  1. I'm confused... visors or rear-view? Are we talking about the visor mounted comb-your-hair-before-your-date-gets-in? Are we talking about the rear view fer seeing cars behind us?Russ
  2. If I could remenber what vehicle I did it on, I could give you an era. The actual bulb sat into a knob with 2 flat sides. Easier to get out than back in again. I might even have some remnants in my parts bins? (Pack rat syndrome.) What does it take to pull an instrument cluster? I'm thinking I don't want to go there... but humor me. ---------- Post added at 01:57 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:03 AM ---------- I found the following: http://greensboring.com/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=9550 http://www.ehow.com/how_5828981_change-dashboard-lights-subaru-forester.html
  3. I'm sure I can't get another one with under 100k. I'm thinking of starting shopping wheels now & see if I can squirrel a set. Not many salvage yards around here but there must be some. I've heard of a lot of folks with wheel / leak corrosion problems... not just Chrysler products either. The problem is the labor rate... so seemingly a spare set of wheels is the only way out.
  4. It's been way too many years. Back before the dawn of time, I recall reaching behind & replacing bulbs in a bayonette socket... I can't imagine pulling a cluster just to change a stupid bulb. The scrapes from changing her headlight bulbs haven't healed yet.My hands must be getting soft... I used to lay over engines, crawl into all sorts of cramped quarters... I never used to get scaped up this much. (Come to think of it, I was a bunch thinner to crawl into those spaces. LOL!)Russ
  5. Just take a peek under her rear... if the exhaust looks like a rocket launcher, it's a CTD! LOL!
  6. Left side of dash lights out in wife's Subaru Outback. Is there a fuse on this? Any clues?
  7. Been window shopping on E-Bay Motors... 125-150 a wheel! I suppose shipping would be extra. New, used, reconditioned all about the same. Maybe I can just find a 600 car & call it even! I guess I sold the last set of mags (from daughter's junked Pontiac Sunbird) too cheap!
  8. I forgot to mention... wheels are OEM Alum Alloy Mags. You mentioned paint... there used to be a clear spray... acrillic or something. The problem is I don't have the means to pull the rubber to even get at the bead surface.
  9. I had the Cirus back in the tire store... leaky rims. The car spent quite a bit of time in the back... no charge but they said the wheels are corroding & if this continues, will need to be REPLACED. Wheels would total the value of the car... but I've already spent more this year than car is worth. (Complete distubitor.) Car only has 95k. I'm just can't believe the wheels can't be cleaned but clearly not at their expense (which I didn't expect... but they want to sell new tires). My mechanic friend suggests adding more stop-leak glop to the tires... I was running some but not much (one bottle / 4 tires). Ideas? In a way, this shop is tellling me that THEY don't want to do the cleaning even as part of a tire purchase. I can't do the cleaning because it would mean putting the car on stands, having the tires broken down, cleaning the wheels myself... I'm thinking about wire brush or bright pads on a drill or a dremel tool or maybe even bead blasting. Then new rubber installed. Alternatives? Buy replacement rims (aftermarket or used OEM), clean them or get them done, and exchange the wheels. Hmmm.
  10. The saga: 3:29.10 8:30PM This was the third storm in 2 weeks, the ground is already saturated... As I said before we're on a side hill 3/4 up... down in the valley, the road in is about to go under water. (there is one house down there... I know he has 2 sump pumps but don't see how that could keep up. The neighbor just stopped by... with more hydraulic cement. I was shop vaccing the water up on the semi-finished lower level... trying to stay ahead of it. Some stuff is in the water. It can't get higher than 2" because we can just open the outside doors! Well, I guess it could if we did not know to open them. Sheila had brought one bucket of hydraulic cement home but we've not had luck yet. The neighbor borrowed a hose, he's pumping the floor into his sump with it's installed pump... We're not under water, but this is bad enough... 2:30 AM Our attempts to seal with hydraulic cement have failed... and now the water will not go into a shallow cut down containeer like before. We have no choice but constantly shop vac up the stream of water & barely keeping up. It's 2:30AM We're out of ideas & energy. I do not see any choice but to take shifts all night & beyond. I should not have bragged about our french drains... they must be blocked or over whelmed. If we stop the basement will flood & much damage. No one to call at this hour... Morning awaits. 5:55 AM Sheila managed to get a couple of very brief naps... I'm too stressed to sleep even though I've laid down a couple of times. I've been awake 23 hours at this point. I'm going to use the "phone a friend" option as soon as it's light out. 3.30.10 11:30 AM After exhausting our supplies & ourselves, we kept up with the incoming water through the night. Sheila called out of work. At first light, Sheila went out into the deluge & dug out the French drain outlet. The water poured out of it. There is still a sizeable lake uphill from the house/foundation. We did not see any change in the water coming in... I phoned several friends... I got some ideas. One offer of help from a friend who has similar problems of his own... his advise was useful. Sheila went to the Home Depot in Griswald, Ct... & got advise & more supplies. She brought home expanding spray foam sealant... I did not think it would work & the guy even said "It sounds dumb" but it slowed the inflow comsiderably. The "Quick Plug" (same brand as last night) worked like a charm. As far as we can tell the leak is stopped... cleaning up now. The stream water is now a raging river & coming over the road. Many school districts closed. The major rivers have exceeded the records set just a week ago. Homes & businesses that got pumped out are flooded again... heck, the rivers had barely gotten within their banks when this hit. I'm sore & exhausted... & we're counting our lucky stars. I offered Sheila supper out tonight. We're both pretty tired & with the weather, driving is not the greatest idea. Without thinking I suggested a "rain check" from her response, perhaps that should be in the jokes & humor. We're going to rest & if we're lucky, sleep. 2:15PM I thought Sheila was just cleaning up... I had something to eat. I felt cold with a scratchy throat. My body decided on sleep, whether I agreed or not. After about an hour, I woke up. Sheila found some seepage in our patch & tried again to seal it. Fingers crossed. ARK = Good Idea!! Plans for Ark 4:00 PM This has been a workout but we were SUCCESSFUL. Sheila took this picture of our street... the culverts could not handle the water from the brook... has filled the swamps & then topped the road. By mid afternoon Wednesday, it's not over the road anymore, whew. Sheila was a real trooper... we held the flood to a small area by contineously wet vac-ing over about 20 hours ... it got within a foot of the rugs & furnature... Sheila worked at using hydraulic cement to plug the leak while I kept the flood contained. The heros of the day: spray foam & water stop cement. The floors drying up, leak stopped. 3.31.10 8:00 AM Sheila got up & went to work today after 2 days "off"... work that is. She's probably thankful to go to work so she can physically rest. We are both wiped. Her day to open the lab... so she must go in early. With I95, airport connector, Warwick Mall and many other roads, homes & businesses flooded under deep water. Local roads as well are buckled, many bridges are out or closed as raging water continues to threaten them. Getting to anywhere is crazy. Reports of 4-6 hours to get somewhere. Schools are still closed. Many used as shelters but I do not see how they can run bus routes? I called & cancelled my MRI (scheduled for today) & follow up with Neuro after. The rivers are receeding but will be next week before the rivers are back within their banks. There's gonna be one heck of a sale at Warwick Mall. The Firemen in rubber boats rescued a Security Guard from the second floor! I'm staying home... unless I really need to go out for something... I figure if I hold off a few days, the water will be receeding & detours accomplished. Sheila showed me her right hand last night. Applying the concrete patch to stop the ice cold flowing water, her cold & numb hands... she wore the skin away on her index finger until it bled. There are numerous cuts & scrapes... now that they are warm... they HURT. And we are some of the lucky ones. She deserves some serious pampering. Rte 165 between Rte 3 & Ct. Our connection to the rest of RI. Nat Guard dirrecting traffic. Down to one lane of alternating traffic. They just put new poles in & had begun upgrading the electric service... DO OVER!! All told I had about 1 hour sleep on 39 hours... Sheila had a couple of half hour cap naps... once she got the leak stopped she crashed for 3 hours in the evening so maybe 4 hours in the same 39 hour interval. We are still beat. At least we were successful! Russ
  11. 9" of rain... would have been what? 9 FEET of snow?
  12. Oh, yes, that's our town... we drive that road often... lots of roads like that. Our road was under water by about a foot. Rte 165 lost the Southern lane for about a mile (East bound). Sheila said the Nat Guard were there?? I was up for 30 hours straight. Sheila was up about 35 hours with just a couple of 20 minute cat naps... but we were successful in saving the lower level from flooding. And we are absolutely counting our lucky stars that we finally got the hole around the water pipe sealed... Wife is a trooper... She did the putty work while I did containment... Our in-laws (out-laws) are close to a pond... last I heard the in-law attartment down stairs had 6" of water in it & the expensive pump up septic system had flooded & failed. Another realitive had to surrender & leave for higher ground when their house was surrounded & 2 pumps failed to control the rising water in the basement. There's a lot of erosion along the street & our gravel driveway is finished but passable. I 95 is closed in places... like Warwick. Yuck, city sewer plant is now submerged & water is backed up onto Interstate. Incredible damage. Some clips of my local area, http://www2.turnto10.com/jar/news/local/....ck_river/34180/ http://www2.turnto10.com/jar/news/local/...._warwick/34178/ http://www2.turnto10.com/jar/news/local/....t_floods/34173/ http://www2.turnto10.com/jar/news/local/...._warwick/34171/ http://www2.turnto10.com/jar/news/local/....coventry/34162/ Russ PS That's Exeter #1 Vol Fire Company on the right of the pict. Forutnately there is an aux station on Rte 2 on the other side of this obstruction.
  13. Thanks for the tip guys. I've not had any issues with leakage or I would not have ever done it. Fuel coming from underground tanks will be cool... so except in cold weather, we should expect some expansion. It's 10 miles home from the nearest station a highway truck stop that's a PITA since they don't accept pay at the pump & it's a hike to the fuel desk. Twice that from those I prefer to use. So I'm down a gallon before I get home. Still, it doesn't seem to make sense to coax in the last gallon or 2. And you're right that any seepage at the seals could dump it on the ground. Russ
  14. Is there any harm in fueling "up the spout"... above the other opening inside the filler neck? Occasionally, I have done this when I got a good price & did not want to give the highway bandits any more than I had to. If this is not a good idea, I'll not do this again. A comment on another thread got me thinking...Russ
  15. I'm not active on CF... I'm glad to hear you understand the physics. I learned many years ago with my off road (non-DOT approved lighting) that the "high powered" H3 of the day was only half the issue. The optic quality made a world of difference. It's easier to measure power than optic quality. It's like bombing the truck... it does no good if you can not control the power. I'm so glad that you "get it". Best Wishes,Russ
  16. OK. I have not played with lights for a long time. I did some research of this a while back however. Halogen lights have a completely different filament orientation from the HID. Therefore they require a different lens reflector design. More light is fine, but it must be aimed correctly or you will be a hazzard to every other driver. You sure don't want to blind the other guy with his CTD coming the other way. In my opinion, lamps, lens, reflectors should be sold in matched sets. I'll try to find the earlier threads on this. http://forum.mopar1973man.com/showthread.php/26-Fog-Driving-lights?highlight=headlights http://forum.mopar1973man.com/showthread.php/378-Headlight-Question?highlight=headlights http://forum.mopar1973man.com/showthread.php/459-Thinking-about-lighting?highlight=headlights Russ
  17. I think Mike said before that the taller / narrower tread was better in snow. It makes perfect sense to me. Unless you are in 4WD, you are pushing those front tire "plows" through the resisting snow. From my high performance car days... wide ovals s*cked in the snow.
  18. Around here Cooper is handled by a local discount chain... few tire store dealers... I had Cooper ATs on a Ford Ranger years ago. The tranny went out & I junked the truck but got the almost new tires off. Auto shop didn't want to put them on wife's Voyager but they were the right size. Wore like iron. I'm still running OEM Michelin "AT" "all season" but are really more of a highway tire. Admittedly I don't really go off the pavement far but there are times the pavement is snow covered. OEM is a crappy snow tire. I've got 50K on the truck / tires. I've still got legal tread... I'm thinking next Fall replacement. I have no idea what I want to put on though.
  19. It's been raining cat & dogs... now more like ponies & horses. Our already saturated yard has big puddles everywhere... new water just not soaking in. The streams & rivers that had just gotten back in their banks... are now out again. ~3" of rain in 24 hours with another 1-2" expected. The forecasts are for a peak tommow night. We're all going to grow web feet before this is over.
  20. My hat's off to anyone with the patience to fish with a rod & reel. OMG, how old was I in this picture? Flounder was a victim of a spear gun... Sorry about the old picture but it's the only one I could find with me & a fish. Shoot, & skinny too! Dad was not a fisherman... it just wasn't compatable with boats with sails & ropes... I went with a friend fishing Block Island... I ended up running the boat & never touched a pole while the boat's skipper prevented the loss & damage to his tackle by his other guests... I can about guarentee Nick would not have stood still for a fly pole swishing around his ears. We were down that swift Spring stream & did not bother the fisherman at all. Some of the re-enactors claim to do well with handlines from a canoe in proper colonial fashon.
  21. Mike, are you talking about that watering hole out there? Cause otherwise, I don't see any water at all.
  22. This looks different than the axle on my 01.5 that came with disc brake rear axle. Hoping not to appear dense, I wonder why your axle was selected instead of the newer one?
  23. More SNOW... YUCK!! I feel bad for you. Not that we couldn't get another blast... it's happened before... but at this point, we'd just clean the cars / trucks & drive over the rest of it. Wife spent a bunch of time getting her garden ready.
  24. Man that S*cks. I'm hoping this thaw holds here. Our yard was soggy & we blocked of the worst of the driveway with traffic cones (just happened to have some. Were originally gathered for horse training/competition.) There are some deep ruts in the driveway but they can be pushed back in when it dries out. When we built our house, we paid close attention to the waterproofing & installed French drains while the excavation was open. Being 3/4 of the way up a steep hill, the drains just run out down hill. I wasn't worried much about flooding... Our dear daughter, Sonya & grandbaby Aleah are on the second floor of tripple decker outside Boston. (Sonya's DH Freddie is in DC). We figured the third floor is high & dry... no worries. Well, the runoff from the street flooded the basement. The power was out on the first floor (don't ya think the GUYS living there would have called the landlord when their lights went out?), furnace is flooded. Sonya had large rubbermaid bins in the basement stacked 3 high... they floated & tipped over. Sonya took the baby to day-care & called out of work so she could be at the appt. The tenants rescued the waterlogged property from the basement & sorted whose it was. Sheila picked Aleah up from day-care after working all day, took her to the apartment & stayed... went to another wake on the way home... arrived here 10:30 with her car loaded with wet baby clothes. (The noise ringing in my ears is the constant washing machine slosh.)The ground must be saturated as Sonya reports her basement still has water coming in... There's no sign of water entering the yard though there's a river running into the catch basin in the street. We're thinking the drain has failed. We'll get through this. Sheila is having good success with the clothing washing, running multiple rinses to get the dirty water out before washing & drying. We've got a couple of days of work ahead of us.Sonya posted on Facebook that they are not running a yardsale! LOL! When Sheila arrived, all sorts of things were spread around the yard draining water & hopefully drying. I guess a sense of humor is essencial under trying circumstances.I know there are people's whose homes & business's have flooded or washed away. I realize that we've just had a taste of it... my heart goes out to those who've been devistated.<<< sigh >>>Russ
  25. Any snow that comes down now... and it still can I know... won't last. With all the flooding around here, deep water crossing may be more of an issue! LOL! We broke a record high yesterday. Maybe 72 today. I'm running light, so the winter cold front can stay in a few more days, but I'm watching the temp like a hawk.
