concensus of running EGT's
So what EGT is dangerous for these engines?? I remember the early days of the cummins 262 we wanted to stay under 1100 degrees but would push to 1200 to top a hill. Those were the temps where you needed to cool out to 650 before shutting down.

Redhead or Bluetop?
- Travel trailer newbie!
In 80,000 miles of towing, i always run the pressure indicated on the side of the tire. Lower pressures will allow flexing on sharp and jack knife backing that will cause tread seperation and blow outs. With proper suspension and alignment the tires wear perfectly at max psi- vp44 how long do they last??
Thanks for all the replys. I thought eric at vulcan would be the place to buy my parts. Just wanted the right source for a pump if i get stranded in podunk texas. At 110,000 i lost the transfer pump and did the mod with big lines, fittings, pump and guage. I run Archoil fuel and oil addative.- Bosch VP44 Injection Pump Replacement
- vp44 how long do they last??
I have 188,000 on my 2002 VP44. I hear they have a reliability problem that is starting to worry me. My gcw is 18000lb with my 5r. Should i just change it or at least line up a vendor that sells a reliable rebuilt. Any suggestions where to buy one?? Also do the orfices wear out on the injector nozzles that could produce a poor spray pattern? My mileage is going down. Truck is stock with no trick controller ( California). If i do change injectors what would be recommended?- 2009 4dr 2wd, whats it worth
very clean and straight for 250k pure stock. trans rebuilt at 175k. Miles are all from garage at home to garage at farm.- 2009 4dr 2wd, whats it worth
Driving me nuts trying to find approximate value of this truck. I have a very slow internet provider. SOOO, I am asking you guys to make a guess. It was used as commuter truck by a farmer. 2009 4 door loaded with 250000 miles, auto. He has it serviced every 3000 at a dealer. It is a desert truck with 0 rust. He uses other field trucks on the farm and it is parked in the shade. and garaged at home. Clean but needs a front seat rebuild. Give your best guess. Thanks.- Blowing Headlight Bullbs
While working in an auto elect shop, we got a car no one could fix. It was doing the same thing. The problem was a wire was breaking open then closing , Inside the outer insulation. It was causing an arc. An arc can generate 2 times the voltage times 2. That is 48 volts in a 12 volt system.- Brake squeakssss
My Honda had a light squeak when braking that morphed into a groaning just as I stopped. I had recently replaced the pads and hardware with Napa gold shoes. Pulled everything down and applied brake quiet to back of the pads. I quieted down for about 2,000 miles and came back. Napa gold is top of the line. My friend that owns the Napa store said he doubts it would be the pads but gave me a new set to try. I ran the offending pads 20,000 miles until my wife's gripping forced me to change them. Yep, it was the pads. Never assume the new part has to be perfect even when buying the best. PS. The old pads were almost as thick as the new ones with 25K on them.- Volt meter dropped to 0
What mike described is what it did. Dropped to left, 8v ? Never seen a voltmeter that didn't just read system voltage. Dodge has a neat system that lets you know a problem is coming. After putting on the new pump, I see the tensioner had the belt running way forward on the water pump. new tensioner moved the belt to a position that would put less stress on the pump bearing. Thanks for the input.- Volt meter dropped to 0
Blew a water pump. I think the antifreeze caused the alternator belt to slip. Check gauges light came on. Voltmeter went to 0. I was surprised as most voltmeters are reading entire system voltage and batteries are still up. Does the dodge voltmeter just read alternator out put? On a related subject. I only get 50,000 miles on NAPA new water pumps. This truck and my older 1st gen also. Is that typical pump life for these pumps?- A/C leak/diagnostics
Shame on you. A 134a smuggler. LOL- AIR COND Leak
Well, I thought I had it fixed. 6 weeks till to low. Mike said the sealing caps would not prevent leakage if the QD leaks. just ordered low press suction line, that contains the charge QD, and compressor. Hate just changing parts but everything else checks out ok. Note; the evaporator showed no sign of a leak. It was nearly 1/2 choked off by leaves and debris. The heater core was leaking so trip into the heat/air box was not wasted.- Steering problem 2wd
Had the alignment shop go to 5 degree pos. They said I had the steering box set to tight. What is the procedure for adjusting the box?- Steering problem 2wd
My 2001 2500 2wd is starting to wander. I continually have to steer right then left to hold it straight down the road. Had it into my alignment shop. All specs are ok. I thought about adding caster, but at spec 3 1/2 degree positive already they said that was enough. I am used to 1.5 to 2 degree with the dana 4wd axle. As I said this is 2wd and all front end components except steering box have under 25 k miles on them. Steering sector box? Truck has 175 k on it and I live 1 mile down a washboard road.- AIR COND Leak
I used the napa set. I was using one that was too small. It looked right for that size line. I also started trimming the angle. Then I tried the next larger remover. It was sloppy loose on the line but released the connector.- AIR COND Leak
You may add a note on automatics to remove the shift indicator cable before dropping the steering column.- AC question
I found a cheap leak detector on e-bay. Some buyers said they used it every day in their business. Less than 1/2 hour time at a garage. Also uv light but it didn't find anything.- More AC questions
Mike has answered all my past questions but here are some more. You guys probably don't believe that I was a diesel fleet mechanic and shop superintendent for 30 years. I think I have forgotten more than I ever learned and this new stuff has just passed me up since my retirement. Question: I have a vacuum pump that sucks 20 inch of vac. Is that enough to vacuum an AC system after disassembly? At NAPA buying my evaporator and thought I would just buy some compressor oil while I was there. There are 4 different kinds in the same brand. Which type do I use? I really should bring this truck up to mike and have him show me some spots to hunt chuckars with my bird dog before I am to old to do that also.- Looking to buy 2002 2500 opinions needed (pics inside)
So Cal Desert. My 2001 and my 92 first gen. Nothing underneath but shiney black paint and oil. 1947 in my avatar doesn't have any rust either.- AIR COND Leak
Just found your vidio on u tube. NAPA usually has good quality parts. Going there for a new core. On that leak at the low side fill port, I bought a new cap at Napa and the leak detector could find no leak around the new sealing cap. Thanks for all your help. You and this forum are gold.- AIR COND Leak
Is The NAPA item removal tools for the QDs? Never removed these QDs. I need to change my Evaporator. Where do I start? I finally drilled a hole in my heater box near the evaporator. My leak detector sounded off as I got near the hole. Found that it also would sound off if put in the outlet ports of the heater box if I waited a while after shutting down everything. Tried that with it running but I guess the incoming fan air diluted the sample. Any advice on removing the evap would be helpful.- Fuel pressure guage
I used a oil filled pressure gauge from McMaster Carr. Not needing to watch it all the time, I mounted it on the floor to the right of the fuel pedal. Ran 1/4 inch air brake tubing to pump. Oil fill gauge needs no snubber.- AIR COND Leak
The thread inside the QD is 5/16-24. I am going to make a o-ring sealed steel cap. Will let you know if successful. Replacing the whole line for a QD leak is nuts. - Travel trailer newbie!
