Does anyone know if there's a way to tell if an automatic trans has been rebuilt? I bought at 190K now at 244K with no problems so far except  lately it has been slow to go into 4th at times.

You'd have to be able to look at the torque converter and see if it looks OEM or maybe has any identifying labels or part numbers on it. 

 

Pulling the pan might let you look at parts of the clutch packs, valve body, solenoids, etc., to see if anything looks aftermarket there. 

 

Look in the pan for any bigger than normal debris. How long has it been since a filter change and refill? It could just be the stuck valve in the valve body causing the delayed 4th gear shift.

Yes that is always a big question should be a hour meter or something on them. What did the seller say? You would think it that many miles it’s had a rebuild or 2?right.  So my 1999 has like 1970 k on it bought it new about 150 k ago I had a DTT tc and vb put in  the installer was a racer as bill k  was so they talked a couple times on the phone during the install   But I will all ways remember one of the last things the installer said to me as I paid him and got the keys   Wonder how long this thing will last   It has a 89 % converter. Pretty stiff hook up  hold on to your beer. So I think you most likely have been rebuilt.  But was it a stock build or a custom performance. I think I would find a good shop. Work to find that sometimes have them drop the pan and do a look see also they can pressure test it I think maybe a new valve body etc and I see your in Oregon pretty close to bd in Canada. I think I would take a planned vacation and have tranny appointment with them for a couple days   They can fix you right up

Yes he is and I have a customer that will loan me a tilt deck trailer if/ when that happens. I think the trans is really okay for now it just needs new sensors that 01_CUMMINS_4X4 showed. Thanks to all you guys it's good to have people that know about these trucks. Next trans service is due in 2,000 miles so it will be cooler weather then. 

Remember,  you have the new transducer and Borg-Warner solenoid that I tried in my trans.

Yup. There isn't any way to tell. Even my 1996 Dodge that @Dynamicbuilt for me looked good inside. Even just opening it up and looking won't tell you much till you take it apart and look at clutches, bands, etc. No way to know...
