First break down, and first post here. I think its awesome that there are resources like this site to help others. This is my first diesel and I love it. I have put about 40k on it the past 2 or 2.5 years. Majority Highway miles. it has about 254,000 on it now and had 213,000 a few years ago when i bought it. I really like wrenching and fixing things, but with this being my first diesel, and something new to me i am a little hesitant and nervous to do some stuff, but only because i dont really know exactly what im looking at. Well today on my way home I was passing a semi and then bam, no power(throttle) what so ever. Turned off radio, tried to restart, nothing. Put haza…

I would like to know when your fuel gauge sending unit goes out, does it go all the way to empty? Or does it fool you into thinking you have enough fuel and you just end up running out of fuel?Anyone remember? Thanks very much.

My vacuum pump seal is leaking and I am going to just dish out the money for new pumps as opposed to just replacing the seals and having to tear into it again or take it to a shop again later. So I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations on aftermarket or remanned pumps. I think the guy at my shop said Dodge charges over $900 for the little freakin pump lol, I have already seen some Cardone A1 pump for like $300 so I may go that route unless they suck. I am hoping to upgrade, if that's even possible, especially the steering pump since I know our trucks steering can be quite shotty as is. Also, I think I will do the fuel lines from the vp to the injectors, the inject…

I just did mine and realized what to do but, need some input on this idea.First of all I want to point out that the bed rib frame right in the way over the tank lid is very thin gauge steel. So my thought on this is to go ahead and cut it out of the way and place new steel reinforcement that makes it removable and stronger than original. My idea is simply to add steel reinforcement that sleeves/ slides inside both ends of the cut away bed rail and bolt them together with a few bolts. It would need to be rectangular tubing that fits inside the other just like a reciever hitch does with square tubing. When you want tank top access you simply remove the two or three bolts and…

Talking with my Son this morning, He told me his 99 has began making a "poping" sound when he accelerates while turning.I thought I would try to get some preinspection info, or advice before we drop the cover off this afternoon. He changed the pinion seal and gear oil last summer with some Oreilly brand synthetic, and not being there I`m not sure if its a limited slip or not??I know GM vehicles have required what everyone called a "fish oil" additive for clutch pack diffs.I`m hoping this is the best case scenario.

:banghead:I guess I am now part of the elite! Yesterday, son Rob said the tach was bouncing again... mostly at lower rpm. the faster the engine turned, it smoothed out. (I replaced the sensor last fall) and today the truck fell flat on it's face dead. 1688 is the code stored.I put on an Air dog FRRP pump last fall too, but too late? This is a bone stocker engine with 130k miles.I will add, that the last 2 months we've had to keep the battery charger on to get it started in the morning. It would restart the rest of the day fine. I know it needs new batteries too. Volt gauge after it starts always runs mid 14v. I proba…

My 2001 will not start, starter wont click, lights will not even come on. Batteries have a sufficient charge but everything electronic seems to be completely dead. I dont even get the clicking when you open the door and the batteries are in need of a charge. Installed a new alternator last month and my Optimas are in great shape. I disconnected both negative terminals to see if anything would reset but it did not do anything. Started great and ran fine last night...:banghead: I know it is in need of a bath really bad and I have been driving through a heck of a mud hole getting to and from work...perhaps something came loose??? Any help is appreciated! - - - Up…

Hi guys,I've just noticed this black puff when starting the truck. I have no idea how long its been doing this. I bought the truck in November 2012 with 306000 miles knowing it would have some problems. So it could have been doing this since I bought it . My question...Is this normal, or something that I should be getting concerned about? This is the only time is blows the black smoke. Never going down the road, even when I get on it really good. I'm trying to embed a video of what the truck is doing. The smoke looks white because its coming right at the camera, but it is black.

I live near Source Automotive. They offer a valve body upgrade. The question I have is...are all valve bodies created equal? Just because they are close to me doesn't mean it the best on or even a good one. But the benefit is that they'd be installing it. So no finger pointing if something doesn't work as it should. I do have a transmission guy also that did my t/c and did a minor tear down of the transmission for inspection while it was out. He gave me an old valve body that I can use as a core. So I could have him install any valve body in the planet. Any thoughts?

A couple of weeks ago, I was tool'n around town and realized my Quad XZT was on high performance setting. I switched back to the low setting which I run all of the time. However, shortly after switching down, the engine light came on. The code was P0237. Since then, I have hardly driven the truck. Today, I disconnected the Quad XZT and drove the truck to run some errands. After a few starts, the engine light went off, and when I checked codes, only the P1698(I think?) was displayed. Here's my take on this. The truck was never over 40mph when the XZT was switched to the hi setting. It was dumping fuel with very little boost, and the MAP sensor thought the boost wa…

Does anyone have experience painting the valve cover while it is still on the truck? I took my truck to the car was today and degreased the engine compartment. It looks great except that the pressure blew all the paint of of the valve cover! I believe it is aluminum so there really shouldn't be any concern with rust correct? I would like to paint it red like I have seen a few. Any ideas?

I can really hear my fan when it's really hot, but I'm wondering if my fan clutch is running too much all the time. I am over cooling and temps swing between 190 and 175. Cycles more less. How do you diagnose if the clutch is working properly?

I did some more measuring and testing for the MPG crowd. Before I start I will say that I just verified my SGII and its right close to being on the money (off by 0.2 gallons). I'll assume that a slight error between the ScanGauge and the fuel pump. Now I my truck conditions are Edge set for 5x3, IAT fooled to 143*F, Engine coolant varied from 188*F to 197*F, winter fronts still on. Actual weather was high of 65*F (actual IAT was ~90-105*F) Now since I was on I-84 down in southern Idaho today I figure I open the beast up and let it fly low for once. So I set the cruise for 75 MPH and reset the current MPG counter and measure for about 20 miles of highway. I was p…
