Low Boost/ Power

Recommended Posts

Need some help, I just put a boost gauge in the truck and I noticed it’s only making 5-10psi. The RPMs are near 2k to hit 10 psi. The turbo sounds like it’s spooling like it should, I checked for boost leaks but I couldn’t find anything out of the ordinary. I know these trucks aren’t meant to be fast but it shouldn’t be as slow as it is now.

If you did jot see p done twice you only read 1 computer. An 02 will read both and some 01's. We have a list of all trouble codes in the Articles section under 24v 2nd gen, then engine, and the trouble codes are there. There maybe more. Was the truck running fine prior to installing the boost gauge.

It would also be a good idea to get a scanner on there and clear the codes then drive and see what if any come back. Some ofmthem could be old. From quick look at what you posted it may a wirring or computer issue which would put it above my paygrade. But if the codes are old you could be chasing your tail.

Pull the intake off of the turbo and check for shaft play. In and out is ok to point. Up and down is not good. If the MAP sensor is failing it could be sending bad info on pressure cutting fuel. Boost leaks can do the same thing. The only way to test for that is pressurize the system. A boost leak that big should be easily identified. If nothing is obvious spray soapy water on all of the joints. With the codes you have posted it could be electronic. You have one those issues that could be simple but you have to find it.

Also spin the compressor blades with your finger, engine off for sure, it should spin freely.

Just for boost leaks answer...

Just taking my truck I can build 47 to 49 PSI of boost. Now take the wastegate hose disconnect the wastegate and leave the hose OPEN not plugged. Now take one bolt out of the intake manifold. With these two open hose it is loud enough to be clearly heard in the cab. Now my loss... Only dropped like 7 PSI. I was still hitting 41 PSI of boost and smoke wasn't any different. EGT's about maybe 100*F higher.

10 PSI boost is telling me the engine is in defuel mode. MAP sensor code, etc. Hence why we need the error codes.

My check engine light isn’t on but I flipped the key a bunch of times and these are what showed up, p1693 ,p0523 ,p0122, p1694, p1687

What year of truck? You might be still better off getting the error codes read with a tool. There is communication issues with the ECM.

Does your gauges work?

APPS sensor if it goes out of range at all then it would instantly "Dead Pedal" then ignore the wild signal then set the P0121, P0122 or P0123 code(s). All you got to do is watch the TPS value on a Quadzilla or Live Data tool and see if you can reach full 100%. I do see the P0122 code but that is low volt value.

We do have Timbos APPS here...
