Hi newbie here I am just getting my first diesel pickup a 1999 Dodge 2500 SLT 5 spd which I will mostly use for towing a fifth wheel and would like to up the HP .Towing will include steep hills 5-10% grades 3500-9500 ft . I was thinking about better intake air flow and 4" exhaust and a exhaust brake . I see Van Aaken , Quadzilla XZT , smarty and Edge EZ listed most for chips/programmers . Can I just and a programmer for the extra 30-50 hp or do I have to add a exhaust elbow too . I have a Bully Dog boost gauge already and a EGT gauge that is not hooked up yet and was thinking of adding a fuel pressure gauge also.

I agree the Donaldson B085011 is listed as a "primary" filter. 

But looking more closely at the details, it does not meet the old standards of primary secondary filters etc (and the old accepted use of those terms.)

 

The new testing standard is ISO 5011.

Looking at this page, the manufacturer claims a 99.9 percent efficiency. 

 

When we look more deeply there are two types of test media....  ISO 5011 Fine and ISO 5011 Coarse.  (see this page for the two particle size distributions. http://www.particletechnology.com/test-dust)

 

Donaldson does not list which they used.  Both samples have particles as small as 1 micron.  Just different amounts.  (the fine seems to have higher percentages in the lower sizes.), but it works pretty well.  I have no conclusion from this information that it could be worse than the stock filter, and significantly better than a K blah blah type.

Notice the reality vs the claims. 

 

It is extremely hard to come up with the exact correct numbers.  But from what I can see, I feel confident that the filter I use is "good enough" for a mainly on road vehicle, with some off road use, and an operator that understands his vehicle and maintains it properly.

 

Anyway, I run my bhaf without worries.  I use differential pressure for when to change.  The only thing that i could worry about is water splashing.  but I don't run mine in mud bogs etc.  I might want to redesign the holder if water splash was more of a concern.

I've never heard of this but interesting to say the least. I use the Donaldson B105006 with a pre-filter that Eric sells and haven't had any issues and trust the filters doing its job.

Dieselfuture I found the tag in my glove compartment showing my gearing as 3:55 so I put on 265/70r16 tires , according to my mgh gauge I am only getting 15.8 mpg and with the speedo showing 60mph with the currant tire at between 1900-2000 rpms ,I wish I had gone to larger tires. I  am installing a Ultra guage soon and see what it has to say, I cannot decide on air filtration yet , I do run a k&N and a Outersware prefilter on my jeep and I trust it , but I understand the possibility of dust and oil getting into the turbo so I wont do it on the cummins beoynd that I may try the BHAF wit a prefilter but water splash is a concern for me as I know I will make creek crossings in this truck.

Stock is 265/75 R16 typically. The other that is little bigger is the 235/85 R16 (1mm taller but 1.1 inches narrower).

 

Highly suggest a BHAF over any other washable filter. I've seen way too many failed engines and turbos to K&N, S&B, AFe, etc. Just not a good idea to use a washable filter in the back country dust and dirt. Splash problems I've never had an issue with it being I run flood highway, creek crossing, deep snow, etc.

Are you running the BHAF alone or with a pre-filter?

I think it's more of a preference or if you're in an extremely dusty environment. I'm in the PNW and chose to run a pre-filter.

No prefilter. Yes, I run dirt roads too. My problem is the prefilter ends up with holes and no longer a filter because of where the BHAF rides in the heat shield. I had an Outerwears prefilter it barely lasted one year and was falling apart.

I have run my truck for a little while now and it needs help when pulling the hills with my trailer a 6% hill with a straight shot it will pull well if I push it hard at the bottom but curvy roads with slow corners and I end up staying in 3rd not enough power to go to 4th. I am looking at a edge EZ and a Quadzilla XZT right now , the cost is good and they are basically plug & pray no messing with tuning I'm just not that up on diesels yet. For the XZT I was thinking the XZT+1008 tune or XZT+1011 for the high idle in cold weather and then I will add a BHAF and 50hp injectors if needed . Which chip would you suggest ?

The quad because you can get different tunes.  Beyond that they are the same

Yes you can have the tune changed if it doesn't work out , but you have to take it off and send it back to them, bummer.

You can flash it yourself.  Every xzt tune is hosted here.

My truck has about 130k on it.  It had over size tires on it till about 125k on it.  The steering has had parts replaced on it 2 times.  Upper and lower ball joints both sides.  It is a automatic trans.  Between 35mph and 40 it was always jumping in and out of overdrive.  It seemed like it was always hunting for the right gear when slowing and then excellerating.  I have never towed  anything just haul heavy stuff from time to time.  I never saw anything better 16mpg.  I went back to the stock tire size about 5k ago.  With no other changes my truck the shifting problems are gone.  My mpg has gone up to 18.5.  My truck excellurates faster, gets better mpg, steers better, and has much better ride.  I see no gain in having larger tires other then a stiffer ride, more expence.  When you change tires size.  You mess with the gearing tomuch.  A larger heaver tire is harder to rotate hence loosing power.  Just my 2cents on larger tires.  Sorry for the bad grammer

Me78569 is the a cable to do the flashing myself that I need to order when I order the chip and I am guessing it will probably require a computer with win vista or 7 and up right ?

 

you just need a usb mini cable You can flash with any version of windows from xp through 10, xp, vista, 7 are all easy 8 and 10 are a touch harder, but I layed it out in the flashing video.

Ok I ordered the quadzilla XZT and now I'm looking at a fuel pressure gauge I'm thinking a ISSPRO electrical 40psi unit , I know mechanical is best but also harder to hook up. I already have a double pillar pod and will have to put the fuel psi gauge elsewhere. I saw on the cummins forum that mopar1973man had a article on fuel gauges but could find it.

Well you could always get the 3 gauge a-pillar mount and put it there.

 

I'm not sure mechnical is neccesarily better then electric, just most agree mechanical to be more reliable but I think if you're going with isspro you'll be fine either way. I know @Mopar1973Man is doing just fine with his electric ev2's from isspro so get whatever suites you.

 

40psi gauge seems a little high to me for fuel pressure on our trucks. You'd only be using maybe half that gauge at any one time and would make getting a more accurate reading from it difficult. I'd recommend a 30psi gauge.
