2nd Generation Dodge 12 Valve Powertrain

This is a discussion forum of the 1994 to 1998 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L 12 Valve Cummins Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

  1. I have a mildly built '97 auto 4x4 - S300 class turbo (unsure on size - inherited it), three piece exhaust manifold, unknown fuel system mods, tons of tranny mods (Suncoast full manual valve body, Suncoast pressure regulator/overdrive solenoid, all the Suncoast billet parts, triple disk converter, etc) , 5" exhaust, cold air intake, EGT sensor/gauge, tranny temp gauge, boost gauge, etc. I bought this truck this way. I plan on doing some tuning as I am not happy with how it runs. It has better than stock power but tries to stall at cold idle when putting it in gear, only spins to ~2800rpm, and could just run better overall. I have a feeling a previous owner just started th…

  2. Greetings! I was driving yesterday with my scanner hooked to my truck trying to figure out my lack of overdrive and noticed my TPS was reading 18% with no throttle input at idle. I shut the truck off and mashed the throttle to the floor - 73%. I purchased a new TPS and installed it - same results (now 19% at idle, 73% at max throttle). I followed the procedure by @Cowboy in the tech articles to check all my throttle linkages. Got the front ball set 5" from the bracket upright. I probed the center lead on my tps harness, set the resting voltage dead on at 1.0v. Voltage at full throttle is 3.73v - within spec according to the tech article. It still reads 19% at idle and 73%…

  3. Started by RecoilFreak,

Greetings! Just bought a 1997 Ram 2500 12v 4x4 auto. I was told the PCM was bad - turns out it was the wrong PCM (for a '99 and also bad). ACS kept my '99 PCM and sent me a refurbished '97 PCM for an auto. My speedometer now works and my tranny shifts as it should (although O/D is not kicking in - might be TPS?). My alternator is not charging, and my tachometer is not working. Below is a list of info I have collected and troubleshooting steps I have made: PCM rebuilt by ACS (tranny would not shift out of 1st, speedometer, tach, alternator, a/c not working - now tranny shifts and speedometer works) 7.5a fuse installed in W/BS wire from pin 25 connector C3 …

  4. This is my first fourm post so be easy on me. Im in the process of 12v swap in my 99. I have 98 12v pcm and engine harness. Everything was going good until I got to the coolant temp sensor. I can't find a pigtail that goes to the coolant temp sensor. (I belive on 98 12v it moved from the back of the head towards the middle)Im wondering if anyone can tell me where does coolant temp sensor pigtail come out of the engine wire harness? Or is the ect pigtail in the underhood side of the harness? I also noticed I have no provisions in my fusebox for the fuel heater ect. Do I also need a diesel underhood harness? I'm stumped. Any help is appreciated. I have 20 trucks to …

hi guys this may or may not be in the right place for this post i was trying to get it in a forum that will get traffic by those well versed in the wiring specific to 98-99 trucks. i have a 98 ram that the CC will not turn on. the light on the dash will not turn on and attempt to work. this is not a very standard truck. the build is.. -1998 ram 1500 4x4 -4bt -nv4500 -98 MT PCM -98 cummins MT engine and transmission harness -99 2500 cummins frame, under hood and in cab wiring harness -99 2500 cummins interment cluster. CC is the only thing not working i can jump in her and it starts and runs like a 12v truck. no CEL, ta…

Are the circled parts needed when converting from Auto to Manual transmission on the throttle linkage?

  7. Hey guys, getting back on my project truck again and I need a little help. Looking for a picture or two of the location where the throttle cable goes thru the fw and where it routes in the engine bay before I start punching holes. A quick tape measure if the location would be even better. I appreciate any help.

  8. In my project I finally found a 90° down part that fits. The gap between the 90 and the firewall is about 0.700". If I wrap the 90 will that be enough of a heat reduction so I don't discolor the paint (or damage it) for that gap? Or do I need to create a bigger space behind that?

  9. I'm potentially short on space for my project build between turbo exhaust and firewall. I ran across these types of parts for 4bt engines, I have not confirmed anything for 6bt....has anyone used or seen these in the wild? https://www.dieseltuff.com/product/4-cobra-head-hotpipe/

  10. While I was out in CA for a truck show at my buddies ranch, I got into a conversation with a gent on his 12 valve where it was starting to get hot over time. Another guy suggested some add on kit that pushed more coolant to the rear 2 cylinders. Question for the group her is this: is this worth the add on? If it IS, I want to make sure to account for this in my build NOW while I can move things around vs. after teh build is done and ends up being a mjor issue. ANd if it IS worth it...who might sell this kit? I think this might be for RV aplications? maybe this? https://puredieselpower.com/Cummins/Dodge-Ram-5.9L-6.7L-Cummins-Engine-Parts/94-02-cummin…

  11. Started by PilotHouse2500,

Anyone able to get me some location dimensions off the nv4500 so I can place the boot right?

  12. As title states im in serious need of help. Was driving along in my 98 12 valve when i lost all input from the cluster. I have done self check and the cluster passed and gives codes 920-921-999. I have cleaned grounds in engine bay, have a brand new vin coded pcm swapped in a different engine harness that i went through and cleaned every connection and re wrapped. I have swapped in a cluster from another 98 as well as a 99 24 valve. I have un plugged modules without any change checked relays swapped them around as well as checked fuses. One thing that is odd is usually everything i read with regards to no bus is the lack of a WTS light. On my truck KOEO the WTS and OD off…

  14. This truck has about 4.7A to almost full 5A draw. Now I can tell you what fuses stop the draw but not sure what to do next. Tag @Auto Computer Specialist hopefully he see this. In the PDC you need to pull the 20A PCM fuse #3. Then the 10A combination flasher fuse B. Then in the cab the IOD fuse 12, integrated module fuse 13, and cluster fuse 14 in the dash. This drops the total draw to 0.2 Amps total. I've got a power distribution map but in PDF format. michael nelson wiring diagram power distribution.pdf

  16. Started by LD-Ordie,

Recently installed a flatbed on my 99 3500. Could not use the original filler tube with the anti spill valve, Now I'm taking a bath every time I fill my truck with fuel. Not sure I can remove the original one without breaking it. No luck finding one on the net or local parts store. Anyone got a source or an option?

  17. Started by PilotHouse2500,

Looking for a good replacment for the in tank fuel pump for a 94 2500 12 valve fuel system. Old one says Carter, but Summit images don't look similar. Any help on a good quality replacement brand and model number?

  18. Started by Spdfrk,

Has anyone used a GDP intake or similar(think crazy Larry has a version too)? Heard airflow to the back cylinders wasn't good stock so was thinking about trying to help with that.

  19. Truck is a 1999 quad cab manual trans with high mileage. Did my VP44 a couple weeks ago and after its hot it gets a bit of a random miss at idle. I think there's a good chance one or more of the connector tubes didn't seat back in properly. Since the injectors have 150K, 200K or even more miles on them I'm going to do new injectors and new connector tubes (I have no record of them ever being done and I've put 100K on it myself and the previous owner didn't ever have them done maybe they are even originals!). While I'm in there I'll check and adjust valve lash. I'm not super confident on this. The only time I've done injectors and valve lash was doing a qu…

  20. I am going to install an ATS deep pan on my 47RE and if I remember correctly Chip's Trans in TN used the 727 style open Wix 58707. The ATS extension block for the deep pan has 2 holes vs 3. Does it even matter what filter design is used between the 2? I guess if I run the early version I just need to confirm the orientation is the same as before with the large hole. Thanks in advance for any input!
