This has been going on for a long time now. My cold starts are perfect no hesitation fires right off. When I start the truck after work in the evening or whatever when it has been warm I fire it up and have a rough idle for like 10 or 12 seconds. Also accompanied by blue smoke. WhT the heck is the deal? Iv been putting up with it for a while but I worked on a 24 valve at the shop the other day that started and ran way smoother than mine.

  • Mike's pictures show you what to look for.  Valve stem seals are about two hours to replace.  53 blocks are only really an issue if you start it cold and beat the piss out of it before it's warmed up.

  • My guess is you truck is not going to fall a part at the moment. So take breath and be calm.

  • Oil is getting into the combustion chamber.

Well, there’s a couple ways. Most likely is one or more of the 24 valve stem seals.

The more you pay attention to these trucks the more they brake. You're not the only one having issues like this, don't feel singled out.

Ummm that is part of the reason I pull the head and had it reworked. I had failed valve seals. Valve guides start to fail and valve wobbles and the seals get damaged.

Mine started to smoke a lot on start ups, more white then blue, but some blue in it. Used just a little oil too.

Pull valve cover and see if anything out of place

What should I be looking for? Tempted to sell the truck being this issue and having a 53 block. Problem is I’ll never find one this clean with these options ever in my life.

Well I never ever tag it when cold and rarely when hot. Makes me think the P.O. must have ran it pretty hard. I know he towed a good bit and did long hauls. I want to be sure it’s balve seals that are the problem what are other symptoms?

Blue smoke is oil.  It's either valve seals, bad head gasket, bad rings, or worse.  There are no other symptoms.  Cold oil gets in the cylinders and can't combust like the fuel does, and so you get the rough idle.  Easiest is to pull the valve cover, dig around in the oil for parts of the seals, and check the seals visually.  It's a 10 minute job.

If my seals are bad that means my guides are bad to right?

Oh boy I’m crapping my pants now. Lol. I can’t afford any expensive repairs right now.

Lol yea I am getting a bit worked up. So when I pull the valve cover I am looking for little bits of valve seals and what else?

The only way you going to find the seal bits is dig around with your fingers. I never seen the bits of seal till I tipped the head and let the oil drain off then the seal bit showed right up. Most likely find 5 and 6 cylinders with the most. Then you need the valve compression tool and take the springs off and check and see if the guides have excessive play. If the guides are worn then replacing the seals will not hold up.

In my case I'm glad the head gasket went. It would of really sucked to do all the valve work to replace the seals and then just find out that I'd been the same boat as @Dieselfuture where the seal would of been damaged again by the wobbling of the valves.
