Having an RV is almost a needed item now a days.....
Whats really disturbing is the high number of seemingly educated American people who fail to understand that the Constitution was a well written document created by a few Godly men who sacrificed their lives and reputations in order to secure the rights and freedoms of the American people by protecting them from a rogue and militant government. Take the time to read it and you'll see that its more about what the Gov "cant" do than what we "can" do..... And I agree about digging out those history books because learning history is critical to our up and coming generations. You cant know where you're going if you dont know where you've been. But its become blatantly obvious that the goal is to no longer teach kids what truly happened but instead wipe the historical slate clean from the "old dead white guys" of America. The framers of Common Core have even admitted that scary fact..... So public schools are no longer about accurate history and colleges have become so distorted that you're lucky if you graduate without being complete brainwashed and hating everything America. A current example of whats going on is.....you all should have already heard about the removal of Andrew Jackson off the $20 bill and replaced by Harriet Tubman. Why is this important to us? Well its not because it feels good and is the epitome of political correctness but rather that our leaders are re-writing history by defacing currency and committing government tyranny.....right in front of our faces. And.....the socialists in this country think its a great move as they rally around singing kumbaya from their achievement. Yet if they truly wanted to honor this woman for what she stood for then they would have made another form of currency like they did for the activist Susan B Anthony dollar coin. It may not be a widely popular form of money but it is used and people collect them too.....

I just find it ironically odd how all these poor "violence provoked" rioters are all parading around with similar high quality Trump hating T-shirts holding professionally printed protesting signs..... What happened to colored pens, Sharpies, and misspellings on poster board? If I wasn't such a mindless drone accepting everything I see plastered across mainstream media.....I may just take a wild guess in assuming that these seemingly haters of capitalism and free enterprise are financially supported by some large secret organization intent on using the public stupidity against ourselves. Just a theory of course.....

Having an RV is almost a needed item now a days.....
Dont get me wrong ya bunch of haters.....so if I may explain myself. 600 miles means at least 12 hours there and 12 hours back. Thats approximately $300+ in fuel, food, and time off. And since I'm self employed that means at least a few days without the all too critical paycheck too. I can see the dollars racking up against me fast.....and I have a family who relies on such monetary items for inconsequential things like food and clothing. Our vacations are limited and trying to explain that this one will be spent with forum buddies probably wouldn't receive much warm praise. So yeah maybe I dont go many places these days.....but I dont just drive a 2nd gen only because they're the epitome a diesel pickup truck. How about I just post a picture of my smiling mug and you all just imagine how much fun it would be with me there.

Whats the definition of irony? Here's a few examples..... Being called a racist because you feel that reverse racism is racist. Try to liberate ourselves from laws that grant our freedom to be liberated. Speaking out against the country which gives you the right to speak out against it. Every homosexual person is a result of two heterosexual people. Not using DNA to determine whats male or female but use DNA as evidence in a court of law to identify a person. The list goes on and on as the world becomes more and more topsy turvy.

NV4500 finally died...
Its only my opinion based on the crap replacement parts I've heard are available for this transmission, but if everything looks good other than that syncro, I might consider pulling it apart just enough to replace that one syncro and put it back together. Sounds crazy but if everything specs out then why pay money to fill it full of parts inferior to what you already have? If I could find some quality bearings then I'd consider them though.....

RV Battery Charging From Trucks Alternator
I hope to getting some portable solar panels for my RV trailer soon. But ya know how that goes..... Soon can mean never get around to it.

RV Battery Charging From Trucks Alternator
AH64ID, what I had happen was while one time towing in some hot weather up the mountain I had the throttle act up almost like the dead pedal experience.....but not the same. My only presumption after trying to figure out what happened was that because I was allowing the trucks charging system to remain connected to two house batteries which were in very very low charge condition, and because the Dodge wiring harness doesn't come equipped with any type of charge preference isolator, the alternator was probably working some serious overtime and generating a less than desirable sine wave of AC voltage out to all the neighboring electronics. Thus freaking out my APPS..... I'm sure it didnt help that it was around 95*, truck engine was toasty, and my RPM's in the 2400 range either. I found this topic to be quite common on RV forums whereby people often discuss the ideas and experiences behind the need for an isolator or split charge relay between the tow vehicle and the trailer. For various reasons too..... So in point, I no longer tow with the house batteries in less than perfect charge condition, or if I have to then I'll disconnect them from the loop altogether.

The wiring isnt bad. The hardest part was running all the way back from the differential, mating up with the transmission wire and then feeding both of them up to the gauge. Thats a long distance to reach through and around stuff and properly secure. To point out, I also added quick connectors not far from both sensors so that I could unplug them and watch which needle stopped reading temps. This is how I initially identified which needle was reading which component too, and if I have a reason to take something apart I just disconnect the fitting instead of cutting and re-splicing wires. But I have to ask..... Hey Mike, hows it going? I cant imagine its taken you this long to pull that tranny out and see whats going on? The curiosity is up as I'm hoping the issue is merely related to the shift tower.

When I was trying to figure out where I was going to stick one more gauge I thought about the doing what you're thinking and using a toggle switch. Sounded like a good idea except I was going to do either of two things..... Find myself constantly flipping a toggle switch back and forth making sure the temps were always in check, or eventually leave it alone just so everyone in the truck wouldnt ask me what I was doing. Then I kinda figured whats the point of having a gauge that I cant look at all the time. So I got the Westach dual temp gauge. By the way, Geno's version has no component specification but Westach does make them with identifying component names on the gauge. I got the Geno's version before I figured that out and have threatened to get the other one from Westach. But now I know what numbers go to what component so.....

NV4500 finally died...
Just to make it clear, I have no idea what the transmission temperatures were before the Fastcoolers and temp gauge installation. But I have read from other hotshot drivers over the years that their 5 speed would run around 225* to 275* while towing, and after installing Fastcoolers they averaged a 25*-50* reduction overall. I'm going to assume that they were towing in 5th gear too but I cant confirm since those guys have since moved on to newer trucks and/or are no longer part of the forums. Towing in 5th (OD in the 4500) generates a lot more heat unloaded or towing. My temperature readings from the transmission after the cooler/temp gauge install was around 150*-175* unloaded in 5th gear and around 190*-220* while towing in 4th gear. These readings were during the warmer summer weather and on the highway and sometimes climbing in altitude whereby the hottest temp would be after long hill climbs in warm weather and possibly having to downshift into 3rd gear too. Pointing out that I never tow heavy in 5th gear either. Strangely what I noticed was that the transmission temps almost mirrored the differential temps too..... I've since installed a Mag-Hytec which has changed those figures as well. Well after not being happy with the transmission temps while towing up hills I realized that the exhaust was very HOT and it had to be heating up the neighboring transmission. So I installed two 3 foot exhaust blankets back to back totaling 6 feet which now covered the hot radiant exhaust passing next to the transmission and transfer case. After the blankets the transmission temperatures dropped around 25*-40* overall. Now driving unloaded along the freeway in 5th gear my transmission runs about 140*-150* at the hottest, and when towing my trailer in 4th gear it will only get about to 160*-175* unless I'm pulling a steeper hill in 3rd gear whereby the peak temperature may reach 200* if the climb is long enough and the ambient temp is hot enough. That said, if I have the momentum and RPM's before starting the hill which will allow me to sustain 4th gear throughout the entire hill then the temperatures will hardly increase above that 175*. Clearly running in 1:1 direct drive removes a massive amount of stress. After installing my RV275's I noticed a nice gain in HP while actually allowed me to maintain 4th gear more often and the transmission runs cooler while towing. Hope that helps. As for oil temperatures and whats acceptable..... After having quite a few technical discussions with some large name oil company tech guys (leave the company names out in order to remove bias opinions here), they all told me about the same thing. ANY petroleum oil (which makes up pretty much everything available to the everyday consumer) will start to oxidize at around 180*F. Temperatures up to 225* was completely safe and some may even do just as well at 250*. But when you crest that figure the thermal breakdown and oxidation rate becomes immense and the oil begins loosing its ability to lubricate. Running a thicker viscosity is only in attempt to achieve a specific "running" temperature which is why its generally called for in more stressful applications. So running a thicker gear oil is not always best.....and running synthetic is not always best. Some actually said I "might" see a slight reduction in overall temperatures by around 10* is I used a 80-90 weight instead of the 140 weight. I have yet to try though and I'm not sure I ever will. A lot of what the oil has to go through will be determined by the size of the drivetrain components and the stock capacity. Which is why a Toyota calls for 140 and a class 8 differential calls for 90. And, why I installed my Mag-Hytec on my differential and my Fastcoolers on my transmission. Both gave me added fluid capacity which is better for heat dissipation and lubrication durability.

Anywhere from 100* to 210* F depending on the the weather, terrain, speed, what gear I'm in, and what I'm towing. But in all honesty I did blanket the 6 feet of exhaust which passes directly by the transmission and transfer case which offered even more reduction in transmission heat. I've got it more detailed out if anyone cares.

NV4500 finally died...
I installed a temp gauge on my 4500 (and differential) a few years ago. Very interesting too..... As for parts, wherever you look Mike just try to get whatever OEM parts you can. I understand they're very hard to come by too but even Quad4x4 will tell you that most, if not all, parts they have for this transmission are made overseas. And those parts are nowhere near as strong as the OEM parts. Sad thats the only option.

No metal in the oil is a very good sign. A temperature gauge is a great idea. You can either use a 3/4" to 1/8" reducer at the fill plug or better yet get yourself some Fastcoolers when you put the new one in. Good heat dissipation and they come with 1/8" ports.

RV Battery Charging From Trucks Alternator
This thread got a little off track.....but still good info. As for charging the trailer house batteries off the truck, I wouldnt suggest it. A properly charged house battery will go undetected by the charging system but a weak house battery will place strain on the alternator. I had an odd experience once pulling my trailer somewhere with weak house batteries. Now I always make sure they're fully charged or I have them disconnected while towing.

Brake squeakssss
Have you pulled them apart? Sometimes its just something really simply like a cracked brake pad which will cause the pad to "sing" a little tune for ya every time the pressure is just right.....

Sorry Mike. I certainly hope its something simple and cheap.

Pyrometers install
I have a strange feeling your next thread will be something like "what aftermarket exhaust manifold to buy?"
-
Pyrometers install
It doesn't look bad. And the amount sticking in the exhaust path is determined by how deep the fitting is. And since I cant compare what the fitting length measured in relation to the thickness of the manifold, I cant say how much is sticking though. But it doesnt look like much.
-
Pyrometers install
The desired depth for taping is to have the threads cut just deep enough so that the fitting is held in place securely. This means there is no reason to tap all the way into the manifold so that when the fitting is installed tightly that its forced to hang down into the flow of exhaust. That will only cause more unnecessary impeding turbulence. Then the thermocouple must be positioned so that its sitting directly in the middle of the exhaust port and as far from the outside edges of the manifold as possible. Yes, it too will interfere with exhaust flow but not much and its something you cant get around since its kinda necessary for the pyrometers function.....
