diesel pinging
Update for you.. I read on another site that if the MAP sensor is acting up that could cause pinging. So... I had an extra good one on another 5.9 I have and changed them out and it stopped the pinging!! Would you believe that? I guess if the MAP is bad is would not send the right signal to the ECU that controls the injection fire?? What ya think about that??

diesel pinging
Yes, the wife always says I can hear the grass grow and the leaves rustle, but never her!...I don't see a problem with that!!! - - - Updated - - - The only problem I have with this truck is that the O-ring is leaking bad between the power steering pump and the vacuum pump. Do you think maybe the vacuum leaking it would cause a loss in pressure and make the pinging sound?? Just guessing here out loud!!

diesel pinging
I dont think its due to high cetane in Florida and I know it's not gasoline in the tank. I read on one of the forums that pinging is a sign of a misfiring injector. I thought yall would know? I'll keep looking, I appreciate the comments though!!!

diesel pinging
My 2001 is pinging like an old gas motor that has cheap fuel. Is this a bad injector or something else?

Installed a FTE resonator
Its not quiet like a car muffler. You can still hear a rumble.

Installed a FTE resonator
Just thought I would let yall know that I installed a FTE resonator RM4430A on my 2001 3500 with 4" straight thru with 5"elbow to 8" miter cut stack and it is well worth the money!!!! I honestly thought I liked the sound without it, but traveling over 100 miles a day towing our company trailer the dreaded drone got to me. I can finally talk, hear the radio(without turning it way up!), and hear myself think!...lol By the way I am no sales person for them, but had to give them credit where credit is due.:thumbup2: __________________ 2001 Dodge duallie 24 valve with 110 injectors, tst power max/stacked smarty, 3 piece header, HX35, Banks high rise intake,AirDog 165, open 4 inch exhaust to 8' miter Black MBRPstack , upgraded transmission with heavier torque convertor, 4:30 gears

Smarty stacked with either MVP tuner or a Smarty??
I am just considering my options. For the amount some people are telling me just change my programmer to like a quadzilla adrenaline. Like I stated just looking for more lower end power., not a race truck. Does your smarty make really high egts?

Smarty stacked with either MVP tuner or a Smarty??
Ok guys here is another question to ponder. Which one would you add/stack with a TST power programmer. A Smarty or the MVP tuner? If Im not mistaken they both control timing and are better for low end torque, but unsure which would be better of the two. Im looking for more low end torque to help the TST. The power band doesnt kick in with the TST until later in the rpm band. Any thoughts? Anybody have this set up? I know people tell me to just by both, but lets get real.

truck is bucking bad pulling my trailor bad!
Under a load, towing my company trailor. I would se the readings like that when I was flooring it to pass someone. That is why i changed the system. I am waiting for my fuel pressure adapter to come in, but I doubt its the brand new AD 165. However you never know? I drove it around today and had no symtoms! This is a mystery for sure! Im losing faith in these Cummins really quick I hate to admit! It just gets the best of me when I see it sitting there not making me money.I really appreciatte any advise know matter what it is. Opinions count!!

truck is bucking bad pulling my trailor bad!
It started doing it before I changed the fass to the 165 Airdog. That was why I changed it. I figured maybe the pum being 8 years old it waas getting weak because the pressure at wot was at 8-9. --- Update to the previous post... What was wrong with yours

truck is bucking bad pulling my trailor bad!
I eplaced the fuel system already. It only happens when i put a load on the truck or if i turn my TST progammer on.

truck is bucking bad pulling my trailor bad!
I'm sitting on the side of the road waiting for somebody to fold me meantime I'll tell you my symptoms The truck started bucking a few days ago so i shut off my tst and it seemed to help. Now coming home today from work doing 70 on the highway the truck started bucking? Worse when i went up hill. Fuel pressure is good yo the pump engine is not hot, checked the tranny its good. I dont know? Any suggestions? Could the vp be getting weak? No codes either? --- Update to the previous post... we are at the trailer and I drove it home. I don't get it something's wrong though?? It didn't even buck or nothing?? Anybody got any ideas

Nothing wrong with any piston! Except #1 oil deposit

oil out the dipstick??
I have had it since i drove it off the show room floor in 2001. I believe it has 325,000 on it, but dont qoute me I forgot! The BD injectors have been in it since 2003. I personally cleaned them and had them inspected before re-installing them in the new motor i have in the truck now. The diesel shop they were in great shape. The motor I installed is running great, I have no complaints. It had under 200,000 miles on it. Thats what Im doing to is basically spitballing ideas, as well as listening to others advise. Trust me I appreciate them. This is why my next step will be to remove the valve springs and check guides and seats, like someone suggested. I did notice that some of the head bolts were not that tight. I think the shop I took it to screwed me on replacing the head gasket. Also I found a couple of the, what I call valve bridges, going from the valve springs to the rocker arms were installed backwards. The indentation on them should be all on the outside not the inside. I will have to take a pic to actually show you what I mean.

oil out the dipstick??
Wild and Free Yes there is crosshatching in all 2 thru 6. They look great. I have not turned the motor over, due to time, on number 1 yet. So, it hard to say on that cylinder for sure. As for the poor oil, excessive idle time, or poor air filter. I, again assure you these are not the case! I am anal on maintaining my trucks. I personally change the oil and filters at 6,000 miles. Or if the filter looks dirty I change that more. As I go along I will send more pics. I got another gentleman that is wanting me to ake the valve springs out and check the valve guides and seats first. I might do that first then the piston removal.

oil out the dipstick??
Ok for you that are still with me and interested here are some pics of the head off. I did not have any burnt pistons! The cylinder walls look good except #1, as far as I can see of it, without turning the motor over. Sorry it got too late and had to get up at 4:00 a.m. for work.

oil out the dipstick??
1)Well this therory is wrong for this situation seeing , like stated before, Im the one keeping up the routine maintenance and does it properly when needed. 2)This one doesnt even apply also seeing I do have years of experience driving diesels and know the proper ways to operate them. 3)This is an assumption that just because I stated that the truck is used for my company doesnt mean I allow people to drive it. I DO NOT allow anyone to drive it except myself! Refer to answer 2! 4)Just the mile s alone should tell you that it has been maintained! 5)Just because some people choose to have a ower enhancer doesnt mean that they will have " cylinder wash down". I can assure you that I have never had my TST over 5 setting non-towing and stock mode 1 for towing!

oil out the dipstick??
Yes, for eight miles. Now its eunning like it has no power and giving me a 0216 code I have my other new IP off the motor i took out so, i guess i will be swapping them out --- Update to the previous post... Im no young kid beating up my truck! Anybody that knows me will testify that I maintain my truck well, as if it was my kid. So you really have no right saying how I treat my vehicles if you dont know me without true facts! The results on my first motor? I did not know you could see threw metal? I never tore it apart yet. Your jist assuming, which Im sure you know how thar works. --- Update to the previous post... Trust me it killing me to really truthfully know! However; I have to get the truck up and running for my company to use. If everything goes good I should be taking it apart on Sunday. Thanks for the concern!

oil out the dipstick??
First of all I never said i was using either engines for a at high reving motor like my 540! You should ne able to take amy motor amd rev them up in park to see if your motor is running right. I only said i was reving it up to ahigher rpm to see, like 2000 rpms Next time i guess i will have to be more specific and watch how i say things!
-
oil out the dipstick??
Finally got the motor running Sunday. The thing runs and idles good, but I got one small question. Does this 5.9 have a rev eliminator in it? Reason I am asking is because when I rev it way up in park it seems to stumble a little at a high RPM. I rechecked the connectors on it, but nothing changed. The other motor was doing the same thing before I changed it, so I know its not just this motor. Maybe it is one of the many sensors on the motor? She is not throwing any codes though.

injector shims
ISX, Thank You!! The video was so good even the wife made me show her, seeing she owns a cummins too. We found that quite interesting and informative!! --- Update to the previous post... ISX, one more thing what is the ft/lbs needed to reassemble the injector? I think Mopar1973 said 30 ft/lbs, but Im unsure.
-
injector shims
John, 4 out of 5 injectors had 1 shim in them, while the remainder 2 had 2 shims ( Or washers to me) stacked one on top of the other. It seemed, by my naked eye, that the shims were almost the same in thickness. One of the single shim ones looking like it might be off by a hair. I was just wondering what they(the Shims) do? I dont understand what "pop" means actually? Im taking it the way you all are telling me is that it is the fuel delivery? Thanks for your help in understanding this. Also do you know what the ft/lbs it takes to reassemble them? I think its 32ft/lbs.

injector shims
I have 2injectors with 2 shims in one. Im talking about the small washer looking part under the spring. I am assuming the two stacked together in these injectorss are equal in diameter in the other injectors, correct?
