recently purchased LED light bars which I would like to mount on the front of the vehicle. I will be replacing the two lower stock fog lights with LED pods and adding a 20 inch lightbar under the grill between bumper to use for highbeams. Ideally I would like to utilize the fog light function for the LED pods but leave the pods on when initiating the highbeams. Speaking of the high beams I was hoping to incorporate the 20 inch lightbar into the highbeam switch that's located on the steering column, does anybody see any issues with doing this? To summarize I suppose the total level of effort would be integrating the pods into the current fog light…

Could really use some help. The clutch on my truck starts to engage just a couple inches off the floor. It is a HD single plate clutch (don't know what brand, the guy who owned it previously just said it wasn't a SB or Valair. He doesn't know what brand it is) and if I'm not ready for it it bucks and chugs. I want it to engage a little higher. Can I adjust for this? How? Thx in advance for any help.

  6. I have been reading about the relief valves giving people problems. Is it okay to just put in the plug or is that a bad idea? I have read it makes the trucks run better but i dont want to hurt my engine

I installed a Air Dog 100 thinking the stock lift pump was the cause of hard start. It seams to be hard to start off and on. I dont hear the fuel pump come on and it is hard to start. I changed the fuel pump relay to a new one twice. if i turn the key on and off the fuel pump will come on and the truck will start. I am lost and cant figure this out.

We all know the last of the 5.9's was the most powerful, and least fuel efficient of the 5.9's. Cummins didn't put an external EGR on the truck to help it along, but to meet emissions they had to keep cylinder pressure lower by retarding timing... less power, higher EGT's, etc.. The common consensus is that a peak cylinder pressure at 9-12° ATDC is best for performance, and efficiency. That means that all the fuel needs to be injected, and ignited prior to that point so the pressure hits when it should. Take a look at this chart and you might see why the EGT's are high and fuel efficiency is lower. This is how many degrees ATDC the injector stays open. Top is …

  9. What are we likely to see/feel/experience?? Both long term...........slow death. And short term..........catastrophic failure. As of today, MightyWhitey has 205,612 miles...........and running great and getting get mileage. Other than the sensor issue in Feb., all is well. Reading over the years; and much more recently, it seems OEM CR injectors last anywhere from 40,000-400,000 miles. Not a real consensus for sure. Other than the obvious of making oil, white smoke and hard starts........................What are most "likely signs" of eminent CR injector failure, if any?? Noisier, RP variations from normal, poor mileage, etc. And what's the deal with us…

OK I know this can be done but I don't want to fry anything, so I am asking for help from others that are more knowledgeable than I. I have a set of KC HID lights that my nephew gave me. They are bright as noon day sun. My problem is that they are setup for 24 volts for a HMMWV. Can I get 24 volts to these lights out of my 2 batteries already on the truck? What kind of diode (is that what I need?) will I need to get 24 volts without backfeeding 24 volts into the trucks 12 volt system. If I need to I could add another battery to make a 24 volt system separate from the 12 volt system. If I do that how do I wire in the extra battery so I can charge it but again n…

  11. I have been contemplating the installation of an OnBoard Air system (on my '05 CTD) for quite some time. I wanted to install a PacBrake (which needs air to operate), also I wanted to have a couple of quick connect couplers mounted on my truck so I can air up tires etc. when needed. I also have an air horn that is just begging to be installed on my truck. Doing some research I found there are dozens of different compressor systems. You can easily spend way north of a couple 'G' notes on some systems but my wants were simple enough that I didn't think I needed to get too fancy. I didn't want to install the system in the bed of the truck because I sometimes c…

My wife wants my stockers off of my mega cab and I was wondering if anyone knew off the top of their head who sales a 20-22" wheel that resembles the stock laramie on my 06 mega. I like the look of the stockers and would like to stay as close as possible to that look. I've been searching but just can't find anything like them. Thanks for any help!

  14. Wondering if any of you out there could assist with handling this topic, I am very pleased with the modifications I have done thus far and just trying to finish the upgrades with focus on getting more fuel efficiency out of the vehicle. Vehicle Current State: 2006 Dodge 5.9 2500 Mega Cab Edge CTS Tuner - Low Boost Setting on 1 4" Exhaust from Turbo back with 36" resonator Stock Wheels and Tires Stock Airbox - This should be good to 450 Raw HP Currently we are doing heavy amounts of traveling with a 9.5 foot Cab Over Camper and 4 Place snowmobile trailer through pretty mountainous terrain. All the infrastructure is in place to handle these items from a airb…

Hey everybody, it's been a while! And I'm back with a problem... 07.5 6.7, 370k. Two owners ago supposedly replaced the whole top end of the motor at about 320k chasing what turned out to be a bad EGR cooler. The truck had been stock until then. It got a new head, new turbo, new injectors, and an H&S with SmartyJr. I run either econ or tow with default values. I've had the truck for a year and about 15k miles. It has been flawless with the exception of what sounds like chipped teeth in 5th gear that I'm ignoring... The last few days I've noticed what feels like a miss under high load. I have an Insight CTS, and watching what it's telling me I see no oddities i…

Ok boys and girls, I know I have been MIA, have had a lot going on, now I am back and I am in need of help!!! Driving my 06 Ram 3500 CR 5.9 to town the other morning, everything was going well then I felt a vibration and noticed the gear shifting was dancing. I clutched it and the truck seem to be running ok, slowed down to about 25 mph trying to find a wide safe spot to stop. When ever I pulled over I noticed I had a significant amount of white smoke coming from the exhaust. Turned truck off called a buddy went to the shop and got my rollback, (thank goodness I own the towing company...lol) towed the truck to shop, hooked up the diagnostic tool found one code about spee…

  17. Okay, so I have several questions about my 2004 QCLB2WD and what I am perceiving as a coolant leak. 1. About a year ago, I had a leak in my a/c condenser & it was repaired by a radiator & tank welding shop that's next door to my job. While it was there, they said the coolant was very low so they topped it off for me. They had caught me, as I rarely check the coolant level, but I was surprised to find the orange coolant in the reservoir tank. I was unaware that my 2004 Dodge would take that stuff (I thought GM was kinda the only folk with the orange coolant). Is this the right coolant? 2. Fast forward to about 1 month ago, and my truck develops a "whi…

I have a buddy with an 03 and his injectors are dying. He is looking for a good place to buy some injectors that won't destroy the bank. I told him about DAP, but we aren't sure just how good they are. Has anyone ever run DAP common rail injectors? Are they reliably and high quality? I know my 100hp 24V injectors are great, he just wants some reassurance. Thanks in advance!

JFYI guys..............Cooper Tire has finally gotten the LT255/80 R17E tire size out. It's essentially a 33" tire that's not crazy wide. They have it available in the Discoverer ST MAXX style. Gonna really think about these when I need tires next.

  20. A co-worker of mine picked up an 08 diesel and is having issues with the catalytic converter. If he drives around in town for two hours or so, his over head will display a warning that his cat is 80% plugged. Once out on the hiway and getting some flow through the engine then it will blow the 'soot' out of the cat. His question to me is can he straight pipe this year or will he need to get some software in order to fool the computer. The truck is basically stock, 4X4, manual trans. He is worried about the cat plugging up and then having to purchase a new one. I am not familiar with the CR so any help would be great, thanks.
