Unfortunately I found this code today while doing my normal checkup on my truck. I have a fuel pressure gauge in the mail right now and should be here middle of the week. And I am installing a fass 150 GPh pump hopefully tomm afternoon if all goes well.Could the wiring on top of the vp44 be shorted and throwing the code? Take it out and look at the wiring? I'm pretty good at saudering is this a job I can do if I see the problem or is there another quicker way to test the IP? Im new to this forum all advice is greatly appreciated thanks ahead of time!

The only thing the 1693 code is telling you is that you have another code. It is called a companion code. What ever tool you used to get the codes did not get answers from both computers. The good news is that right now the VP is ok. The bad news is that you still have a code and then you will find out what your problem is. Good luck! Report back the results.

I will for sure... The other code has been there since I bought the truck it is P0234 which is turbo over boost condition. I called a local mechanic and he said it was bc I took the boot going from my air filter to the turbo off and let the truck idle with the boot off. But I hardly believe it has something to do with my p1693 code... Of course I have been wrong before. i have no noticeable drive able conditions that point toward a major problem I have noticed since bought the truck that I'm having to turn my motor over a couple more turns before it hits and cranks up... Maybe that will help I can't wait till the gauge gets here I feel crippled without it

^^X2. And the 1693 simply means there is a companion code detected so if the overboost was the only other code then you shouldnt have any problems with your vp especially if theres no driveability issues. If you clear the codes does the overboost code come back?

could that be my random surge problem? how does it defuel it self and guys that have bigger turbos and push 100+ psi what do they do so it doesn't defuel itself. my waste gate is rusted shut i cleaned it twice but takes about half a year and it's stiks shut again. but i don't have any codes, don't mean to steel this thread:think:

Surge problems are typically fuel related.

Are you running a stock turbo? I hope not... 35 PSI should be Max for Hx35 and about 30 PSI for a HY35.

Thank you Moparman, this is the second time you've saved me from investing a large some of $$$, and you've also informed me of the investments i am currently needing to make. It will be a couple of days before i am able to invest in a boost fooler... on the several web sites i've looked at they have discontinued to sell the boost foolers i'll have to keep searching. The codes did come back within a matter of minutes after i deleted them. I'm going to look into my waste gate problem and see if i can "free it up" not sure. if not i'll be looking at other waste gate options. Thanks for your help and concern JR.

Surge problems are typically fuel related. Are you running a stock turbo? I hope not... 35 PSI should be Max for Hx35 and about 30 PSI for a HY35.

it says hx35 on it, i have 2002 6spd HO, it doesn't get there all the time but up hills with a heavy load and qwad turned up a little gets to 30-35 almost instant and sometimes gets over 40 and i have seen it at 45-46 but then again the only guage i have is the monitor for qwadzila, it's probably not accurate.

2002 Cummins started to die at low rpms for a few minutes then it would subside and run fine. It did this for a few months without any codes but had limp mode symptoms. I put an edge with attitude on and noticed fuel psi was 2-4 psi wot and 9 at idle. I replaced lift pump with fass and truck operates at 18 psi all the time. The edge with attitude would never work as a programmer because edge said my map sensor was bad. I attempted to clean terminals on map and retry to program and this put the truck in limp mode. I had to unplug batteries To drain ecm to get it out of limp mode. This worked for some time, I drove the truck for a few months before it went into the state it is in now. now my truck is pushing all of the videos listed above. I’ve replaced the map sensor and I’ve tested voltage in the wires going to map. I’m getting 4.9 on map now. I noticed when my truck is running I’m getting 14.5 volts on driver batt and 13.4 on passenger battery. This is an 02 auto Cummins. I’m wondering if my wastegate is the issue or if I have a fried ecm. Any advice would be great. Also I’ve tried clearing codes and removing edge with attitude completely but codes do not go away. Also, the truck idles fine and sounds perfect when throttle is depressed. 

First off it sounds like you have some electrical issues to deal. Get your batteries checked out first. Clean all the connections, theynshould read the same while the engine running. The 1690 code has nothing to do with the waste gate, it is your cam sensor. That sensor, if failing, can cause drivabilty issues alone. I see also you are getting both low and high volt codes, this could be the ECM. The 216 is usually the end of the VP also

 

But as I mentioned first, you most likely have some electrical issues that should be adressed first before throwing expensive parts at the truck. Batteries could be shot or maybe the alternator. Clean up all of those connections and the connections on the other ends of the cables also. There sre slso alot grounds to deal with. The cables might even shot. I am not the electrical genius here by any means but some one more learned will come along and help.

 

If you will go to the articles section under 2nd gen 24v and click on OBDII error codes there is a list of the trouble codes. Dis connecting the batteries does do anything to the ECM. The memory is stored there and part of the ECM. It was just coincidence with the other issues you are seeing.

thanks for for the advice. If the VP was gone would it still start up and idle normal. The truck will also rev over 2500 rpm no problem  but when put in gear it will not go over 2000 rpm. My battery cables do look bad, they are stiff as hell. I’m going to take out the wire harness and see what I can trace down then replace cables and batteries. Any suggestions on where to purchase new battery cables?

 

Hard to say on the pump, maye run maybe not. It is a mechanical failure in the timing piston. But you have enough electrical codes  to make me think it could be ok. You want know untill you get your electrical issues squared away. At least I would not replace it until then. Its 1000 bucks in the box. 

 

 Get the batteries checked. If one is bad replace them both. The alternator can be contributing to this also with too much stray AC voltage. There is a test you can do with a good volt meter for AC voltage. Look in the articles section to find the article. I cant link it on this tablet for some reason.

 

As far as battery cables go I made my own after seeing the prices people wanted for good cables. Just a matter of what you are comfortable doing or spending. Just dont cheap out on pre made ones.
