sorry to be a:postwhore:but my rear brakes have gotten to where they lock up when jus barley applying the brakes it started out just when i was settin and it rained the first time applying them theyd lock up but now i can feel them grabbing all the time:banghead:. i know the shoes arent wore out due to a few months agoe i had a wheel seal and bearings go down:spend:due to prevous owner over tighting the nut:doh: the shoes where cleaned with brake cleaner. has any one else had this issue ?

adjust by popping the plug out of the backing plate (a rubber oval plug) and use a flat-tip screwdriver or 'brake spoon' to spin the star adjuster..Best to put the rear axle on stands so the rear tires are off the ground, to be able to spin it and check for pad drag correctness.It could be that, but I doubt it. I chased this issue for weeks on mine. But, you never know :)Good luck.

Try lubing the cable, might be getting dry or dirty maybe.

will do will any penetrating oil work? dont wana mess up my cable

A dry lubricant like garphite might be better especially if it is getting dirty. Used ot use on motorcycle cables.

you cant, there is a tab behind it preventing it from turning the other way. thus you would have to take the drum off. Unless there is a way to get in there without having to take the drum off.

prybar works wonders. when you put it all back together ensure that everything is back to the right spot as using a prybar will pull the shoes out a bit. unless someone knows a better way, this is how ive done it.

ok so heres a up date i didnt have to to get it apart but i did jack up the rear checked both wheels spun they did and i slowly started applying the parking break in small amounts and the passenger side locked down a pretty good amount before the drivers i had to get the brake set most of the way before the drivers side locked. then when i relaesed the park brake the passenger side is still hard to turn i checked the cables and they both move freely. what do you all gather from this?

seems to be binding in the mechanics of the drum brake. i would take the wheel and drum off, inspect and clean. check for proper operation with the drum off. manipulate the ebrake and look at it, then release and you will see whats binding.

you CAN spin the adjuster either direction, it's just harder to back it off than it is to tighten. I "think" that if you place the screwdriver in the slot (handle down, tip up) and rotate the inner part of the adjuster-wheel down, that loosens the brakes.. Basically, turning the wheel one way is easy, turning it the other way is hard. the 'hard' way, is loosening the brakes.You can get graphite lube (for the cables) at a bicycle store, as well.

It isn't easy, mind you, but it can be done. I've even had to do it for my rear disc rotor removal (the park brake resides inside the rotor hub hat.)

Just got done with this problem on my truck the cable had froze up completely and only 1 brake was working. But cables are really cheap to replace through RockAuto.Com. I paid all of $22 bucks for my passenger side cable. It might be worth looking into replacement of the cables than wondering if the cable going to last... Just checked on RockAuto.Com and yours are ranging from $12 bucks to $25 bucks.
