  1. The NV4500 isn't too bad but it's a pain on the yard/driveway. I think I might buy a piece of plywood so the jack will roll around on the ground easier. Now if it was a 5600 I would be a little more nervous... those things are beast!
  2. Yeah that's what I'm gearing up to do is rebuild it. I cleaned the garage up yesterday so I have some room in there. Now I've got to get it pulled out, which is going to be fun in the driveway or yard!
  3. Yeah but only 18k.... I think I'll stay away from them!! Well my truck, that would be twice the tranny I need. If it was a dually I might think about it but I'm sure it isn't as fast as the 5 speed either. I don't sled pull or race (not too often) but I don't want it breaking either!
  4. Yeah right now the FSO swap is a little too much. It's a tough choice b/c of cost between Quad4x4 and the other places. Quad does make a good case with their shaft and with their USA parts and genuine NV parts. But they are also about twice (if not 3x) the price of the other places I've seen like Standard Transmissions or the place mentioned above. Just not sure if it would be worth the extra expense or not, or if I can even afford the most expensive ways...
  5. That's true, you'd think they would want to build high quality transmissions for doing what they do. The other option would be to rebuild it myself, just worried I might need a press or other speciality tools. I don't remember needing anything special back when I worked at the last shop when I helped rebuild them. But we had a press there and I don't...
  6. Cool thanks for the second link. I've been checking out Quad for a while and even bought a download repair manual from them. The other place I haven't seen!:thumb1:Wonder if the Torque King shaft is any better than the fully splined shaft the other place carries or even like what Haisley uses?
  7. That's mostly what I was curious about. I've heard it so many different ways, guys swapping one for the other and all. I've heard some guys say the 4500 can be built stronger than the 5600 with the right parts?
  8. Hey guys,Well yesterday my NV4500 decided to lose 3rd/4th gear. Now I'm trying to decide on what to do.... I've seen that ATS and Haisley Machine both sell a NV4500 and I know I can buy the parts to fix mine. But my problem is I'm trying to decide what the best bang for the buck would be.... Would I be better off with a NV5600 or stick with the NV4500? The FSO-6404a swap is pretty cool but I'm not sure about trying to source all the parts right now. Any opinions on the ATS or Haisley trans or any other places and parts outlets?:shrug:I know I make well over what the NV4500 is rated for and I'd like not to have breakage down the road even though I don't generally drive that hard. Just seems to be a lot of controversy over which transmission is best/ worth putting money into....:shrug:Thanks,Winslow
  9. Hey gang,I have a quick question about the 1st gen water pumps. I had a guy today tell me that some the 1st gens had a funky (for lack of a better term) water pump where it had a bunch of bolts that you had to remove and it was a real pain? Something like the inlet was way at the bottom of the engine or something... Is that true or was he just confused?:shrug:I always thought all Cummins just had the simple 2 bolt water pump?:shrug:Thanks,Winslow
  10. Good to hear you got it fixed!
  11. Do you have a fuel gauge and/or aftermarket lift pump? It kinda sounds like a dead VP or a dead APPS sensor. Probably a dead VP from a dead lift pump which starved the VP-44 (injection pump) of fuel. That is the biggest weakness on these trucks. Get yourself a fuel pressure gauge and see what it is. If zero then plan on a VP-44 and a new lift pump. Don't go stock on the LP, go with a Raptor, Airdog, or full FASS (not DDRP). I don't think your speed sensor is your problem. That is just the ABS sensor.
  12. Or just a new mechanical gauge?
  13. Yeah the Cummins can last forever but the Dodge part is a different story..... But I used some WD-40 on the door and it seemed to help. Maybe not prefect but a lot better. When I get time I'll dig into it further and see what I find out!!
  14. Mine is plumbed with -4 AN line so I'm not too worried about it.
  15. Just tell the wife that you would be helping yourself, her, and an American college student's business!!!! But in all seriousness, it sounds like it is okay, I'm just wondering why it isn't kicking when you start it up in the driveway... Wonder if it has something to do with that remote start. You might try going out and starting it the old fashion way and see what it does.
  16. Yeah I try to oil everything up when I do oil changes and such. Hopefully that's all it needs is a little lube but as many times as I open that door, it doesn't surprise me that it is acting up. Plus with the weather! Well if it turns out I need to dig deeper, I'll keep that in mind thanks!
  17. I'll try that. It's kinda like there is a cable inside and it's stretched or something. I have to pull on the handle a lot harder then I used to.... I'll trying cleaning and lubricating, then go from there!
  18. Which is really handy on old engines where you want to strip to bare metal.
  19. Yeah mine is plugged in inside the garage then the cord runs out to the driveway to the truck.
  20. Yeah everyday, about a dozen times at least. I put my back pack in the back seat along with my lunch box so let me see.... Once in the morning before I leave, once when I get to class, once to put my bag back in to move the truck, once again at the top of the hill, once again to get my lunch, once to put it back, once again to put my bag in there to go home, once again at the house....SO... At the very least, 8 times a day but probably more than that depending on the day! I'll try that, couldn't hurt that's for sure.
  21. I've been running the needle valve for about 1 1/2 years and over 30,000 miles without any problems other than once when I bumped it open a hair more so my gauge shook until I realized what has happened. No problems other than that and only cost like $5.
  22. Yo Mopar fans,My back door on the driver's side has began to get harder to open. The latch doesn't seem to release the door right... Any tips?:shrug:Thanks,Winslow
  23. Here is a picture I found of mine:
