i have the wonderful 53 block with 17 inch crack.. so i bought a 2002 bluebird bus for the engine its a 56 block.. my problem is we swapped the 2001 dodge cummins out and installed the 2002 industrial cummins from the bus, we installed all of the dodge injectors, the computer injection pump, vac pump, power steering pump, now the dodge didnt have a crank position sensor but the bus did, both have cam position sensors.. now we have it running runs pretty good,  but tach only works for 2 or 3 seconds then zeros out, i get a code for cam position sensor have changed it with 1 from the dodge truck and does the same thing check wiring looks ok worked great with 53 block just a bad water leak please help , thank you and God Bless

  • You likely used the wrong timing case and gear. Install the timing case from your 01 engine along with the cam.

  • thank you for all your help, we are up and running... we had to run the cam and gear, the timing case and cover from the dodge everything else is working as it should

Could be the tone ring or enciter ring on the cam. To replace you have to remove cam. Might be others that know more but that seems plausible to me

Most find that it is better to cut their losses and get the right engine year range.  I guess the bus application did not do the same changes as the dodge application.

I don't know a whole lot like most around here but I think that I would simply look into getting an aftermarket tach that will run off the alternator.  Might try finding one that is thin or nimble enough to mount discreetly in front of the factory tach.

Won't work. There are TDC and speed signal by the engine required for different things. When the tach signal drops the ECM gives up on the idle functions and hands it off to the VP44 to attempt to limp mode home since the VP4 has its own tone ring and TDC sense. Other functions like high idle, cruise control and other PCM like transmission control need that tach signal to work right. So putting a external tach gauge on will let you see RPM but the rest of the truck will malfunction and behave weirdly without tach signal.
