NV450 5speed blew at 184k miles.
Were you able to get the truck up high enough to sit or were y’all on your backs?. I’m sure they’re heavy. That one we did in that square body yrs ago was real heavy

Did you have your pick up on a lift . Did you have a good transmission jack? I helped a buddy do a clutch years ago on a square body Chevrolet. ( my only real transmission experience) What a s@#$show that was😂. Laying in the dirt underneath the truck manually bench pressing the tranny into the pilot bearing

5th gear
I value your opinion and I appreciate your time. Hope you don’t mind if I continue to pick your mind for a bit. Had you done anything with 5th gear before it grenaded? How many miles on the tranny? Is the countershaft bearing another weak spot on these transmissions? Have you looked at a 5600 conversion? Did you rebuild your 4500? Believe it or not I am of the same opinion about knowing something was done right. I just hate throwing good money after bad. I want to start using this pickup to run back and forth to AZ and tow a medium sized fifth wheel and I abhor the idea of slinging fifth gear and running 1000 miles or better home in 4th gear.

5th gear
I’ve never physically been inside of one these, so bare with me please. If there is a failure won’t the gear and nut be out of there original position? This should allow plenty of shaft access for a cut off wheel? Thanks

I work offshore, so I’m not able to get all the info required at this time to fill out garage. I’ll update when I get home. Thanks

5th gear
The only thing I see it complicating later after a failure is taking it apart. The shaft is junk from day one, so when it comes time to take it apart, cut it in half with a cut off wheel remove the damaged section to complete disassembly. Am I missing something?

Curse of the 5th gear nut!
I’ve been kicking this around for a few months and from what I see the after market replacement nut packages don’t really hold up any better than original equipment. This is why i thought id weld the original nut instead of buying the aftermarket junk. I started a new thread on this instead of hijacking this one

5th gear
I know this topic has been beat to death. Sorry! I just bought a 2001 4 x 4 five speed with the NV 4500. At this time there has been no failure. My thinking is open up the back of the transmission verify torque and weld the nut to get some more life before an ultimate rebuild. Maybe that would be a waste of time and effort? TIA

Curse of the 5th gear nut!
I know the proper fix is rebuild with upgraded shaft, but I thought I’d be alright to weld it (gently) lol, get some more miles out of it , then when it ultimately failed pull it and do it right. I should just pull it now and do it? At this time it hasn’t been touched. No previous failure

Curse of the 5th gear nut!
I just bought this unmolested 01 4x4 ,5spd NV 4500. I was about ready to open it up , verify torque and tig weld a 1/4” at 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock. Maybe I shouldn’t bother?

Just got back in the Cummins program. I’ve owned a couple , years ago , but as pickups go sometimes, they weren’t around long enough to get very familiar. Just got a 2001 4x4 bone stock Quad Cab. Pretty excited about fixing this thing up and having a good dependable ride under me for many yrs. I’ve worked with diesels most of my life ,so I’m not totally ignorant. Thanks
