Failed inspection today due to left hub bearing. I've been looking at RA.com and other sites, but can't seem to find a listing for a 4whl abs hub... Are they not abs-specific, like the 2001 was?

It's definitely 4W-ABS..

That's always my FIRST place I go to.. The problem is, I don't see any separation between ABS and NON ABS front hub assemblies, except for ONE of them. I'm trying to determine if the ABS sensor is housed in the knuckle, rather than the hub.. I guess I'll crawl under it when it stops raining..

When i changed my unit bearings I didn't have to do anything with the ABS, and I have ABS. I'm pretty positive that the sensor is somewhere else. All you do is press the studs out of the rotor, change the unit bearing and press the new studs in. And i would get new studs. Might as well.

thanks, alby.my '96 only had RWAL brakes. Does yours have 4WAL? I'd be surprised if it does.

You know....I'm not sure. And I thought you were talking about your front hubs. My bad lol.

I AM talking about my front hubs

Haha oh well then I take it back. All I know is I have ABS and it had nothing to do with my hubs. I didn't have any sensors to deal with or anything. I think you're right though about the ABS stuff being in the rear cause I've never come across it. But I'm gonna look into it now that I'm thinking about it. I'm not even sure if it's still working ha.

Dammit... I forgot to get under the truck this weekend to check what type of hub bearings I need..I was reminded this morning, when backing into my parking spot at work, the wheel bearing began to sound like raw rice kernels between steel rollers... :banghead:

So from reading through this thread I've found myself confused over this ABS thing :ahhh:. When I bought my hub assembly I never got a Non ABS hub assembly or hub assembly w/ABS option. Its just one big bearing/hub assembly with no sensors or wires on it. But doing some research I can only find hub assemblies with an ABS sensor wire starting from 98 and newer trucks. My truck has ABS like I said before but I think it's rear wheal ABS only, which in my case would explain why I didn't run into it. So if Im not mistaken you shouldn't even have to deal with your ABS at all, but I could be wrong. All I did was go to O'reily's and they had the unit bearing assemblies in stock. Probably not the highest quality I could have gotten but oh well. Maybe some day when I have 2 grand to spare I can get the Manual hub conversion kit.:hyper:

huh! I stand corrected. Well Im of no use to you then lol. At least I can see what yours looks like and now I know.

LOL yeah it's weird. I wonder if the abs ring is on the axle or the hub. From the Galaxy S3

Rogan,It looks like your tone ring is NOT part of the hub bearing. It is separate. On the later trucks like mine, the tone ring is physically INSIDE the bearing assembly. So this may be why you are having trouble finding a PN that has an ABS designation.Ohh and just a side note guys. Our trucks were available in three levels of ABS.1 No abs. There was no ABS at all.2 2 "wheel" or RW ABS. This abs only applied to the rear axle. While it was considered a " 2 wheel" it actually only looked at the rear pinion/ring gear. Basically this helped in rain/low traction situation with an empty bed, as a the weight transfer to the front would allow the rear to lock up This system would reduce that propensity.3 4 wheel ABS. again a misnomer while the fronts are looked at individually, the rear are handled as a pair. (this is really a 3-channel abs.) Insurance and most people consider it 4WABS (4 wheel anti lock brakes)HTH Hag

Thanks Hag. I wasn't sure, so that gives me hope (and options for less expensive hub assemblies) :-)From the Galaxy S3
