So I have had the first major problem with my 02 2500. Got the truck out Saturday afternoon to go to a church dinner. Get ready to leave the dinner and my truck won't start. When I key-on the ignition I don't hear the FASS kick on, then I notice the wait to start is flashing. So obviously I am assuming the worst, a dead ECM. The truck would just crank and crank and crank. Call for tow and of course it will be awhile, so I leave the truck and wait at home.

(A side note, before I left the house that day when I first got in the truck and turned the key on, the FASS was delayed in kicking on. Thought it was weird, so I turned the key off and back on again and everything seemed fine. I figured it was just a fluke.)

2 and 1/2 hours later I get the call from the tow driver. I get there and of course human nature tells to try and start the truck. Turn the key on and the FASS kicks on, and the WTS illuminates with the normal delay since it was cool outside. The truck fires right up. I get out to thank the driver for coming and try to pay him for a dry run, and then the truck dies. WTS flashing and will just crank. So had it towed home.

Sunday morning same thing, key-on, no FASS, and flashing WTS. I decided to clean the battery grounds, they were somewhat corroded. After cleaning the grounds, truck fires up, runs for about 10 seconds and dies. WTS flashing. I then cleaned all the terminals. Now when I key-on, the FASS kicks on for the brief second, the WTS illuminates and stays on indicating for the grid heaters. But by now the batteries are so weak the truck won't turn over. I tried charging and boosting each battery, but it would barley crank.

So can weak or bad batteries cause this issue?

Intuition leads me to a bad ECM, but the truck ran a couple times, and the WTS is not delayed. I did the key trick for codes: P PCU - p1693, p1694, P ECU - showed no codes. But I will still put the scanner on it. Does this sound indicative of a bad ECM? I do NOT have a No BUS message either.

Bad IAT sensor?    Bad grid heater relays?    Bad grid heater?    Corroded grounds?

Open to input, suggestions, any help!

Didn't have time  to work on the truck last night. But I made a jumper for the FASS relay and a test plug for the VP44.

You can put the different ECM in for testing purposes but I wouldn't leave it in for too long. You need to figure out what fried your ECM in the first place, seems that most common problems are altern

I'll try that as a last resort if all other troubleshooting fails.

ECM was shipped to ACS yesterday.

Got the truck home on the ECM from the 2001. In the meantime will be testing for AC noise and doing the ground mod.

I'll report back once my repaired ECM is returned. The OCD in me stamped the case of my ECM with the last four of my VIN to see if I get my ECM back or one that was already repaired.

So I picked up an Innova 3320 since my Craftsman multimeter was too basic.

Started the truck cold and the grid heaters were kicking on and off. Both batteries were at 14.24 volts at idle.

For AC noise I got intermittent readings of .017 to .019 and then I would get .048 to .051. I'm not sure why the readings would fluctuate. But with those numbers I'm assuming the alternator took out the ECM.

Readings get higher when the grids pull a load on the alternator. If written correctly your readings are very acceptable. Not many see as low as .017.

It was definitely .017 to .019. I guess my ECM just died from age. @Mopar1973Man

@Mopar1973Man @pepsi71ocean @IBMobile Just got an update from ACS. My ECM is done and on the way back, due to be delivered tomorrow.

Their findings report I am somewhat skeptical about seeing as how I drove my truck home on another ECM. Which I guess the "short" was actually the AC noise. Here is the email they sent:

"Great News!  Your unit has been completed.

Tracking number is- UPS 1ZR39F470354941703

Tech Notes: PLEASE READ BELOW ( there is a short in vehicle )

Our findings: You unit came in shorted out, your... unit arrived dead, APP pedal, lift pump circuit, CPU as well as your pins were reflowed. New flash chip as well as latest updates ( your engine wiring harness is in short!!!)

Prior to installing repaired unit: You must have repaired your short. Do protocol maintenance prior to installing the unit ' wiring , battery & terminals, alternator, sensors, etc... Please tend to all codes present, if there are ANY p0600 to p0609 codes please MUST replace batery & terminals prior to installing unit. All short in vehicle must be repaired. If there are any TSB (Technical Service Bulletin)  they must be tended to prior to installing unit. Make sure all parts replaced are OEM(Original equipment manufacturer) parts are a MUST! All Problem in vehicle must be tended to prior to installing unit ( failure to do so will result in damage to the unit and it will not be covered under warranty).

UPDATE!! Finished the ground mod last night and installed my repaired ECM from ACS. Truck started and runs fine, did not have time to check AC noise but will do so tonight. I did have a check engine light. With the key trick I got P0230, P0382, P0380, P0521, P0118, P0113, P0237. But dummy me didn't disconnect the batteries when I unplugged sensors and the alternator for the ground mod and I'm guessing using the wrong ECM threw some codes as well since one of the codes was for oil pressure. But on the second start the CEL was off. So far only have driven 30 miles and no issues. Thank you ACS

@Mopar1973Man Just tested ac noise.

Passenger battery:

Max .010 at the terminals.

Max .016 at the alternator post.

13.92 volts at idle on hot engine

Driver battery:

Max .010 at the terminals
