NV4500 Swap, need help!

Recommended Posts

Hello all, this is my first post here on the forum. I've scoured this forum as well as a few others for existing diagnosis and can't seem to find a sure answer for my problem. I just purchased a 2000 Dodge 2500 24V that has had a NV4500 swapped in. Everything, but the cruise control, functions as it should, however, the check engine light is on due to the PCM still searching for the Auto tranny. Being that it won't pass CA emissions testing with the engine light I could greatly use help determining the simplest solution to my problem. I do have a Smarty programmer for the truck and the PO tried their "manual recovery" software to no avail...apparently he was told this only works half of the time? So here are my questions,

Would a PCM swap from a manual truck do the trick?

If so, what years of these trucks have compatible PCMs?

I've read of people reprogramming them to a manual truck VIN, but don't the ECM and PCM need to have the same VIN programmed to communicate properly?

Thank you in advance to anyone who can shed some light on my issue! If you feel this has already been addressed elsewhere, please, point me in the right direction.

I don't have your answer, but have you contacted Smarty directly?

I have not yet, but like Michael's comment below mentions, they won't be able to address the PCM

Let's just say there are 52 versions of software for the PCM and ECM per year. Best off getting matching PCM and ECM for that year of truck for a manual.

Smarty can flash only the ECM it cannot flash the PCM.

So if I had a way to reprogram/reflash the ECM and PCM there would be no need to replace either, am I right? If so, do you know where or how I can find the calibration codes for the ECM and PCM

Check with auto computer specialist in Florida, they may guide you in right direction, they also program and fix ecm,pcm and some other stuff.

Thank you, they have more competitive pricing than other similar outfits I've looked. I gave them a call and have not heard back as of yet.

I did this a few years ago. I got a donor truck and used both ecm and pcm from it with no cel.

I don't understand why the PO didn't do this as he did the swap from a donor truck! Then again, he probably wouldn't have sold the thing if he didn't have to deal with the CEL

I've spoken with a local in-frame tuning shop that a friend of mine works for and they seemed confident they could reflash the PCM if I located a calibration number. Does this refer to whatever software version was used to program the PCM from the factory? At this point I think this would be my best option as it would involve almost no down time for the truck and the PCM wouldn't have to come out. Does anyone know where to locate these "calibration codes"? Thank you all again for your responses!
