Question, what is the normal or usual reasons for a starter to hang? I walked out of the office, fired the truck and it was the strangest damn noise, once i realized what it was, I shut it down, restarted normally,
home now, tried to reproduce it and it seems to be fine now.

I have the truck on ramps cooling at the moment and going to inspect the starter to make sure its not lose etc. it was the damnedest thing
FYI, i just replaced the batteries and the truck has a very brisk start to it now. is the starter getting worn??
Thoughts?

Mine did that, replaced starter and never again has hung up.

I would think the solinoid hung. Chances are from many cycles of use. It happens at times with age.

You can rebuild it yourself for about half that over a few brews and a little time. I do believe there is a write up and the kit is available from different vendors.

That is an option. I just checked the starter. It is tight. I will start searching for a rebuild kit.

The contact coming from the power side wears much quicker than the other side. Once the power side wears enough it can wedge the solenoid in place. Not hard to fix at all

Could of been just the plunger contact arced welded to the other contacts. I would start looking at the solenoid parts for damage or debris that might hang it up.

I am ordering the kit tonight. I have new cables on the way so i will do the repair at the sametime, i looked over the starter and shes starting just fine. So i think the risk is low to continue until parts arrive

I got my contact kit from gould gear came with plunger and bigger contacts, he said that to about 350 k is all you should need, not even bearings. Contacts and plunger is what usually wears out few times first before the whole thing needs to be overhauled.

I'd just go with the contact kit.

You can order the whole kit, but when you take that solenoid apart you'll see that contacts are probably gone. And rest still looks good. Next time all you'll need is contact kit and what's left over from the whole kit to do a complete rebuilt.

i just placed the order for the contact kit, if it needs more, i will order the rest of the parts and drive the First gen

the LarryB kit arrived, it was time, $35 and change to my door step and i have a starter the kicks like new
