2nd Generation Dodge 24 Valve Powertrain

This is a discussion forum of the 1998.5 to 2002 2nd Generation Dodge Ram Trucks with 5.9L Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel power train and drive line system. This includes all sub-system including wiring, fuel, oil, exhaust, air, transmission, computers and sensors.

  1. Well everyone, was hoping that this was not the case but... Two mornings in a row I got in the truck and started driving. Truck drove fine to about 30 mph then stopped accellerating. Did not matter what I did with the throttle and I had zero boost. I turned around and started to head home then it picked back up and drove fine. Next morning no issues. Following morning it did like above but after driving a bit longer the boost came on fine and truck drove ok... Still this is not a good thing and finally this morning pulled the intake hose off of the turbo inlet. No real noticeable movement in the turbine up nor down but when I tried to turn it it sure seemed stiffe…

I hooked up the geno's vulcan fuel pressure gauge this afternoon, and am getting 14.5 - 15 psi at idle, with a drop during normal acceleration to around 12-13 psi, and steady state psi at 45 mph (haven't been out on the highway yet) of around 14 psi. Are these numbers good/about what others are seeing with stock setup? Thanks.I'm still waiting on my fuel line for my isspro gauge, and was bored today, so installed the tapped banjo into the outlet port on the filter, connected the vulcan test gauge, zip tied open the needle valve so it wouldn't turn, leaving my test port on the filter for my permanent gauge. Still haven't ordered the big line kit for filter to VP.

I learned a valuable lesson this pat week and thought I'd share it in case there are others who don't know this. While I was hunting last week I noticed that my truck was slow to start. It sounded like dead battery. It got worse to the point where I had to have it jumped. It then got so bad that even jumping it with another diesel (two known good batteries) wouldn't turn it over any faster. After calling Mike from Arizona where I live, and also talking to a couple other guys, I was directed toward the starter and the starter cable. I removed the starter and went to an O'Rielly's to have it tested. On their machine it tested good. So, I went back to camp (50+ miles…

The MIL was on the other day, after I ran out of fuel. Apparently my draw straw starts to suck at ~1/8 tank indicated... anyway, I thought it might be related to that, but I just hooked the scanner up and got:P0122 - Throttle Position Sensor Circuit Low VoltageP1689 - Delivered Torque Circuit FailSo, experts, what's the scoop?

New owner & still getting accustomed to my truck ('99 3500). I was reading another thread here in the 24v powertrain forum & the poster mentioned the check gauges notification coming on in his cluster, as if that was an indication of a problem. I noticed this notification on my truck; it will temporarily illuminate immediately after start-up (all gauges indicate normal), and will go out after about 5 seconds or so. I figured this was normal operation but after reading about all the troubles the other fellow was having I now wonder if it is. Is there anything I should be following up with? Appreciate your patience & help, Joe in St Louis

Just got back from the maiden voyage with the RV275s. Took me 3.5 hours to change them. I did take the lines right off like pepsiocean's video. The garbage bag idea was awesome too. My #6 injector line was very loose and leaking so I hope I fixed my poor start if pointed uphill problem. Anyway, I could tell the difference the moment I hit the key. It sounded beefier, but smoother if that makes sense...lol. On the test drive I can hit 30 psi of boost now. Before it would hit 25psi the odd time. That is with the Comp on level 1x5. I don't have the pump tapped yet due to the stupid 5 point torx bolts. I need to borrow a driver bit to install the stealth cover. My stoc…

  8. The truck I'm working on has the Cumins 5.9 24 valve engine. My question is about the Diagnostic Trouble Codes. I'm scanning with the AutoEnginuity, PC based scan tool, with the enhanced Chrylser / Dodge software. I've attached the DTC Report. THIS ENGING HAS HAD THE VP44 PUMP REPLACED WITH A P7100 PUMP. I know some codes are a result of that swap. Each of the DTC "P" codes includes a description, Status, Good Trip counts, and Starts Since Failed. Each corresponds to a code that can be found in the FSM (factory service manual) as well as many other documents. The "Freeze Frame" information is confusing. For example, on the report I 've attached, the 3 Freez…

Are todays thermocouples trust worthy enough to put them ahead of the turbo? I know you will get a much more accurate ex temp reading there.... but I'd sure hate to run a rotted off tip through the turbo! I have a couple of tractors that I'd like to equip them with..

  10. So I pulled the trigger on the transgo SK TFOD-Diesel kit today. I'm not happy with how the tranny acts while I tow my fiver so I'm gonna try this kit. I also ordered a new Dorman pan 265-827 off Amazon because mine might be warped, and this one comes with a drain plug. My questions. What else should I order while I'm in there that should be done. I've read something about billet intermediate servo, accumulator, band strut, band anchor, 3-4 spring, and upgrade the governor solenoid ? But that's jibbrish to me at this point in my research. I'm not looking to drop the trans out. Just whatever I can do to the VB. Also so any tips or write ups of he…

Now I got one for all you to look at now... Go over to my MSDS page and check out all the fuel additives... Look at the MSDS listings. Remember if its toxic and can't be eaten or drank it should be listed. These listing are for emergency personal to know how to handle say a fire, poisoing, etc.Now that you looked at MSDS sheets now go over and look at the chemical listings. I've got most of the CAS# numbers and alternate names now for most chemicals. :?: QUESTIONS :?: _____________________________________________________________________________________Now tell me how many products do you see here that are lubricants??? :?: Now tell me how many are cetane boosters??? …

I called the amazing dealership to have then flash my 1998.5 24v to get the high idle and 3 cylinder turned on and they had no idea or clue what i was talking about and basically told me they cant help me. But they could take a look for 75 bucks and see what they can figure out. I will be going to Boise the day after thanksgiving so any takers on using a smarty on on my truck please.

Hi Guys, Just came across another Bosch authorized VP44 pump rebuilder - here is the link. http://www3.jasperengines.com/blog/2011/12/02/jasper-remanufactures-vp44-diesel-injection-pumps/ The link shows the actual "diaphragm" that is installed in these pump that fails regularly - so Jasper claim. Anyway, I just thought that this link might be of some interest. Thanks

Was wondering what fittings are being used with AD or FASS fuel systems to keep the stock filter housing in line.I live in the northeast and would like the security of having the fuel heater, also an extra filter cant be all that bad. I have a AD II 165 1/2 fuel line with quick connections and modified fuel canister(which im having problems with since ive installed but thats another story for another time).

  18. Picked up a cater pump for backup pump just in case of airdog failure. Not sure what is best for pump, if I should mount it now or wait till I need it, if I ever do. Choices are: Carry carter pump under rear seat in plastic bag. ...Ready to go if and when I need it. Who knows when I might need it, but pump gets no exercise but is not exposed to weather, etc. OR mount it now next to airdog pump? ...Exposed to weather, and I'll probably will hook it up maybe twice a year to make sure still works. What would yo do? Thanks for your input.

Got started on my Big Stick III install a couple weeks ago. This cam is comparable to Hamilton "tow" cam 178/208. Mine came out of my 96 which I Colt reground. Pulled it at 494,400 miles, but they said it was good to go and gives me the mechanical lobe if I decide to convert to mechanical lift pump. During the project I did a couple things on the side- installed a block stiffener from Cummins, modded the water pump, and threw in a different set of injectors. The block stiffener is one they use on their Tata engines in India (Tata Cummins are a bit of an amalgamation of Cummins parts, built out of 2nd Gen 24V blocks with early CR pistons and VE injection pum…

  20. Hi guys I'm back from a nice summer vacation and also with a new to me truck. Living in the mountains I decided a four wheel drive should make life a bit easier than having to chain up my dually everytime I wanted to drive it somewhere. Anyways the new truck is in my signature line. I have lots of TLC and maintenance to do but wanted to start with the fuel psi first. The truck already has a Fass 150 installed. The edge monitor is showing psi of 12 and WOT it drops to 6-7 psi. I know there is a spring on the return side that can be stretched but I would honestly rather install one that was made for the purpose I'm after. My other pot stirring debate is that the VP 44 was r…
