Pure Flow Raptor problems
Thanks for the replies.DW. First off there is no draw straw on this one, its a stock tank and pickup. Vulcan knew that and sold me the fittings to plug into the stock tank fitting on top of the tank. Fuel level is above 1/2 tank so level should not be a problem. Truck was running perfectly with the stock LP on it, just did this to get the pressure a bit higher and preserve the VP-44. Its preserving it all right... the truck will barely start now and the VP will be in perfect condition sitting in the driveway. GW, Second, the fuel pressure output is off of the banjo fitting on the VP=44. Its from a Edge Attitude sending unit. With the stock LP there was never any of this issue, but the pressure was close enough to 10 psi to get me worried. Used thread sealant on the AN fittings but none on the plug in fitting on the fuel tank attachment. We did use the connection off of the stock pump as noted in the AD installation guide. It was a real bear to get to and plug into but its done.Yes that frigging warranty paperwork was sent in a couple of days ago. That policy is pure BS as I bought the pump from Vulcan on the 8th of August and the receipt is dated as such, then they forgot to ship the bio-diesel hose with it so I could not install the pump. Hose arrived well after the pump on 24 August then I headed overseas to work for over a month. I did not even open up the Pure Flow box before leaving so there was no way of knowing that I was supposed to send the paperwork in within 30 days. Am really pissed at this BS way of doing things.Sent them a letter with the warranty paperwork saying that if they were not going to give me the unlimited warranty as I was told by Vulcan to advise me by certified letter so I could return the pump and kit to Vulcan. American Express will reverse the charges if they want to play this game. Did I say that I am really, really, really pissed off at this BS way of hiding the paperwork on the bottom of the box under the pump then putting a time limit on it? Now, just went out and did some more adjustments on the pump. Seemed to remember that there was a 14 psi divert valve on the system so that if the fuel pressure went above that pressure that any excess fuel would be returned to the tank. OK, lets dial the fuel pressure down below 14 psi so that if this valve is sticking or stuck that this might help. Not a bit of help and in fact the engine ran worse with the lower fuel pressure. Right now its set at 12 psi and when I drove it around the block it went as low as 4 psi and the engine almost died. Then looked below the truck once I was back and found the pump had a drip or three of diesel fuel from the bottom. It does not seem to be from the adjustment screw but from the large aluminum plate on the bottom. Am really, really not impressed with Air Dog at this moment. As well Vulcan emailed me back saying that they had received my emails and would be calling me. So far no calls, nor reply emails on what they think that this might be nor how to fix it. All of this after I was talked out of buying a FASS direct replacement pump as "they are not reliable" right now... Well kids, the Air Dog is poster child on my truck for this title right now.Thx,Joe

Air Dog 100 using stock fuel cannister/Heater
John,If you are running 18 psi at idle, how much do you drop at WOT or while driving? Am having trouble with a newly installed AD100 and wondering what "normal" is on this system. I did not replace anything upstream of the filter housing, so its stock.Thx,Joe

Scan Gauge showed up....
I have an early model Scangauge and love it. May upgrade to the newer one but frankly for the price (it was free) its hard to beat.

Pure Flow Raptor problems
EDIT, I thought I had a AD-100 when in fact I have a Raptor pump unit. Believe its pretty much the same except without the filters. Have changed the thread title to reflect this. ~~~~Installed an Air Dog 100 on my truck last weekend and while its running, its not running right. Am not at all experienced with diesels (am a airplane mechanic) so wanted to post here to see if there is something that I have missed. The pump "seems" to be working fine. I say seems as three times now its "hiccup'ed" on me. Driving normally (not WOT) at about 40 mph or so the fuel pressure dropped from normal levels to 7-8 psi, activating the alarm on my Edge Attitude display. No difference in the way it drove, just lost almost all the fuel pressure. Ok, so I just increased the pressure a bit on the pump (was steady at 14 psi out of the box) to about 20. Well when I did this the damm truck would not start. Have now dropped it back to 16-17 or so and hope that it will start and not do this. I have checked the wiring and its all fine, so do not know what in the world is going on here but am concerned that the pump or motor is going South.A follow up. Adjusted the pressure down to about 17 yesterday trying to get the "hard to start" issue taken care of. Had heard that fuel pressures around 20 or so can make the truck hard to start.Just drove the truck to the store and back. Its getting worse and worse than it ever was. With the stock LP the pressure would stay at 10-12 psi most of the time. At WOT it would sometimes go to 7-8 psi, so I felt that it was time to be replaced to save the VP-44. As well it would ALWAYS start on the first hit of the starter, always. The new AirDog pump on the drive today started off fair, with its taking a bit of cranking to start. Pressure came right up to 16 psi. Drove to the market, about 2.5 miles. Along the way driving at a steady 40 mph the pressure started fluctuating, from 16 down to 7 psi, at an even throttle setting. Came out of the market and it took over 5 minutes of cranking to get the puppy started. Pressure was at 16 at first then dropped down to 10 or so during cranking. The stock LP never did this. Finally got it started and went to the post office. Inside 3 minutes and same thing but got it started faster by moving the throttle back and forth. Once it started the pressure started doing the same thing, going up and down from 16 to 7 psi, and this was at idle under no load. Before you ask, voltage was a steady 13.7. Nothing at all has been changed on the truck other than the AD-100 pump.Hope someone has some ideas on this!Thx,Joe

Installed the Edge w/Attitude today
Bringing back an old thread. Finally did what Mike recommended and installed an AirDog 100 this weekend. Boy, what a difference in the way the truck drives!Stock it was borderline with the pressures from the LP anywhere from 10-12 at idle but if I kicked it in the rear it went down... way down. The LP pump was working but barely. Now I have 14 psi all the time but it needs adjustment higher as I can see it go as far down as 8 psi at WOT. Will knock it up to around 20 or so and that way have some margin. Went with the stock kit and bio-diesel hose as recommended by the seller. Will not name the seller here as they were very helpful but also talked me out of the FASS geared replacement LP. Said in the last week that they had warrantied 5 of them so they were not recommending them until FASS got them reliable. Was very happy with their honesty and am very happy with the AD-100!Performance is better (much better) and fuel mileage appears to be at least 1-2 mpg better, even in town. Cannot wait to get it on the highway.Joe

New Mileage Record!!!
My 2002 has about 110,000 miles and gets 23-25 mph in mixed city and highway driving. Good friend of mine has several F250's and he was simply drooling over the mileage readouts in my Cummings. Seems that the best that he can get is 17-18 mpg in his truck so 50 mpg is pure dreaming.FT

Installed the Edge w/Attitude today
Well guys, got the new Edge back and it works excellent. Latest software, new harness and so on, FOR FREE! Hard to beat customer service like this, so they have made a new customer.Next thing to go is that I am still seeing low LP pump pressures so its time to change it out before I shell the VP44. Pressures are fine unless I put my foot in it, then they go down to 8 psi or so, and thats not helping the VP so its time to upgrade. Normal running is 10-11 psi but dammit, 10 psi is the bottom limit and thats not going to work. Have been looking at the FASS direct replacement geared pump. Its about $240 or so and about half or a bit more than half cost of the full blown FASS system. I simply cannot hack $600 right now but if I do not change it will cost me $1200, so something has to be done. Was thinking that if I put the new direct replacement geared pump and possibly a big line kit, that it would keep the LP pressures "in the green" and keep the VP happy. I am not planning on hot rodding the truck and even though the Edge is on it now, still have not hooked up the VP wire nor the exhaust temp thermocouple yet. Important for me is the LP pressure reading out of the Edge. Besides the truck is sitting right now and I am out on the road on a 20 day trip. Thx for the help!FT

Heating and A/C system problems
Mrclean,Thanks for the info. So your A/C compressor runs in every other position than floor? Thats not right either. It should run in the two left positions on the A/C or Vent switch and thats it. This means that when you have it on vent and air coming direct to the upper vents, but with heat selected on the temp control, that the A/C compressor is running. My only real heartburn other than that you do not need the compressor running for warm air is that its also costing us fuel mileage. Will look at the other areas on the truck later on today and see what I find. Thx,FT

Heating and A/C system problems
Mike,Thanks and any idea where to start looking? I havent the faintest where the connectors or relays are on this system.Thx,FT

Heating and A/C system problems
I have a 2002 2500. Owned it for 3-4 months and love the truck.Early on realized that while most everything works great on the truck, the heating and A/C system had problems.Would turn the temp control knob from full cold to mid point on the scale to get some heat and nothing happened. I had to turn the knob full hot, then wait a bit then it would get "full hot." Turn the knob anywhere other than full hot and nothing happened. Turn it full cold and it finally would get cool again. Anywhere in the middle range and nothing happened.Only help I can give is that after moving the temp control knob after a few minutes I can hear a flap on the passenger side of the under-dash area close (its loud enough to hear) then the temp changes. Its now getting warm down here in Arizona so I turned the A/C on to check it and it works fine but going from the "max A/C" to the normal A/C position does nothing, and then going from the normal A/C to just vent air (A/C should be off) and the cold air continues. Stopped the truck and popped the hood and sure enough the A/C compressor is still engaged, so while the control is in the "vented air" position, the system has not gotten the signal to turn the compressor off. Am assuming that if I wait long enough that the compressor will shut off but this is not normal.Am assuming that there is a relay stuck or a computer controlling this that is not working right. Anyone have any ideas on this? Thx,FT

Installed the Edge w/Attitude today
Mike,Nice video and almost the same readings I am getting from my truck. Have cleared the codes and have driven twice with no codes popping up, so life is good. After talking with the guys at Edge really believe that the reason why this is happening is either an issue in the box or problem with one or two of the connectors in the wiring harness. Remember this was a used unit and not sure how gently the previous owner removed it from his truck. At least now it will return from Edge in good shape and we can start over again.Putting the Edge in the first time was a bit of a hassle (am NOT a diesel mechanic... yet!) so getting used to new stuff. Took about 90 minutes to put the harness in the first time. Now bet I could do it in 10 minutes now that I know where everything is and how to get to it, and the learning curve is coming down.

Installed the Edge w/Attitude today
I cannot tell much of a difference in the power but then was not looking for more power when I installed the unit. I did not add the wire to the VP-44 yet (ran out of time) so it defaulted to level 1 I believe. The Edge guys said that this alone is something like 40hp additional. For me the big deal was that it appears that I was getting about 2-3 mpg more than stock. Like I said, it was only a couple of days before it puked so this is not a scientific reading but the mpg readings did go back down after I pulled the unit out.FT

Installed the Edge w/Attitude today
Deleted the codes from the truck and it drives fine and no new codes, so all is well. So far am very happy with it even though it puked. Am missing the extra fuel mileage it was giving right now! :(FT

Installed the Edge w/Attitude today
Got the codes and they are:P1693P0238P0236Called Edge and they were somewhat baffled. The Attitude display is blank, but there is good (12.7) power at both fusebox connections, so I yanked everything out and it will be on the way to Utah this afternoon! They were saying that the codes shown usually reflect no input at one of the sensors, so am returning the wiring harness along with everything.Back to stock again!Thx,FT

Installed the Edge w/Attitude today
Well it was nice for a while!Drove the truck a couple of times and it worked fine. Then drove it a couple of times and the "Attitude display" did not power up when I started the truck.Had to pick up a friend at the airport last night and same thing, no power to the display. Once I restarted the engine the yellow "check engine" display came on and nothing on the Attitude display. :mad Guess its now back to check all of the wiring, fuses and call Edge. Hope I do not have to go to the dealer to get the "check engine" light reset!FT

Transfer Flow toolbox/fuel tank combo
Dave,Thanks and we are a bit lower out here in Arizona. Last I paid was $2.08 and just saw $197 at a Chevron station yesterday. Still not cheap but better than it was this time last year. Will go ahead and hook it up stock, was just wondering if anyone had a better idea.Thx,Joe (aka FT)

Transfer Flow toolbox/fuel tank combo
Mike,If you want to know the truth, I got a really good deal on it so could not say no. Had a 7mm mag that I had never fired (new in the box) that I just did not need and traded the guy straight across for the tank. He then sold it for $850 or so to a friend and everyone was happy. He was getting married and needed the funds for the honeymoon. Only heartburn is that the local place who removed it and was going to install it in my truck started to play games. The branch office removed it from the sellers truck and bolted it into mine, then the head office location then said that the price quoted to do the work was too low and started making difficult noises. They wanted $500 to remove it and reinstall it, (and remember this takes 45 minutes each way) and their smaller branch quoted us $300. We went to the smaller branch and split the price between the two of us,and as I said its bolted in my truck but none of the wiring or plumbing has been done.At least one really nice guy at the satellite branch printed out the installation instructions and gave me a copy. Think that for 45 minutes work I may just end up doing it myself and putting the money towards a FASS system!FT

Installed the Edge w/Attitude today
Thought that as long as I am seeing 10 psi or higher that its ok? A momentary dip below 10 with WOT is going to hurt it that much? Am using your "two stroke oil" when I refuel, so hope that I can keep this from shelling out the VP-44 for a while. As long as I keep my foot out of it and the LP pressure at 10 psi think that I can put this next mod off for a while? Options as I see it are to either go with an upgraded stock system or save my pennies and get a FASS or AirDog system. Am kinda put off of the AD systems as I do not want to be pulling the bed off to install things, so leaning towards the FASS. That said, am absolutely not going to "hot rod" the truck, just want it reliable and not strand me on the side of the road somewhere.Thx,TF

Transfer Flow toolbox/fuel tank combo
Anyone using the Transfer Flow toolbox/fuel tank combo? Made a deal with a gent here in town last week and now I have a 50 gallon unit sitting in the back of the truck.Have not hooked it up yet and playing with options.First option is to hook it up using their computer display and enjoy. It monitors the fuel level of the main tank then adds fuel as needed in 5 gallon slugs.Had also wondered about just using it as an Aux fuel tank and putting a "on/off" stitch and controlling the flow manually. Before I do this, wondered if anyone else on the board had done this and had any suggestions or tips.Thx,FT

Installed the Edge w/Attitude today
Just spent the afternoon installing most of the Edge w/Attitude on my 2002 Dodge. Most of it was pretty easy but getting to some of the sensor plugs was not real easy, and one of them was hidden under the LP pump.I did not hook up the sensors for the VP-44, transmission temp and EGT. Ran out of time to drill the exhaust manifold for the EGT and will do it later. I have a 6 speed manual tranny so not real worried about the transmission temps. As well I never tow anything (yet) so feel that the temps are fine. As for the VP-44 wire, want to drive it in the #1 setting for a while and see how it does. As I do not tow am not looking for lots more power and the wire to the VP is what gives you the extra power levels.Drove the truck and left it on the #1 power setting. Did not buy this rig for extra power but for the information that it give me like the LP fuel pressure and other engine reading that you do not get with the stock gauges. After the temps came up (very nice having a digital temp gauge) gave it a bit of boost and the gauge reads it just fine. Only got up to about 18 psi boost but on level pavement could not hold my foot into it very long either. The LP pressure was ok (not OK) and reads 10-12 most of the time. At WOT it does go down to 7-8 for a bit then recovers. Main reason for the post is, with my LP pump pressure where I feel is right on the bottom border of where it needs to be to keep the VP-44 properly lubed, anyone have any suggestions on how long I am safe driving it like this? Would like to get a FASS or other better pump/filter system but did not win the lotto last weekend, so still being a bit Scottish (otherwise known as thrifty) with my funds. Thanks, FT

Oil Analysis
Joe,This is for the engine, correct? Cannot see how silica (sand) would get into a gearbox, and its not unusual to see in an engine oil sample. You will usually see a lot more metals in a gearbox sample, like all the syncro's and such that wear everytime you shift. Not in higher concentrations but still there.Joe
