Ode to the leak

Is 18 years to long to ask a hose to last?

We think you need to be honest here - we are pretty sure that you used that hose as a handle to lift the head from the block during your head gasket replacement.  I know, it only lifted the head out once....

There is really much pressure on the heater hose . Are you sure it blew or rotted.

Mine stay on with no clamps and can pull them off easily by hand truck blow them off or leak with clamps not on. Yes they're on now but I've accidentally ran without them

I dare say after 18 years it just got tired or rotted. The upper one that connects to the head split across the hose just below the 90.

Not sure how long mine was leaking but I blew 3 gallons of coolant out. How long did you run with no hoses on? Seems to me that the heater hoses ought to have the same pressure on them as the rest of the coolant system.
